POIGNANT . . . FUNNY . . . "THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST" IS ONE OF HER BEST. . . . [TYLER] HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER. "The New York Times" Macon Leary is a travel writer who hates both travel and anything out of the ordinary. He is grounded by loneliness and an unwillingness to compromise his creature comforts when he meets Muriel, a deliciously peculiar dog-obedience trainer who up-ends Macon s insular world and thrusts him headlong into a remarkable engagement with life. BITTERSWEET . . . EVOCATIVE . . . It s easy to forget this is the warm lull of fiction; you half-expect to run into her characters at the dry cleaners . . . Tyler [is] a writer of great compassion. "The" "Boston Globe" Tyler has given us an endlessly diverting book whose strength gathers gradually to become a genuinely thrilling one. "Los Angeles Times" A DELIGHT . . . A GRACEFUL COMIC NOVEL ABOUT GETTING THROUGH LIFE. "The Wall Street Journal""

First off, the audible production (that I paid for) sucked! Midway through I found the audiobook with the suitcase available on audible plus, and it was better but definitely not exceptional. 😑 Still, nowhere near my favorite book by her. Low pick. One more #roll100 down!

Classic Tyler about a man who lost his son in a tragic incident and his rocky moves to reclaim his life.

Cinfhen Was this made into a movie with Brad Pitt??? I feel Ike the title is familiar?? 8mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes, I knew it was made into a movie, but I had to look up who starred. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0094606/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_2_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%2520accide... 8mo
willaful Aww, one of my all time favorites. I feel the audio must not have done it justice. 8mo

Megabooks @willaful I think the audiobook production definitely did not help my feelings towards this one. The first half reading the audible studios one really set a bad tone unfortunately. ☹️ 8mo
Chelsea.Poole I still need to read this one! 8mo

Tyler turns 80 today. This was one of my very first hardbacks, purchased circa 1986. I was in college then and I must‘ve picked it up at a bargain table, as money was always tight. I devoured so much of her early work, then stopped after Breathing Lessons. I‘m not quite sure why, except my interests probably turned elsewhere.

CarolynM Happy birthday Anne Tyler! 2y

Delightful and frequently very funny. Our protagonist Macon is a pedant and a grammar nazi with a "system" for everything from choosing a seat at the cinema to unloading the groceries and he and his equally loony family should by rights be insufferable, and it's testimony to Tyler's skill and humanity that we identify with them even as we laugh and wince at their foibles.

Ruthiella I only “discovered” Anne Tyler a few years ago and really enjoy her work. I‘ve not read this one yet, but I have fond memories of the film. 3y

This is a quite strange book. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but I couldn't really figure out what was going on with the protagonist, Macon Leary. He hates travel, but he's a travel writer. He's set in his ways, but he ends up moving in with a younger woman he has little in common with.

arlenefinnigan Is it a grief reaction to losing his son? Is it rebellious against his strangely stiff, overly formal upbringing and family? Is it a mid life crisis? Is the ending meant to be happy? It's really well written and engaging, but it's just.....quite odd. 3y
CarolynM I thought I was the only person who thought this book this book is strange. I generally love Anne Tyler, but this one not so much. 3y
arlenefinnigan @CarolynM this is the only one of hers I've read. It's well written, and I certainly wanted to read on to see how things panned out, but he's such an odd character and the plot just seemed..... I don't know, maybe that was the point, but it just all seemed so strange. 3y

CarolynM She's all about character rather than plot, I just didn't understand these characters at all. My favourite is 3y
arlenefinnigan @CarolynM that does sound better. 3y
ravenlee I read this one years ago and really disliked it. It‘s my MIL‘s favorite book (and a fave movie) and she gave it to me my first married Christmas. It felt like assigned reading! Luckily she‘s never asked me how I liked it. It took me five years after reading it to feel ok with taking it to the used bookstore! 😆 3y
arlenefinnigan @ravenlee yeah getting this from your MIL not long after the wedding is..... Hmmmm 😳😂 3y
ravenlee Indeed! She also gave me The Joy Luck Club that Christmas (started and failed, trying again this year). Again, kind of odd. She‘s also big into Ayn Rand, because her mom thought The Fountainhead was hilarious. It‘s...odd. She gave me a boxed Little House set because I‘d never read them, and now she always comments on me being such a fan (decidedly not) when she visits. (I‘ve been married 15 years, this is an ongoing challenge!) 3y
arlenefinnigan @ravenlee bloody hell. My sympathies! 3y

I think I‘ve finally got Ann Tyler, I loved this. As with all of her books I‘ve read there‘s no great drama. However the characters were fantastic, I loved that whilst they could be thought dull and boring the story actually shows and develops their eccentricity and humour. It was a book I thought about and looked forward to reading all day. A perfect comfort read for my frazzled mind (although I have conflicting issues with the ending!)

Thousand-Lives I read this recently and loved it too, but I have never been so conflicted about an ending. 4y

Macon Leary has lived a life of routine and loneliness. His marriage has unraveled following a tragic loss, and a new friendship with a dog-obedience trainer may be just the thing to send him down a new path. This book is full of humor and heaviness. Tyler is a master at writing about both the big and little things of life. Her characters are often eccentric, but feel real. The ending was not what I expected, but after reflection, it felt right.

So today I worked at a Brotherhood of St Laurence for their store opening, face painting and making balloons for all the lovely customers.
Of course at the end of my 4 hour shift (after I hungrily eat a free sausage in bread from their BBQ stand) I shop in the book section and found these little beauties!
I am listening to Clock Dance by Anne Tyler atm & I've just recently read her Patchwork Planet so I'm on the hunt for more Tyler novels!!

ljuliel Thanks for reminding me of Anne Tyler. I read some of her earlier books , but haven‘t read any new ones for several years. Accidental Tourist was my favorite of the ones I‘ve read. 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @ljuliel oh lovely, glad to remind you 😊 She is a new author to me and I'm eating her books up at the moment. Can't wait to read The Accidental Tourist. Also Breathing Lessons and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant which I've got copies of. What a terrific author she is! I'm on the hunt for more of her work now. 4y

After rereading this engaging classic about the brazen dog trainer who rocked the lives of the overly rigid Leary family, I had to watch the movie again. Director Larry Kasdan loved the book so much, he met with author Anne Tyler who showed him all the places in Baltimore that she wrote about. And that‘s where many of the scenes were shot. The story reminds us that life isn‘t very much fun without change and a few surprises. 😊

PurpleyPumpkin I saw this movie years ago! When I realized that it was based on a novel, I resolved to read it. But I never did!!! Thanks for this reminder. 😉👍🏽 5y

Eh, it was ok, but in the book‘s defense I didn‘t really want to read it, so I knew I probably wouldn‘t be a huge fan, lol. I needed to read a book published in 1985 for Book Bingo and I‘ve never read anything by Anne Tyler, so I figured I would give it a shot. It wasn‘t terrible or anything, and it was well written, but wasn‘t really my thing, either. *shrug*

Looks like I'm not the only one who is likely to look at their kindle library and think, "I #dontrememberbuyingthis."
I may not be able to say exactly which library book sale or thrift shop every book on my physical shelves came from, but I'll have a general idea. Whereas the kindle sales slip things into my kindle library, only to be found later, and wondered at... ????‍♀️⁉️

I don't think it's fair that this book has to follow Station Eleven. I can't remember the last time I finished a book and wished it were longer. Station Eleven was beauuuutifully written and left me with so many feelings.

On to Anne Tyler! I've wanted to try something of hers for a while and The Accidental Tourist was a #dailykindledeal last month. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.
