Exit Strategy
Exit Strategy: The Murderbot Diaries | Martha Wells
"I love Murderbot!" —Ann Leckie The fourth and final part of the Murderbot Diaries series that began with All Systems Red. Murderbot wasn’t programmed to care. So, its decision to help the only human who ever showed it respect must be a system glitch, right? Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah—its former owner (protector? friend?)—submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit. But who’s going to believe a SecUnit gone rogue? And what will become of it when it’s caught? At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

#Day5 I walked on my morning break and then again when I got home. Total time is recorded above. Still working on my second audio book Exit Strategy. Five days down and 37 left to go. I am hoping by the time the challenge ends the exercising will be a habit and I will keep going. 🤞

wanderinglynn Way to go! And don‘t worry, I already have plans to continue #BFC. More details on #BFC part 2 will be coming around week 5. 1w

#Day4

I was busy with family stuff Sunday and didn't get a walk in so I did a little extra today. This is a combination of walking on my morning and afternoon breaks at work. Then a brisk walk with my dogs after work. I think I am going to break down and get a fitness tracker to record steps and distance. I completed A Conjuring of Light and started on Exit Strategy

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 1w
BarbaraJean I‘ve been using my phone to track steps & distance because I‘m too cheap to buy a tracker! 😆 (edited) 1w
TheSpineView @BarbaraJean I tried that and didn't like it because my phone is too big to carry comfortably. 1w
See All 13 Comments
BarbaraJean Yeah, I have a tiny iPhone, so that helps. But I still leave it lying around instead of always on me, so I feel like I‘m not getting “credit” for all my steps! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
Ash.on.the.line Great job! 1w
BookwormAHN Nice job 👏🏻 1w
Caterina Good job finding ways to get some walks in!! I recently took advantage of the Fitbit mother's day sale (even though I'm not a mom 😂) and got the fitbit inspire HR, and it has definitely been inspiring me, so I think it's working! 1w
TheSpineView @Caterina I'm not sure if I want to commit to the cost of a Fitbit. Wondering if I would use all the features when mainly I just want a pedometer. Also I think of how many books I could buy for the cost of one. 1w
TheSpineView @Ash.on.the.line @BookwormAHN Thanks! 1w

Book 4. I love these novellas more and more as the Murderbot Diaries series goes on, perhaps because they form a larger narrative arc. And Murderbot is such a great character: a genderless AI security unit gone rogue, who prefers to be left alone to watch tv dramas, but can‘t help being drawn into situations where humans require help. Kevin R Free narrates the addictive first-person-voice #audiobooks.

gradcat I rarely find myself very interested in sci-fi and all things AI...but this sounds really interesting. Stacked 📚 1mo

julesG It's lovely. Is it your own design? 1mo
Lindy @julesG I found the pattern online when I was searching for a lace design easy enough to do without too much concentration while travelling. https://www.allfreeknitting.com/Knit-Shawls/Ocean-Waves-Shawl-Red-Heart 1mo
Lindy @Annl I don‘t have a Ravelry account, but I have browsed for patterns there. 1mo
Lindy @julesG Also, I wanted a pattern that would show off the yarn, which had been a gift to me. 1mo
julesG Thank you! BTW, I like Melanie Berg's/Mairlynd's designs. They are easy to follow, have a short pattern repeat and look gorgeous. (Just in case you need another project soon.) 1mo
julesG It's sometimes hard to find a pattern that lets the yarn do the talking/be in the spotlight. (see Mairlynd's patterns, they often are about showing off the yarn rather than complicated lace.) 1mo
Lindy @julesG Thanks for the tip. I had a look at her shawls online and I see what you mean. I picked up a cone of lace weight alpaca/linen blend when I was in Tokyo and now am looking for a shawl pattern. But first I need to get back to the qiviuk/cashmere undervest that‘s in progress. 1mo
julesG Very organised! Knitting projects, to me, are like books, the more I start the merrier. 😵😵😵 1mo
Lindy @julesG I‘m doing my very best now to be disciplined about projects… which is not how I was in the past. I enjoy starting projects so much more than finishing them. 1mo

I feel a little better finishing this book knowing Wells is working on a full novel. Murderbot is such a great character. This final novella brings his story full circle. Even as he is becoming somewhat comfortable existing along humans, he never loses that special, antisocial anxious something that makes him unique.

BookishMeanderings I've heard great things about these books. Really want to read them 2mo
TieDyeDude @BookishMeanderings I can't recommend them enough! Murderbot is destined to become a classic sci-fi character. Such a well developed personality and Wells demonstrates great consistency through the four novellas. 2mo

What can I say? It was an excellent wrap-up to an excellent series. I‘m seriously going to miss Murderbot and how fricking alike we are. They are truly amazing.

If you haven‘t read the series and you enjoy AI narratives, especially when the AI is a severely socially awkward and sarcastic badass, then give this series a go. The first book is All Systems Red.

The conclusion to the Murderbot diaries, sees everything wrapped up neatly and concluded very satisfactorily. It was fast, action filled as usual and full of the emotional wit and awkwardness that marks these books as really unique and refreshing.

One of my #bookishresolutions2019 is to finish series I started in 2018. And I finished my first series of the year! I might have cheated a little and chosen the series of novellas and not chunksters, but it‘s important to feel successful at the start of a new goal, right? 🤣

All the loose ends pull together in this tense installment that wraps up the story arc started in “All Systems Red”... will GrayCris be held accountable, will Murderbot find a permanent home, can the company be trusted to uphold its agreements, it‘s all up in the air until the last page as Murderbot faces challenges that test even her ever evolving skills.

I used to love Murderbot. Exit Strategy just didn't work for me. The plot seemed simpler and more thin than those in the prior three installments and it didn't hold my interest until the last quarter or so when the Murderbot reunites with friends from a past mission. Frankly, I was bored during a large part of this book and was close to checking out all together. But I'm a completist and I trudged on as is my nature. The ending was satisfying.

More than any of the previous books, this functions less as a stand-alone story and more as a part of the overarching narrative. Still it's a thrilling and satisfying conclusion, and you'll likely breeze through the rest of the series fast enough that the pacing will work for you. Sure hope this isn't the last we've seen of these characters.

Great finish (kind of) to the series. It finishes the story line but it leaves open possible new adventures. I am not sure how I feel about that 🤔. The story sagged a bit for me in the third book, but the fourth book really brought it home

I absolutely loved this quartet of novellas. Murderbot is definitely someone I'd spend time with even if it didn't really want to!

The story makes you think about the definition of intelligence. It's a fun read with interesting social commentary.

My only complaint is that this could have been a book rather than 4 quick installments. At $10 a pop that makes for a $40 novel... I library-ed these.

Martha Wells ties it all together in this latest chapter of The Murderbot Diaries. Murderbot confronts his past and takes in his corporate nemesis in this fast paced, exciting and surprisingly emotional chapter. I devoured this audiobook in one gulp, and it kept me engaged to the very end. Wells places an unique spin on Murderbot who seeks to be an individual but not necessarily human. Narrator Kevin R. Free gives a fully realized performance.

The conclusion of the Murderbot diaries was alright. I like these books but don‘t love them. It‘s the writing. The author is prolific but not poetic.
