Tales of the Jazz Age
Tales of the Jazz Age | F Scott Fitzgerald
21 posts | 15 read | 19 to read
'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' sees a baby born in 1860 begin life as an old man and then age backwards. F. Scott Fitzgerald hinted at this kind of inversion when he called his era 'a generation grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken'. Perhaps nowhere in American fiction has this 'Lost Generation' been more vividly preserved than in Fitzgerald's short fiction. Spanning the early twentieth-century American landscape, this collection captures, with Fitzgerald's signature blend of enchantment and disillusionment, America during the Jazz Age.

I definitely prefer the Flappers and Philosophers collection to this one. First, so many of these stories were overtly racist, it was pretty sickening. Second, having characters commit suicide right at the end is a cop out to me. Third, why was Benjamin Button‘s mother never mentioned? How do they think an old man can physically be born? So dumb. Really disappointing and not well written or thought out.

UGH. This! This is in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a well known story by F Scott Fitzgerald. That‘s awful. 😡😡😡

I‘ve been frustrated with the racist writing in some of his short stories in this and other collections, but this one is the absolute worst. I would be totally fine if “Fantasies” went out of print or this story was taken out of the collection in future printings.

Good collection of short stories from Fitzgerald...some classics and some not really to my taste. But overall, definitely recommended.

Mehso-so

My serial read for the month. I don‘t think short stories work with serial reader for me. I can barely remember the first story I read. There were a few good ones but nothing that amazed me. The daily pace just didn‘t let the stories flow.

Finished this treadmill read a few days ago. Hate to give this a so-so, but these were Fitzgerald‘s earlier works — just a few I liked. Some I‘ve read before elsewhere, such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button — that one is good though.

This owl was my grandma‘s and kind of looks like Scott, I think!

JazzFeathers I have contrasting feelings toward Fitzgerald's work. Some l really like. Some others, not so much 7y

ValerieAndBooks @JazzFeathers I think a lot of his stuff is uneven, for various reasons; but what‘s good is very good indeed! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @AceOnRoam glad you see it too 😂— reminds me of pictures where Fitzgerald has his hair parted in the middle 😊. 7y
AceOnRoam Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it. Now I can't look at him without thinking of your grandma's owl. 7y

BooksForYears @DimeryRene I randomly found one of them at my local B&N, and that started the craze for me. Some of them have black backgrounds, which I'm not as big a fan of, and THE GREAT GATSBY is a white background with copper foiling. 7y

When I was in high school, my favorite thing to read about was The Lost Generation of expatriate Americans living in Paris in the 1920s - especially F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway.

Branwen SAME! I am so in love with Fitzgerald and Hemingway its a little bit sad! :-P 8y
Hollie I love the Lost Generation! I am so fortunate to get to teach the Jazz Age in my classes and, of course, I always bring in Papa Hemingway and F. Scott and crew 8y
mom2bugnbee Have y'all seen Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris"? Allen is hit or miss for me, but I adored this one, & it features everyone you're talking about. Highly recommend! 8y

JazzFeathers The 1920s were an awesome time and, personally, l think they were unsettingly similar to our own times. So many things resonate. I think this is the main reasons why l love them so much 8y
JazzFeathers @mom2bugnbee Haven't seen the film yet, but it's on my list of gilms to watch :) 8y

The Art Deco Fitzgerald Collection is one of the prettiest book series out there, and they evoke the decadence and opulence of the Roaring Twenties!

So apparently it's hard to photograph metallic covers. But this beautiful copy came this week, and it's so chilly and cloudy this morning I can finally bust out my tea. Sadly, I won't be able to read all day since I have to go drive two hours to work on a film all day... But a girl can dream.

I'm admittedly not a big "book series" reader, but I do love a beautifully published author series. One of my favorites is the Coralie Bickford-Smith "Fitzgerald Classics".

Excellent read. Pleasantly surprised that Fitzgerald's short stories are as good as his novels. Definitely recommended.
