The Au Pair
The Au Pair | Emma Rous
"An addictive, highly commercial suspense novel featuring a grand estate, terrible secrets, and a young woman who bears witness to it all. If V.C. Andrews, Kate Morton, and Lexie Elliot had a love child, Emma Rous and THE AU PAIR would be it. Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother Danny were born in the middle of summer at their family's estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle. Now an adult, and mourning the recent death of her father, Seraphine begins to go through his belongings, when she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is beautifully dressed, smiling serenely, and holding just one baby. Who is the child and what really happened that day? Someone knows the truth, if only Seraphine can find her. The Au Pair" --

Great compelling read to start with but the story turned out to be impossible for me to believe.

I have given this a pick as I really did enjoy the early parts of the story.

It kept me interested, but I really hated all the characters except for Edwin. I was a bit confused about the ending, specifically regarding Vera.

This was a really interesting read full of twists and turns. The story is told by Seraphine in the present and Laura in the past when everything happened. Its cleverly written and builds to a dramatic ending. I figured out some of the secrets but one or two took me by surprise. It does make you think about how you would react in that situation.
I liked Seraphine, she was an interesting character.

The first 75% was just perfect for summer reading but after that it went to pieces. The Big Twists are pretty easy to predict and then they spend what feels like a million pages slowly over explaining what you already know. About 25 pages from the end I just quit. Also, I‘ve had a baby. No way two women give birth at home, unassisted, and then one of them runs around for hours and no one is like, hey, you sure are bleeding like A LOT.

britt_brooke This is not my kind of book, so I wasn‘t planning to read it anyway, but I love reading “pan” reviews. I appreciate the honesty. 😊 1mo

The Au Pair is a page turner! I liked how the story got the reader involved right away and was nonstop suspense from there. There were many times, I found myself whispering, “WTF is going on!?”

I loved the cover of this book. It's what drew me in, and the first 75% percent of the book was exciting and gripping. But as a mother, I find it impossible that two women could give birth on the same day, in the same home, unassisted. Then, that Laura's babies were pre-mature and neither needed hospital care? And why didn't the police officers notice that there were two birth locations that needed cleaning? Yikes.

🙌🏻 I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this book! Read it in half a day - couldn‘t put it down. Mystery, thriller, fiction. It truly answers the question “who is the child, and what really happened that day?”, except with a twist at the end; it took a bit more concentration the last 1/5 of the book. SO MUCH HAPPENS. Would definitely recommend 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5

TOTOROOOOOOOOO 💙❤️💚🤯

I will freely admit this-I only read “The Au Pair” because I thought the cover was pretty 🤷🏻‍♀️ It‘s a decent mystery about explosive family secrets, the kind of book that‘s a blast to dig into and race to solve the mysteries before the characters do. Unfortunately the ending is...not great. I had a problem with the convoluted reveals but “The Au Pair” was still a fine way to pass a lazy morning. Just don‘t expect more.

5🌟 This is an addictive and enchanting mystery/psychological thriller! Dark family secrets, lies, twists and turns, loved it! This felt like a classic gothic mystery. Very atmospheric. Reminded me of V.C Andrews books a lot. I really enjoyed Seraphine's narrative! At times I wondered whether her accounts of things was reliable or not. And I really liked Laura's character. This was such a tangled web, to untangle.

More of a slow burn than I usually like, but a fairly solid mystery with great setting and atmosphere. I definitely wouldn‘t call it a thriller as it‘s often billed, and it‘s a bit far-fetched when tying all the bits and pieces together, but it‘d be a great beachy read. 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So, we picked up a lot of souveniers on our Disney trip, including one I am NOT happy about. I have a spider bite. On my scalp. That is now infected.

I am terrified of spiders. And my husband keeps joking that the large bump on my scalp is really spider eggs that will be hatching soon. 😩😩😩

So, while waiting for my antibiotic at Target, I treated myself to more books. 😁😁 I think I‘ve earned them.

Another wonderful book that I read in one long gulp. It was told in two voices 25 years apart, by two innocent young women, one whose decisions and silence profoundly affected the life of the other. A mystery that one could almost… but not quite… figure out. Well defined characters. Lovely British setting. And read beautifully by Elizabeth Sastre.

I went book shopping for the first time this year yesterday. I know I own lots of books already that I need to read, but when one store is having a sale and another sends you a coupon, it's hard to not to take advantage of that. Im disappointed. I wanted to love this but i just cant. I was never really lost in the story. I felt like someone was just telling me this convoluted tale full of plot holes. the characters had no depth and had all these random revelations that forced convenient endings. It had promise but maybe could of used a rewrite or two.

Bailedbailed

Ugh. I tried. However, I am throwing in the towel on this. I usually give something around 150 pages before I bail, but at 78 pages I could honestly care less. This story just isn‘t that interesting and from other reviews I‘ve read even the three stars say it gets quite ridiculous in order to move the plot along. That‘s all I needed. On to the next one!!

PS - my pic collaging is still a work in progress 😬

Bookzombie I use Pic Collage too. It may help you to set the size of your pic to square or 1:1 before you do anything else. I think I mine does it automatically now. This way it will be sized to what Litsy uses. I hope that helps. 🙂 6mo

“I know. She died on the day I was born,” I say.
“No. No, it‘s impossible,” he says. "Who ARE you?" he demands.
I‘m shaking. Impossible, he said. It‘s impossible that I‘m my parents‘ child. The conviction that this man is right claws at me, firing off the same three words over & over again in a staccato rhythm at the back of my brain. WHO AM I?

Does Laura, the au pair, have the answer to the question that no one would ever answer?

Does she know why Seraphine's mother threw herself off a cliff right after she gave birth?

THE AU PAIR will be enjoyed by readers who enjoy secrets, mysteries, family dynamics, time travel, and descriptions that put you in the book with the characters.

Nothing can top a good old mystery with family secrets, right? 5/5
