Eating Animals
Eating Animals | Jonathan Safran Foer
Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian. But on the brink of fatherhood-facing the prospect of having to make dietary choices on a child's behalf-his casual questioning took on an urgency His quest for answers ultimately required him to visit factory farms in the middle of the night, dissect the emotional ingredients of meals from his childhood, and probe some of his most primal instincts about right and wrong. Brilliantly synthesizing philosophy, literature, science, memoir and his own detective work, Eating Animals explores the many fictions we use to justify our eating habits-from folklore to pop culture to family traditions and national myth-and how such tales can lull us into a brutal forgetting. Marked by Foer's profound moral ferocity and unvarying generosity, as well as the vibrant style and creativity that made his previous books, Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, widely loved, Eating Animals is a celebration and a reckoning, a story about the stories we've told-and the stories we now need to tell.

This was educational and eye opening that has lead me to look into where my animal products come from. This is an important read for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. He doesn't so much push vegetarianism as take an anti factory farm stance encouraging people to learn where their.meat comes from. This was written pre COVID and I would #highlyrecommend for the section on pandemics and WHO'S comcern for the next one. It is 100%accurate. #mustread

Oof. This book is great, but hard. I‘ve been a pescatarian since my early 20s, but have mostly kept my head in the sand regarding the atrocities of factory farming and fishing. Now that I know, I for sure will continue not eating land animals and am reconsidering eating fish/seafood. FYI: I listened on audio, which made it feel a little disorganized (my guess is that print is more cohesive feeling).

First April #roll100 complete!

Suet624 Same here, since I was 13. Raised four kids eating that way as well. 2y
Darklunarose It‘s pretty hard hitting how things get to the kitchen. 2y

Happy #EarthDay! This is a great read for anyone looking to reduce their impact on our planet. 🌿

Foer considers why we eat meat from many angles: ethical, emotional, economic, and environmental. He interviews animal rights activists and farmers, looks at the human impact in terms of disease control and workers‘ rights, and delves into his own moral quandaries. My only criticism of the book is that he largely ignores the dairy industry.

I‘ve taken some time off Litsy and reading in general but recently after reading Matt Haig‘s wonderful books twinned with headspace I‘m actually making time in the day for the important things and looking after myself more and it feels really good! Just started this but couldn‘t recommend ‘Reasons To Stay Alive‘ and ‘Notes On A Nervous Planet‘ enough!

This book is a game changer. I will never look at the food I consume in the same way again, plus I'm pretty sure this author has turned me into a vegetarian for life. Not for the faint of heart, for sure.

This is an intense read and a gut wrenching look into the American food industry. I was an omnivore at heart, and I read this book under my spouse‘s urging. I have to say that I can say with confidence that changing our house into a vegetarian household was a right decision. The author gives many perspectives and is honest in his wrestling with what he eats and feeds his family.

This book is a very good introduction into the realities of the factory farm system and is important for anyone that is still eating meat and especially chicken. It is written as a journalist and does not take a moral side one way or the other. He simply states facts. That are disturbing but facts none the less. If you do eat meat I think this is a great book to start with to see what the real choice you are making at a restaurant or supermarket.

"The question of eating animals hit chords that resonate deeply with our sense of self - our memories, desires, values. Those resonances are potentially controversial, potentially threatening, potentially inspiring, but always filled with meaning."

JSF writes very passionately and honestly. I was not prepared to shed tears, but I did. I wish factory farms would disappear. This book has left me very conflicted.

Dogs are wonderful, and in many ways unique. But they are remarkably unremarkable in their intellectual and experiential capacities. Pigs are every bit as intelligent and feeling, by any sensible definition of the words. They can't hop into the back of a Volvo, but they can fetch, run and play, be mischievous, and reciprocate affection. So why don't they get to curl up by the fire? Why can't they at least be spared being tossed on the fire?

My husband asked me repeatedly as I read this book if I was enjoying it. No, I never enjoyed it, but it's not a book to be "enjoyed." I appreciated Safran Foer's description of his own wavering vegetarianism over the years. I think because of that, I finished this book feeling moved and not guilted. I also have a more positive view of those very few & far between farmers who truly try to do right by their animals.

alohabetty I can't with good conscience eat anything that may have come from a factory farm again, and that's pretty much everything that's not plant-based, but I am still rooting for the ethical farmers to pull ahead and get out from under the mega corporations that treat their animals and their employees like commodities and not living beings. 7y

The story of the poor bull in Queens today who escaped a slaughterhouse and died reminds me that no animal wants to die and certainly doesn't "give" his meat to us. So today, I'd love to recommend Eating Animals to your TBR.
