Red Queen
Red Queen | Victoria Aveyard
This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.Fearful of Mare's potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart . . .

This was one of those books where you stay up later then you‘d like to to finish it. For a short time in the early middle, I thought it was pretty boring. But then, the plot picked up and I couldn‘t put it down. 5⭐️

persephone1408 I had a hard time putting all of them down...but I had an audio book with the 3rd one so I listened literally ALL THE TIME! By the last one I read non stop until I finished lol 3mo

I don‘t know if the twists in Red Queen or American Gods counts as jaw dropping, but both had a plot twist. (Although in the case of Red Queen, the title might give it away.) but these are the two I thought of as I don‘t read thrillers where you get the OMG! kind of plot twists.

MidnightBookGirl These definitely count! Although Red Queen still sits upon my TBR piles. Love that cover of American Gods! 3mo

I think I enjoyed this way more than I initially thought I would. It got off to a bit of a rough/slow start but by the midway point I was hooked. I did see some of the plot twists coming but that didn't take away from my overall enjoyment. This book reminded me a lot of Red Rising at times which could be why I enjoyed it so much. I was a fun read and I need to get my hands on book two as soon as possible

Book32 | ⭐️2.5/5
I said from the beginning that I knew I wasn‘t going to love this book. If it wasn‘t an audiobook that I listened to while doing mindless tasks, I probably wouldn‘t have finished it at all. The sequel is waiting for me but I have no desire to see where this story leads right now. Maybe if I don‘t find another audiobook I‘ll try it out.

KathyWheeler I read this one and thought it was okay, but I have no desire to read the rest of them. 4mo

About 2 hours in & I‘m still not sure I‘m going to finish it but I‘ll keep going for now. Since I mostly listen to my audiobooks while driving, sometimes having a book I don‘t need to pay all that much attention to is nice 😅

My biggest issue with this book is the main character. She‘s a cliche trope of the overly independent girl that‘s not stereotypically feminine. I get those characters are supposed to be “empowering” but I find it limiting.

Started RED QUEEN as my new commute audiobook. So far it feels like another stereotypical YA novel of your “average” girl finding out she‘s actually special and ends up in a weird love… pyramid. This might be. DNF for me but I‘ll give it another hour before deciding.

What YA trope are you entirely over seeing?

GondorGirl Love triangles. 🤢 4mo
Oryx This was the book that finished me for YA 🙂! I read about a fifth, then nope, I've read this all before. 4mo
CollapsingLibrary @GondorGirl yes!! I need like a major twist on the love triangle before I want to see it again. I have no idea what that would look like though 😅😅 4mo
CollapsingLibrary @Oryx ugh that‘s how I feel this is going to go for me 😣 which I hate because I think YA is such an important part of people‘s literary journey! 4mo

persephone1408 For some reason as I read this 2nd book...in my mind kilorn is Murphy from the 100. Farley is nina zinek from six of crows (shadow and bone) AND Maven is joffrey from game of thrones.🤷🏻🤷🏻 4mo

Usually it‘s difficult for me to pick up a new book with a plot I‘ve yet to dive into, but this book, with the characters and their relationships with one another, really took me for a spin. I‘ve come to find that the books with the biggest plot twists are the ones that I can‘t seem to put down!

Finished this today and it wasn‘t my favorite. I picked it up as a similar book to the the Three Dark Crowns series, but it didn‘t quite fit the bill. This one felt predictable in some ways and forced in others. I kept looking at the page numbers to see how far along I was and when I‘d be done. I don‘t plan to continue the series. 3⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The writing style wasn‘t my favorite but once the plot picked up after a few chapters I was hooked.
I found the concept of the Red/Silver divide interesting and appreciated the plot twist at the end. Definitely kept me on my toes the last few chapters.
Looking forward to the rest of the series.

I didn‘t think I was the type to read romance, or those cliché princess books, but this book opened a door for me. It leaves you on the edge of your seat and always reading “just one more” chapter.

Red Queen just wasn‘t for me. At first it seemed like an interesting book but I was just too slow and it wasn‘t keeping me hooked. There were interesting hooking events that took place in the book but they just weren‘t what I was into and I couldn‘t keep reading.

I've discovered a new author. The first in a series, it's a YA dystopian revolutionary story with compelling characters and imagination throughout. In a world where Silvers rule, crushing the spirits of the Reds, Mare Barrow, a Red accidentally finds she is more than just a Red. Held captive by Silvers she is a pawn used to keep her kind in check, but her alliances & the discovery of who she really is, leads her to spark a revolution.

Day 7
A well crafted YA high Fantasy Dystopian series. Romance, betrayal & superpowers galore with some overused plot lines. Really loved the 1st but the series ended up falling short for me around the 3rd. Received the dust jacket damaged so I ended up putting a rose & some baby‘s breath inside.

MsMelissa I 💯 % agree with you. I ended up bailing in the middle of the last book. I just didn‘t care anymore! 13mo
ReaperOfTerrasen Agreed also. I loved the first one, but as the series went on, it felt to me like the main character became less and less important. I do like when a series grows into something big, but the main character should grow with it, but to me it felt like the main character got left behind. 13mo
CloakNQuill @ReaperOfTerrasen @Book_Fiend_Melissa I had such high hopes for Mare! I completely agree she should have progressed alongside the worldly plot. My biggest book pet peeve for myself is not seeing series to the end, but I can‘t continue this one. 13mo

I felt it was a good choice to read this as an audio book. It worked really well in that form! I highly recommend this if you are in need of light YA dystopian fantasy. One bad side in this book was that it reminded me a lot of Hunger games. For example character dynamics and the world were really close to that of Hunger games stories. Still I'm going to give it a "Pick" because I'm feeling this book right now. ?

Starting my reread of this series in hopes of actually reading War Storm and Broken Throne. I always forget how much I love this series, and especially book one. I know there are lots of mixed feeing about the books as a whole, but I find them so fun!

ReaperOfTerrasen Um...hmmm... well.... nope, nothing, never mind. This series, I loved it in the first book. Have you already read the entire series or just first few? 1y
cleoh @ReaperOfTerrasen I‘ve read the first three! The tone of the series definitely shifted after the first book. 1y
ReaperOfTerrasen I‘ll have to wait until you finish it, but from the first book this series was slated to be one of my favorites, since finishing it... I‘m afraid I barely acknowledge its existence on my shelves. Can‘t say why until you read War Storm. Although I haven‘t read Broken Throne yet, since it takes place after War Storm, maybe it‘ll change my mind. 1y
