Phantoms on the Bookshelves
Phantoms on the Bookshelves | Jacques Bonnet
15 posts | 8 read | 26 to read
This enchanting study on the art of living with books considers how our personal libraries reveal our true nature: far more than just places, they are living labyrinths of our innermost feelings. The author, a lifelong accumulator of books both ancient and modern, lives in a house large enough to accommodate his many thousands of books, as well as overspill from the libraries of his friends. While his musings on the habits of collectors past and present are learned, witty and instructive, his advice on cataloguing may even save the lives of those whose books are so prodigiously piled as to be a hazard. Phantoms on the Bookshelves ranges from classical Greece to contemporary Iceland, from Balzac and Moby Dick to Google, offering up delicious anecdotes along the way. This elegantly produced volume will be a lasting delight to specialist collectors, librarians, bibliophiles and all those who treasure books.

"Mad dogs and Englishmen...", so I've moved my reading table into a shady spot.
I'm feeling guilty about being home and not at work with my clients, reminding myself that I'm "allowed" to be ill, and of the many conversations I've had with others about self-acceptance and self-care, reflecting on how hard that can be to practice for myself, and noticing my inner critic telling me I'm an attention-seeker for even posting this! ?

Graywacke You and your inner critic need to have a heart to heart. (And that resolves anything, I‘ll ask you for advice regarding my own. 🙂) Hope you feel better and are able to enjoy whatever time you have free and feel ok. 2y
TrishB Just put your feet up and relax 😁 self care. 2y
batsy I too know that inner critic too well! And it needs a time out in the corner 🙅🏽‍♀️ Hope you're feeling better! 2y

TheBookHippie I get this. Take a breath. Rest. 2y
Bookwomble @Graywacke We've had a chat! 😊 When I reflect, I find that IC's hurtful comments are more about his insecurities, and that it's him who needs the TLC more than I do. 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB @batsy @AmyG @TheBookHippie Thank you all for your encouragement 💖 2y
Graywacke @Bookwomble 😂 he doesn‘t sound like he‘s in a good place to be helpful. 2y
CarolynM Hope you feel better soon💐 2y
Bookwomble @CarolynM Me, too! My wife got COVID, passed it to me, she's recovered and I'm just lingering with it. Doesn't bear thinking about how I'd feel if I wasn't vaccinated! 2y
Nutmegnc That is a gorgeous spot. Thank you for sharing it! I got it from my spouse about a month ago, too. Hang in there!! 2y
Bookwomble @Nutmegnc Thank you 🌳😊🌿 Sorry to hear you've had the lurgy, too, and glad to hear you've recovered. I think I'm on the mend, just not quite right yet (though that may be a pre-existing problem!) 😊 2y
The_Book_Ninja Hey Wombie…sorry you‘re still poorly😔 2y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Yeah, I'm getting bored of it now! 😄 2y

"Whereas a collector frets obsessively about the books he does not yet possess, the fanatical reader worries about no longer owning those books - traces of his past or hopes for the future - which he has read once and may read again some day."

Looks like I fall into the "fanatical reader" camp, then ??
Bonnet has also given me pause to reflect on the distinction between "bibliophile" and "bibliomaniac" ?

Bookwomble I'm only on page 28 and have already fallen in love with this book, and perhaps with Bonnet himself 💖📚💖 2y

This sounds fun, and has good feels from other Littens.
Bonnet has 40,000 books and crams thoughts on some of them into this little book. Hmmm, maybe he has 40,001 now he's written this 🤔📚📚

This book about books is translated from the French. The (French) author's bookish musings is generally good reading, but of the titles he mentioned I added just one to my TBR list (tagged in comments). I liked his thoughts on art history books and exhibition catalogs. This guy has 40,000 books in his personal library 😱! I'd love to have seen pics of his collection in this volume.

ValerieAndBooks This title apparently also has another English edition, titled The House of Paper. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 4! This one is for all of you book collectors, librarians, and book treasurers out there! This memoir focuses on what to do with what you've got when what you've got seems daunting. & JB would know, he has a large house with thousands of books in it! He looks at the collectors' habits, organizing and cataloging techniques to help you feel less overwhelmed, & he touches on his faves too. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

I have posted many of my shelves before and my library shelves are often in the background of pics, so here is the bookshelf in my dining room which was originally intended for overflow. I am now in need of another shelf for overflow of the overflow. I #blameitonLitsy. #shelfie #funfridayphoto

This reminds me of all the discussions in my library science classes about the future of books and libraries. The Internet is great, but there's something about the visceral feelings that reading a physical book give you that just aren't going to be replaced anytime soon.

BekahB Oh, this is so the truth! I'll find myself gushing about a book and insisting people should read it. When the person I'm trying to convince to read the book asks me what it's about, I usually end up providing a rambling, incoherent description. Then I give up and say something like "I loved it, so just read it" ? 8y
Yournewfriendsam This is spot on! 8y
PatriciaU I often associate my physical experience while reading a book with how I remember the actual story. For example, the Weathertop scene in Fellowship of the Ring will always be one of the most frightening scenes ever for me because I read it while very ill with pneumonia then hallucinated about it for days afterwards. I 8y
