Coming Home | Rosamunde Pilcher

Against the backdrop of an elegant Cornwall mansion before World War II and a vast continent-spanning canvas during the turbulent war years, this involving story tells of an extraordinary young woman's coming of age, coming to grips with love and sadness, and in every sense of the term, coming home... In 1935, Judith Dunbar is left behind at a British boarding school when her mother and baby sister go off to join her father in Singapore. At Saint Ursula's, her friendship with Loveday Carey-Lewis sweeps her into the privileged, madcap world of the British aristocracy, teaching her about values, friendship, and wealth. But it will be the drama of war, as it wrenches Judith from those she cares about most, that will teach her about courage...and about love. Teeming with marvelous, memorable characters in a novel that is a true masterpiece, Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher is a book to be savored, reread, and cherished forever.

This was a lovely, long read, one filled with unforgettable characters and setting that I got lost in. Judith‘s family heads to Singapore for work while she stays in England with her aunt. She becomes close with the Carey-Lewis family and their glamorous lifestyle. They were flawed, kind, selfish, naïve, and all of the things real people are. It felt like a glimpse into that world as it truly ones during that tumultuous period.

#two4tuesday

1. Yes! Storm Front by Jim Butcher (though I remembered basically NOTHING), Coming Home by Rosamund Pilcher (one of my all-time faves, I had to buy a new copy this year because it fell apart), all of Harry Potter (some books multiple times across various formats), The Golden Compass, Steal Away Home and Soon Be Free, Washington Black (ugh), and some BSC, Alice McKinley and Rosie Rushton books.

2. Long Bright River!

Everyone has “a” book, the book they return to, the book that brings them what they need at certain moments. For me, this book brings me joy, gentleness, and since my mother‘s passing 15 years ago a connection with her (no idea why but I always feel more connected to her after I read it). I adore Rosamunde Pilchner‘s books, but this one has a special place in my heart.

Amiable What a lovely sentiment and reason for reading. ❤️ 4y
ljuliel This is my favorite book of this author‘s. It does give you a really restful read . That‘s a nice sentiment about your mother. 💕 4y

Last week a young child came running into the library, unceremoniously ditched her shoes, and continued into the children‘s area to play with the learning toys.
I could not love this more. The library is a home for the community, a place of welcome for all ages.

Sweeping, historical and emotionally charged novels will always be a favorite. And that is what this book truly was. It told a growing-up story amid an incredible backdrop of the war. It made you feel for the characters and believe their stories. Also, the ending absolutely made me smile. A very enjoyable book. #recentlyread #nospoilers ❤️

P.S. Finished January 13th. I couldn't resist a photo with the remnants of Christmas and snow. ❄️🎄😍

#undertheradar #hour30 #24in48 challenge: The Other Language (Marciano) is a transporting collection of stories. The Sandy Bottom Orchestra (Keillor/Nilsson) took me years--I never wanted it to end, so I'd stop, reread and add 1 ch. The Singer (Miller) affected me spiritually. I sat in my driveway 20 min after finishing A Little Life (Yanigihara). Coming Home (Pilcher) is my ultimate comfort book. I brought it to college so to avoid homesickness.

bookandcat Also a bonus: my BSC collection is in the background. I've returned to them over and over again to "say hello to my friends". 6y

I absolutely adored this book when I read it twenty years ago. I picked up a used copy and decided to read it again to see how it holds up. 100 pages in and so far, so good!

I haven't read this book in years, but it kept cropping up in my mind. I read it again this weekend and fell in love with it all over again. A very nostalgic read for me. Reading September by Rosamunde Pilger next.

"Other people's houses were always fascinating. As soon as you went through the door for the first time, you got the feel of the atmosphere, and so discovered something about the personalities of the people who lived there."

JSW I love everything by Rosamunde Pilcher, but this is one of my absolute favorites. I also love Winter Solstice. ❤️ 8y
