It‘s #Hour 42 (already?) and us #24in48 Readathoners get to pick our favorite read. Here‘s mine: Anne Tyler‘s 3rd novel (1970) about a painfully shy teenage girl who becomes wildly obsessed with a perplexing musician. To see how far this groupie will go to get this rock star‘s attention certainly got mine. 😳

After rereading this engaging classic about the brazen dog trainer who rocked the lives of the overly rigid Leary family, I had to watch the movie again. Director Larry Kasdan loved the book so much, he met with author Anne Tyler who showed him all the places in Baltimore that she wrote about. And that‘s where many of the scenes were shot. The story reminds us that life isn‘t very much fun without change and a few surprises. 😊

PurpleyPumpkin I saw this movie years ago! When I realized that it was based on a novel, I resolved to read it. But I never did!!! Thanks for this reminder. 😉👍🏽 5y

Anne Tyler intricately pieces together a portrait of the fractured Tull family with memories from each family member. But what they individually remember is so vastly different. And somehow through these discrepancies, humorous moments, forgotten dreams, deep scars and bitter rivalries, we discover why they hunger for this sacred bond. Simply brilliant! This may be my favorite Tyler novel to date! 🙌🏻

Chelsea.Poole Oh my, I love Anne Tyler! I've never read this one, but you've convinced me that I must. ☺️ 5y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I really do need to read this. 5y
UwannaPublishme @Chelsea.Poole @Joyfulmimi I love meeting Anne Tyler fans! 🙌🏻 My goal this year is to read all her books I haven‘t read yet. I can‘t believe I missed this one since it‘s one of her most popular books. It just floored me. I can‘t stop thinking about it. Keep me posted when you read it, so can compare notes. 😊 5y

minkyb Huge fan here. For decades. Have read them all! 5y
UwannaPublishme Nice to see you @minkyb ! I didn‘t know you were a big Anne Tyler fan too. So I must ask: Which ones are your favorites? 5y
minkyb Ah. So hard. My first was searching for Caleb so that will always hold a special place. Honestly I love them all. She creates such amazing characters. 5y
UwannaPublishme @minkyb I know what you mean. My first was Ladder of Years and still close to my heart. I never want her books to end because I feel so connected to her characters. The Tin Can Tree is up next! 5y
minkyb I really should re-read them all. I wish I was not such a slow reader. 5y
UwannaPublishme @minkyb You can‘t be slower than I am! 🐌🐌🐌🐌 5y

Isn‘t this a beautiful photo of 22-year-old Anne Tyler? It‘s on the back cover of this novel–her first–written in 1964. I had to laugh when I heard Anne wanted to burn her first 2 books (this one & Tin Can Tree) because she felt they were formless and wandering. Oh Anne, you have such a gift of defining your characters with the subtlest nuances. And they crawl into my heart every time I open any of your books-especially this one!
