They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us
They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us | Hanif Abdurraqib
"A Best Book of 2017" NPR, Buzzfeed, Paste Magazine, Esquire, Chicago Tribune, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, CBC, Stereogum, National Post, Entropy, Heavy, Book Riot, Chicago Review of Books, The Los Angeles Review, Michigan Daily *American Booksellers Association (ABA) 'December 2017 Indie Next List Great Reads' *Midwest Indie Bestseller In an age of confusion, fear, and loss, Hanif Abdurraqib's is a voice that matters. Whether he's attending a Bruce Springsteen concert the day after visiting Michael Brown's grave, or discussing public displays of affection at a Carly Rae Jepsen show, he writes with a poignancy and magnetism that resonates profoundly. In the wake of the nightclub attacks in Paris, he recalls how he sought refuge as a teenager in music, at shows, and wonders whether the next generation of young Muslims will not be afforded that opportunity now. While discussing the everyday threat to the lives of black Americans, Abdurraqib recounts the first time he was ordered to the ground by police officers: for attempting to enter his own car. In essays that have been published by the New York Times, MTV, and Pitchfork, among othersalong with original, previously unreleased essaysAbdurraqib uses music and culture as a lens through which to view our world, so that we might better understand ourselves, and in so doing proves himself a bellwether for our times. "Funny, painful, precise, desperate, and loving throughout. Not a day has sounded the same since I read him." Greil Marcus, Village Voice

Absolutely loved this book of essays about music and identity and also life. The emo ones especially struck a chord with me, but so many excellent points here. Highly recommend.

Abdurraqib is so brilliant. There is so much feeling here, there is so much narrative in the music that I have loved all my life without knowing. So much love beyond that, too.
Not sure if it is a coincidence I have plans to see four different live shows in the next few months. 🤙🏼

Many years ago, Two Dollar Radio offered books for life to the first 20 people who got their logo tattooed in a visible place. So of course I did it! (Imagine if every publisher did this??! I would be covered head to toe in tattoos.😝) And here we are, seven years later! I count several of these titles among my favorite books. A WORD FOR WOMAN IS WILDERNESS will be out March 19. I love Two Dollar Radio!!!TATTOO CLUB FOR LIFE. Er, literally. 😝🖤📚

StephBengtson @Bookish.SAM it‘s SO good. I wish I hadn‘t waited so long to read it. I‘m feeling waves of nostalgia with all of the emo bands he writes about. 8mo
Bookish.SAM And how he thinks and writes so deeply about that music... takes me back to my teen days when I was all angsts and would engage that closely with music. With jobs, bills, mortgages... I don‘t do that anymore. 8mo

I feel like essay collections don‘t get enough love. They‘re like short stories but TRUE. To celebrate my love of essays, I compiled a list of 50 great ones that have come out recently-ish! https://bookriot.com/2018/07/19/must-read-contemporary-essay-collections/

Ok, I‘m calling it. These essays are well-written and thoughtful, but I‘m not connecting to them. They largely revolve around current music, which I really don‘t listen to, and speak a bit about social justice and racism. If that equation was switched, I think I‘d love it.

In 2005, Pete [Wentz] downed a bottle of pills in a Best Buy parking lot while listening to Jeff Buckley, who drowned in the Wolf River Harbor at age 30 and who was the son of Tim Buckley, who overdosed on heroin at age 28. And so what I‘m saying is that our heroes spill from their heroes and their heroes before them, and at some point, everyone wants out.

For the record, the title of this book was not all caps on the cover. Essays on pop culture, music, and events in the world (circa 2016). Some were great but many of the essays did not resonate with me.

Hi Littens! It‘s been awhile! I‘ve been extremely busy with work, so I‘ve had very little time to post. Anyway, I only had time to visit my favorite Minneapolis indie bookstore yesterday, but it was so great. It‘s been so great watching Moon Palace Books grown from a small little bookstore, to a lovely and resourceful community space. It was so great to see a packed store with people engaged in a poetry reading from their neighbors. 💓

vivastory Nice! I'll definitely be adding this store to my list next time I'm in Minneapolis 1y
StephBengtson @vivastory it really is a great store and they just added a cafe inside of it. Definitely check it out! 1y
vivastory What part of Minneapolis is it? 1y
StephBengtson South. It‘s on minnehaha and lake street. 1y
vivastory Not too far away from Magers & Quinn. I'm hoping to go for a few days in July or August 1y

I‘m not a big music buff, but I still couldn‘t put this book down. The essays weave the personal, political, & musical in an epic way. Like, going to a Springsteen concert conjures thoughts on Michael Brown. It‘s just SO well done.

I‘d recommend it to anyone, but esp music lovers. It‘s music & culture writing like I‘ve never seen before. That‘s why it‘s #3 on my #top10 of 2017.

A book of moving, insightful essays about the intersections of music and culture, punk, rap, and being a black Muslim man. He‘s a poet and this book, although not poetry, moved me to pieces. I‘m glad I read it this year, because it was a five ⭐️ read for me. “And I do imagine that it must be something, to be able to decide at what volume, tone, and tenor you will allow black people to enter your life, for praise of for scolding.” This book is 🔥.

A volume of sharp, insightful criticism about the intersections of music and culture, specifically punk, rap, and being a black, Muslim man who has often been the only brown face at a show, but also grief, loss, and hope. Abdurraqib is also a poet and it shows in the way he constructs his sentences: “No one decides when the people we love are actually gone. May we all be buried on our own terms.”
