Pompeii
Pompeii: A Novel | Robert Harris
All along the Mediterranean coast, the Roman empires richest citizens are relaxing in their luxurious villas, enjoying the last days of summer. The worlds largest navy lies peacefully at anchor in Misenum. The tourists are spending their money in the seaside resorts of Baiae, Herculaneum, and Pompeii. But the carefree lifestyle and gorgeous weather belie an impending cataclysm, and only one man is worried. The young engineer Marcus Attilius Primus has just taken charge of the Aqua Augusta, the enormous aqueduct that brings fresh water to a quarter of a million people in nine towns around the Bay of Naples. His predecessor has disappeared. Springs are failing for the ?rst time in generations. And now there is a crisis on the Augustas sixty-mile main linesomewhere to the north of Pompeii, on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Attiliusdecent, practical, and incorruptiblepromises Pliny, the famous scholar who commands the navy, that he can repair the aqueduct before the reservoir runs dry. His plan is to travel to Pompeii and put together an expedition, then head out to the place where he believes the fault lies. But Pompeii proves to be a corrupt and violent town, and Attilius soon discovers that there are powerful forces at workboth natural and man-madethreatening to destroy him. With his trademark elegance and intelligence, Robert Harris, bestselling author of Archangel and Fatherland, re-creates a world on the brink of disaster.

I am fortunate to have visited Pompeii and Mount Versuvius. It is so hard to imagine the power of the volcano when you see the large distance between them. But there are the remains of the town and people still being unearthed till today.

Oryx It's such a fascinating place 3y

I‘ve always had a fascination with volcanoes, earthquakes, tornados and hurricanes, so this book was one that I immensely enjoyed. It was a slower read than I expected because of all the detail and character establishment that happens in the first half of the book. However, I was never tempted to put it down!

Still working on this book, as reading outside proves somewhat distracting. Getting ready to take a break to eat the chicken salad I made, and sharing the recipe I used to complete a bingo square!

A historical thriller set during the final days of Pompeii. I enjoyed remembering the streets of Pompeii- and following along on a map of the site as the descriptions are clear enough to pinpoint where they are, though I also wish they had spent more time there.
I found the water/aqueduct stuff more fascinating than expected and the actual volcanic eruption underwhelming in terms of emotional tension.
Plot interesting, characters unengaging...

I have not read any of Robert Harris‘ works yet, and hope to try a few titles soon. Which one is your favorite that you‘d recommend to be my first Harris?

Amiable I have read “Pompeii.” I don‘t remember being very impressed by it, though. 5y
AlaMich I enjoyed Pompeii quite a bit. The aqueduct premise might sound uninteresting, but don‘t be turned off. It‘s a great book! I also really liked Enigma. 5y
KathyWheeler I really liked Fatherland. 5y
batsy I've not read any of his books either but I just stacked his most recent one because a review in Guardian made it sound really good 5y

The aqueduct was far more interesting than the characters, who I found to be rather flat cliches to the point it was fairly obvious within a few pages of each character being introduced who was going to survive.

Haven‘t read the tagged book but most of the pictures are from the Pompeii exhibit at the Richmond science museum, except the dog in front of the gravestone— that‘s in the Hollywood Cemetery. We did do deliberate exercise walking today, but that was in a mall, so no pictures.

cewilf Such a cool exhibit! That‘s awesome 5y
KathyWheeler @RachelO the thing that creeped me out was the speculum— it‘s design has been completely unchanged for more than 2000 years. My husband did point out they are now made of stainless steel. 5y
rockpools @KathyWheeler 😳😳😳 Won‘t even ask what it was made of! 5y

Were they using the word awesome in 79 AD? 🤔 I don‘t know but this usually throws me off during reading. It‘s not used a lot but such slight modern language bugs me. I know it‘s fiction based on a true event, but I like things, such as language, to be accurate.
The story is interesting though and I always loved the story of Pompeii.

Texreader That would have thrown me too! 6y
CSeydel Its used in the Bible, so I wouldn‘t be surprised if it was used in Ancient Rome. The Latin equivalent, of course. 6y
toofondofbooks Its probably the more traditional meaning the author is using rather than the more contemporary. These days it's almost become a form of slang. But it does make you do a doubletake. 6y
Ash.on.the.line @CSeydel @toofondofbooks interesting! I guess as language evolves we have these moments. 6y
KristinaRay @CSeydel already pointed out it was in the Bible, but I wanted to add that it meant something along the lines of fearful or dreadful wonder. 6y

The mostly male cast of characters had no depth, but lots of historical research on aqueducts made this readable

Harris has a gift for making stories set thousands of years ago feel like modern thrillers, and Pompeii was no exception. I'll have to try one of his books set in the present day sometime.

I didn't know Robert Harris was local to me until I did a bit of research today. I loved his novel Pompeii. Even the technical descriptions of the aquaduct system were fascinating.

It was fiction, but the level of detail made it seem educational. As an engineer all the information on roman aqueducts kept me thrilled, even knowing how it had to end (I mean, it's in the title, right?)
