The Most Fun We Ever Had
The Most Fun We Ever Had | Claire Lombardo
"A gripping and poignant ode to a messy, loving family in all its glory." --Madeline Miller A dazzling, multigenerational novel in which the four adult daughters of a Chicago couple--still madly in love after forty years--recklessly ignite old rivalries until a long-buried secret threatens to shatter the lives they've built. When Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, they are blithely ignorant of all that's to come. By 2016, their four radically different daughters are each in a state of unrest: Wendy, widowed young, soothes herself with booze and younger men; Violet, a litigator-turned-stay-at-home-mom, battles anxiety and self-doubt when the darkest part of her past resurfaces; Liza, a neurotic and newly tenured professor, finds herself pregnant with a baby she's not sure she wants by a man she's not sure she loves; and Grace, the dawdling youngest daughter, begins living a lie that no one in her family even suspects. Above it all, the daughters share the lingering fear that they will never find a love quite like their parents'. As the novel moves through the tumultuous year following the arrival of Jonah Bendt--given up by one of the daughters in a closed adoption fifteen years before--we are shown the rich and varied tapestry of the Sorensons' past: years marred by adolescence, infidelity, and resentment, but also the transcendent moments of joy that make everything else worthwhile. Spanning nearly half a century, and set against the quintessential American backdrop of Chicago and its prospering suburbs, Lombardo's debut explores the triumphs and burdens of love, the fraught tethers of parenthood and sisterhood, and the baffling mixture of affection, abhorrence, resistance, and submission we feel for those closest to us. In painting this luminous portrait of a family's becoming, Lombardo joins the ranks of writers such as Celeste Ng, Elizabeth Strout, and Jonathan Franzen as visionary chroniclers of our modern lives.

So disappointing. I had such high hopes and it‘s had such good reviews. But I found it long winded, pretentious and full of characters that I hated. Also, it uses the words “retarded” and “schizoid”. Not cool. I got to page 150 (of 500!) before I started jumping forward and skipping bits. Nothing improved. Urgh.

A great story about a family. The daughters of a family all grow up into totally different people with their own issues. Even the most perfect seeming relationship has its troubles.

Parts of this were great- but it was a lengthy 500+ page book so slightly draggy in parts. Good family drama with several interesting stories going on, spanning over a few decades.

What a story! It took me ages to read but was such a great read about a family, not sure if I should call it a saga but I think that‘s the closest word. It was set in the present but went back through the family history and was so well written and honest about who they all were. I would definitely read more from Lombardo, although maybe in paperback (this was a 500+ page hardback, not ideal for taking on holiday which I foolishly did!!)

Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻. I have it on my shelf & I‘m looking forward to it 2mo

3 ⭐️- This big tome of a book looks at the complicated relationships in the Sorenson family. Four sisters, loving parents, hidden pasts and familial angst make up this dysfunctional family drama.

While I found this book long winded in several parts, I appreciated the topics it addresses. I just wish it was more concise & time was spent on character development.

Hold on tight because THE MOST FUN WE EVER HAD is a hefty family drama set in Chicago, and spread over half a century. It‘s a serious reading commitment at 530 pages, but well worth the effort. Oh, this book. Claire Lombardo's The Most Fun We Ever Had is a *tad* bit intimidating at 544 pages. (It's not that I don't read big books--I love them--but usually, they're fantasy. Or historical fiction. But a mostly-contemporary, family novel? Not necessarily calling out "big book" to me. That's fodder for another discussion.) (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Anyway, I adore this novel. I somehow both don't know that it *needed* to be over 500 pages AND feel as if every page is absolutely perfect. The observations about family and motherhood and married relationships and parenthood are so, so true. Marilyn and David are, from the outside, the perfect, invulnerable couple. They're the parents to four amazing and successful girls, and now grandparents to a selection of interesting grandsons. ⬇️ 3mo
UnabridgedPod But as Lombardo unveils their lives, alternating between the current lives of the two parents, four daughters, and one secret grandson(!) AND between the present and the past (beginning in the 1970s, when Marilyn and David first met), we come to KNOW these people. I found myself thinking about them, even dreaming about them, ⬇️ 3mo
UnabridgedPod because of the moments they are so exasperated with their children that they have to go to another room or love them so much they're moved to tears. These are relationships as I've *experienced* them (sorry for all of the asterisks and capital letters--it's a book that calls out for them), and they moved me to think and feel and keep on reading. I am totally on board for whatever Claire Lombardo writes next. 3mo

I had so much fun with the first month of #LMPBC, but I also thought as I read, "I don't really know these readers, and it's fun. But wouldn't it be fun to do it with my three best friends from high school, as we're spread across four states?" They agreed and #homegirlsread was born! This is my first pick.
