Gods of Jade and Shadow
Gods of Jade and Shadow | Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Mayan God of Death sends a young woman on a harrowing, life-changing journey in this dark fairy tale inspired by Mexican folklore, for readers of The Song of Achilles and Uprooted. Here we shall begin to tell a story: a tale of a throne lost, of monsters and magic. A tale of gods and of the shadow realm. But this, our story, it begins in our world, in the land of mortals. It begins with a woman. For this story, it is her story. It begins with her. The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather's house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty, small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own. Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather's room. She opens it--and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan God of Death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea's demise, but success could make her dreams come true. In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey, from the jungles of Yucatn to the bright lights of Mexico City--and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld. Mixing the excitement of the Roaring Twenties with Prehispanic mythology, Gods of Jade and Shadow is a vivid, wildly imaginative historical fantasy.

I enjoyed this book, although it felt more like romance with strong fantasy elements. I felt like there wasn't much that surprised me, but I did thoroughly enjoy the direction the ending took.

Like a 4.5 stars. This book was pretty good. I loved that it felt very personal for me, being Hispanic. I love that Casiopea mirrors a lot of my own thoughts when it comes to the Hispanic culture and our own indigenous roots that have seem to have gotten lost to Catholicism. I love Casiopea's rebellion towards the traditional sexism in Mexican culture and I saw myself in her character. I loved the romance as well.

4/5 ⭐️ I enjoyed this book so much more than Mexican Gothic! Based on Mexican folklore featuring the gods of death. Loved the magic and adventure! If there were no animal sacrifices then this would have been a five star read.

ChaoticMissAdventures @Kammbia1 I know some don't enjoy her magical realism in Mexican Gothic, it isn't "believable" but I thought it was creative, creepy and we'll written. I hope you enjoy her! 4mo

I couldn‘t get into the story. Maybe because it feels a bit as a retell of a fairy tale and I am not fond of those. I didn‘t feel like The world the author created was convincing and real so I lost interest

I haven‘t come across much Mayan folklore, so I had no knowledge of the story this was spun from. Now I want to know all about Popol Vuh. This book was enjoyable. An epic quest, a slow burn love story, travel, heroes and demons, it has a bit of everything. I felt like the ending was a bit rushed, but liked the book regardless. #lennox #catsoflitsy #readharder2021

Think Greek hero journey but with Mexican mythology.
Casiopea, living as a servant in her grandfather‘s house, opened a forbidden chest and accidentally resurrected Hun-Kamé, one of the gods of the underworld. Her need for adventure and fear for her life has her following the god across Mexico in his quest to retake his throne from his treacherous brother.

Excellent read. Garcia Moreno has a way with words that is easy and lyrical at the same time. Not a long novel. Easily read in a day. That's good though, no getting lost in side plots.

I just couldn't get into this until the very last bit of it. But I've been in a reading funk, so it could just be me. I loved American Gothic, so I know it's not the writing style that didnt do it for me. It reminded me of an oversimplified, less entertaining version of Neil Gaiman's American Gods.

There‘s a lot to admire in this jewel of a book—the dark and enchanting Mexican mythology, the tough and earnest teenage protagonist, and the explorations it offers both of the terrains of Jazz Age Mexico and ancient, mythic Xibalba, as well as the terrains of retribution and reconciliation. All said, though, this is a soft pick for me because I felt distant from the feelings in the book, especially the slow burn romance, which I wanted more of.

#doublespin book for February. Loved this Mayan mythology novel set in the 20´s with a strong teenage female protagonist! Twin gods are vying for control over Xibalba. Hun Kame, the twin trying to regain his thrown, is inadvertently awoken by Cassiopeia and a quest ensues to take back what has been stolen from him by his twin brother. He shows her the world beyond her small village and she teaches him lessons about love and mercy.! @TheAromaofBook

This one is a soft pick for me, and I'm not even sure exactly why. It seems to have all the right ingredients, but something is lacking - somehow, it's still kind of bland. Usually prefer third person narration, but here it makes the characters feel very distant, and there are multiple times where the author explains something about a place or tradition or myth, but it isn't clear whether this is something the characters also realize, or if it ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) is just a little tidbit the author is giving the reader. I don't know, it seemed like I should have really loved this book & instead I'm just very lukewarm about it. I didn't hate it, either, I just finished it with very 3.5* feelings haha

#BookReport - Finished two of my ongoing reads, plus three other books (and technically Of Beasts & Beauties was an anthology of five books so...). Still reading Mansfield Park (which I don't really remember so I'm actually quite engaged in what is going to happen next!) & am about halfway through the tagged, which is okay, but shaping up to be a 3.5* read at this point. Hoping to finish it today. No bingo yet, either!!

Cinfhen I‘ve been curious about your tagged book 📚 but 3.5 isn‘t calling to me 🙄😬💜 11mo
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - I can't quite put my finger on why this book isn't magical. Usually I prefer 3rd person narration, but this one just seems very distant, somehow - sometimes it's hard to tell what the characters know vs what the author is telling the reader as an aside. I don't know. Not a bad story, but also not exactly enthralling. 11mo
Cinfhen I wasn‘t crazy about her other book so I‘m definitely waiting on Jade 11mo

I had a lot of fun with this one despite it being a somewhat historical fantasy. It combines the myths of the Popol Vuh with 1920s Mexico and creates a unique quest for an ordinary girl. I loved Casiopea and her stubborn nature who still sees the good in people even when she hasn't had the best luck in life.

I got this book from BOTM when it first came out, then saw a lot of mixed reviews that made me set it aside, then read and enjoyed Mexican Gothic and decided I should get to this sooner rather than later.

I really loved this book! Great historical time and place, fantasy elements with Mayan gods, and an amazing journey/quest for a sympathetic female main character. I finished it in one day, and might just have liked it more than MG.

Book 5 I read Gods of Jade and Sorrow because I liked Mexican Gothic. Two very different books, both well-done and unique. This has been referred to as a Cinderella story, but the similarity is initial-only and minimal. It's a hero's journey; a nobody unleashes a trapped God and, against her will, travels the underworld to help him reclaim his kingdom.

Just finished my first read of the year. This book did not disappoint. The 1920‘s setting coupled with the Mayan legends was fantastic. The writing was also just beautiful and ethereal. I have heard this compared to a fairy tale and I can absolutely see that.

This book and her other book from 2020, Mexican Gothic, have both been standouts for me, so I‘m super excited to see what she will write next.

DNF-ing at page 65. I can already tell this isn't going to have the world-building I need in my fantasy reads, which I honestly should have known based on the page count. No hard feelings on this though, as I have plenty of bookish friends who I know will devour this!

I struggled to finish this one. The beginning had me hooked so hard, then it was kind of tedious and I'm not 100% sure why. The research, the mythology, the world-building, all beautiful. It might just be that I didn't connect with the protagonist. Maybe she was too YA ish for me? I ended up setting this aside and coming back to finish a few weeks later.

I'll check out other works by the author, though.
