Gathering of Secrets: A Kate Burkholder Novel
Gathering of Secrets: A Kate Burkholder Novel | Linda Castillo
33 posts | 22 read | 18 to read
A deadly fire exposes the dark side of Amish life in A Gathering of Secrets, a harrowing new thriller in the New York Times bestselling series by Linda Castillo. When a historic barn burns to the ground in the middle of the night, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called in to investigate. At first, it looks like an accident, but when the body of eighteen-year-old Daniel Gingerich is found inside--burned alive--Kate suspects murder. Who would want a well-liked, hardworking young Amish man dead? Kate delves into the investigation only to find herself stonewalled by the community to which she once belonged. Is their silence a result of the Amish tenet of separation? Or is this peaceful and deeply religious community conspiring to hide a truth no one wants to talk about? Kate doubles down only to discover a plethora of secrets and a chilling series of crimes that shatters everything she thought she knew about her Amish roots--and herself. As Kate wades through a sea of suspects, she's confronted by her own violent past and an unthinkable possibility.

Chief Kate is called to investigate a murder by arson of a young Amish man. She slowly comes to understand some very disturbing truths about the victim. Apparently this is book 10 of a series, but I didn‘t feel I‘d missed anything jumping in at this point. I really liked this and will certainly look for more books by this author.

The story begins with a murder of a young Amish teenager. Kate begins investigating and finds many suspects. She realizes that the victim was not what everyone thought. He was a sexual predator. Highly recommend.

It was an easy read with dark undertones in what seems to be a simple culture (Amish). The simplicity of their culture is tenured with secrets and sadly violence—some by choice and others as a vigilante; which brings the ultimate@question: is crime justified when the world is seemingly better off?

This is fast paced read with lots of character involvement. I‘m half way through and not knowing much about the Amish community, I immaturely just assumed they had no crime.

The latest book in the Kate Burkholder series is another solid entry. There is a murder in Amish country, and everything is not quite what it seems at the beginning. The author moves the story along and keeps the reader engaged. Since I live a few miles away from where the series takes place, I enjoy seeing so many familiar references.

tammysue This is the first I‘ve read it the series and absolutely loved it 🧡 1y

I‘ve read them all (this is #10) – I used to love them – but they‘re starting to sound more and more alike. Similar phrasing, similar reflections, similar characters. Maybe I should read the next one with my eyes and not listen with my ears? I‘ll keep reading them because I love the setting and enjoy the main characters, but…

The prologue begins with an Amish girl committing suicide. 6 Mos later Chief of Police Kate investigates the arson death of a well-loved young Amish man on Rumspringa. Someone deliberately set the fire + Kate finds he‘s not as upstanding as everyone says him to be. The Amish keep their dark secrets hid until violence erupts jeopardizing Kate‘s life + her own violent past resurfaces. A 5 ☆ thriller full of mystery + twists. Highly recommend!

Overall, an enjoyable read. I really like Chief Kate Burkholder and her relationships with her staff, especially how she mentors her dispatcher, Mona. This mystery was slightly off for me though, maybe I predicted the ending too soon or how the pieces were almost forced together in some parts. Still, she'll remain on my must read list.

Castillo writes tightly constructed, gritty novels -- set in Amish country. I enjoy this series and always set down whatever else I am reading when a new one comes out.

Castillo writes a story that grabs a hold of you from start to finish, she‘s great author who you should be reading. She takes you into the world of the Amish with wonderfully written characters. She makes you feel like you‘re transported right into Painters Mill, Ohio. I received an ARC from Minotaur Books

I had the pleasure of going to watch Linda Castillo give a talk at my local library. She is wonderful to see if you get the opportunity while she is touring for her new book. I really enjoy her Kate Burkholder novels, and there is the added bonus of the books being set so close to where I live. Linda said I am the 2nd person to have recently told her about Litsy, so she may check us out.

tammysue That would be wonderful! 1y

Just a note from author Linda Castillo. Every time she has a new book coming out, she sends a letter and some bookmarks. I emailed her after her very first book. They are set about 30 minutes from here, so I wrote to ask if she‘s from the area. ( she‘s not, a good friend is). She‘s very loyal to her fans. Her Amish mysteries wouldn‘t be called Cozy....let‘s just say that. Interesting characters and good writing.

Jennick2004 Ooh I will have to check her out!!! Love Amish mysteries 💜 1y
Kaye Yes her series has a female detective/ police chief in a small Amish community. Actually quite good. Hope you like them. @jennick2004 1y
JoScho I have read one of her books. 1y

kamoorephoto I just got her book sent to me too 👏👏👏 1y
Kaye @kamoorephoto. I never get the books, just the bookmarks but it‘s ok by me. It‘s fun just getting them. Her books are easy to get at our libraries here since they‘re all set in our area. They always have copies of them. 1y
Redy2trvl I read this ARC a week or two ago. It was my first read in the series, and I was pleased that the story totally stood alone. I genuinely enjoyed the mystery, and plan to go back and read others in the series. 1y
Kaye @redy2trvl I‘m glad you liked it. I‘m not a huge mystery fan, but hers are pretty good. I like the characters and subject matter. Believe it or not, the sheriff gets lots of calls to the Amish places. They are human like the rest of us and get themselves into trouble just like we do. 1y
Pamwurtzler How nice! I love promotional bookmarks. I‘ll have to check those out too. 1y
Kaye Hope you like them Pam. They‘re quite different than you‘d think when you hear Amish mystery. Not like someone stole Anna Yoder‘s quilt off the laundry line. More like Anna is missing and ends up dead. The first story starts off with a humdinger of a case @Pamwurtzler (edited) 1y

10th Kate Burkholder book in Linda Castillo‘s Amish series. I have read them all and each one is a page-turner. The characters are well-developed and the plots are always intriguing. The circumstances of a death by fire in a barn of a young Amish man brings up the hurtful past of Chief Kate Burkholder. This series should be read in order. If you haven‘t started this series, you should, as they do not disappoint! Thanks to netgalley for an ARC.

It‘s hard to believe that this is the tenth installment of the Kate Burkholder series! It‘s more intricately plotted than some of the earlier books, and it‘s quite satisfying when the strands of the plot #ComeTogether! Kaye You guys should email this author. She is SO nice. I emailed her after her first book came out because her book takes place about 30 minutes from here. I thought she lived nearby, but one of her friends does. Anyhow, every new book that comes out, she mails me a letter and hand full of bookmarks. She appreciates her fans. 1y
angel1 @Kaye thank you for sharing that with us. I will definitely have to do that! Can her book be a stand alone or do I need to read the series? I hate being lost in a book and not knowing the characters. 1y
Kaye Well, I‘ve frankly lost track so I‘m not sure if every book follows the same main character or if she has different ones. Just being me, I‘d start with #1 and read from there if all of them are in a series, just in case they‘re talking about something that previously happened. 1y
