Pompeii
Pompeii: A Novel | Robert Harris
All along the Mediterranean coast, the Roman empire’s richest citizens are relaxing in their luxurious villas, enjoying the last days of summer. The world’s largest navy lies peacefully at anchor in Misenum. The tourists are spending their money in the seaside resorts of Baiae, Herculaneum, and Pompeii. But the carefree lifestyle and gorgeous weather belie an impending cataclysm, and only one man is worried. The young engineer Marcus Attilius Primus has just taken charge of the Aqua Augusta, the enormous aqueduct that brings fresh water to a quarter of a million people in nine towns around the Bay of Naples. His predecessor has disappeared. Springs are failing for the first time in generations. And now there is a crisis on the Augusta’s sixty-mile main line—somewhere to the north of Pompeii, on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Attilius—decent, practical, and incorruptible—promises Pliny, the famous scholar who commands the navy, that he can repair the aqueduct before the reservoir runs dry. His plan is to travel to Pompeii and put together an expedition, then head out to the place where he believes the fault lies. But Pompeii proves to be a corrupt and violent town, and Attilius soon discovers that there are powerful forces at work—both natural and man-made—threatening to destroy him. With his trademark elegance and intelligence, Robert Harris, bestselling author of Archangel and Fatherland, re-creates a world on the brink of disaster.

The aqueduct was far more interesting than the characters, who I found to be rather flat cliches to the point it was fairly obvious within a few pages of each character being introduced who was going to survive.

Haven‘t read the tagged book but most of the pictures are from the Pompeii exhibit at the Richmond science museum, except the dog in front of the gravestone— that‘s in the Hollywood Cemetery. We did do deliberate exercise walking today, but that was in a mall, so no pictures.

cewilf Such a cool exhibit! That‘s awesome 1w
KathyWheeler @RachelO the thing that creeped me out was the speculum— it‘s design has been completely unchanged for more than 2000 years. My husband did point out they are now made of stainless steel. 1w

Were they using the word awesome in 79 AD? 🤔 I don‘t know but this usually throws me off during reading. It‘s not used a lot but such slight modern language bugs me. I know it‘s fiction based on a true event, but I like things, such as language, to be accurate.
The story is interesting though and I always loved the story of Pompeii.

Texreader That would have thrown me too! 11mo
CSeydel Its used in the Bible, so I wouldn‘t be surprised if it was used in Ancient Rome. The Latin equivalent, of course. 11mo
toofondofbooks Its probably the more traditional meaning the author is using rather than the more contemporary. These days it's almost become a form of slang. But it does make you do a doubletake. 11mo
Ash.on.the.line @CSeydel @toofondofbooks interesting! I guess as language evolves we have these moments. 11mo
KristinaRay @CSeydel already pointed out it was in the Bible, but I wanted to add that it meant something along the lines of fearful or dreadful wonder. 11mo

I love waking up early to sit outside and read. It‘s still a touch chilly, the street is quiet, and there‘s no one to bother me!

The mostly male cast of characters had no depth, but lots of historical research on aqueducts made this readable

Harris has a gift for making stories set thousands of years ago feel like modern thrillers, and Pompeii was no exception. I'll have to try one of his books set in the present day sometime.

TBR pile question: a book you couldn‘t help yourself but to get?
This pile was just bought because well I couldn‘t help myself. All these also came off my #wishlist also. I am not in the secret Santa so it‘s justified right? 😅

The trip I've been looking forward to for weeks finally arrived today - Pompeii. What an incredible opportunity to be able to see ruins from the Roman disaster of 79AD. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and made the tagged book I read a few days before travelling to Italy really come to life. A somber, sobering and wonderful experience.

GondorGirl Thank you for sharing pictures. This is one of the locations on my travel bucket list! 2y
LauraBeth Love your pics - I'll probably never get there - so share away! 2y

For me this book started as a frustrating read then at fifty percent became an engrossing one. I found the start a little too technical and, through no fault of the author, the Roman names challenging. However, halfway in and the story gripped me: it was a tragic but compelling read. This probably won't be a book for everyone but it's a pick for me nonetheless ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TrishB And it's nearly time for you to go! 2y

Caroline2 It's a cracking read; I have no idea how they could take such good source material, have Jon Snow starring as the main guy then make such a mess of it?!?! 😆 2y
Ms_T @Caroline2 Jon Snow? I'm intrigued to watch it now! 😂 2y

My bank holiday read is going to be this - a fictional story based around the real eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. Of course, my main reason for reading it is that in just over a week I'll actually be visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius!

Izai.Amorim Cool! Was there last year, Pompei only. Heard that Herculaneum is much nicer, next time maybe. If you allow me a tip, get to Pompei as early as possible. There is no shade whatsoever and after 12 or 1 it gets almost unbearable to walk around. You can buy the ticket in advance online, the line is much shorter in this case. 2y
TrishB Brilliant! Enjoy 😀 2y

It was fiction, but the level of detail made it seem educational. As an engineer all the information on roman aqueducts kept me thrilled, even knowing how it had to end (I mean, it's in the title, right?)
