Read and Gone: A Haunted Library Mystery | Allison Brook
17 posts | 16 read | 14 to read
Right in time for the holidays, comes Allison Brook's second Haunted Library mystery, a perfect present for readers of Jenn McKinlay and Leslie Meier. Twenty million dollars' worth of missing gems bring Carrie Singleton's long-lost and larcenous dad back into her life and it's up to Carrie to clear his name. A devoted dad is as precious as diamonds, but Carrie Singleton wouldn't know since her dad Jim's been on the lam most of her life. In an unusual family reunion, she finds Jim breaking into her cottage in the middle of the night. The fun really starts when he begs her to help him recover his half of a twenty-million-dollar gem heist he pulled off with the local jeweler, Benton Parr. When she refuses, Jim takes off again. Carrie finds her father again behind bars for the recent murder of Benton Parr. Who made the connection? Unbeknownst to her, Carrie's boyfriend Dylan, an insurance investigator, has been searching for the gems. Determined to find the jewels herself, she starts examining every facet of Parr's life. She turns up a treasure trove of suspects, one of whom bashes her on the head as she's searching the victim's country cabin. Retreating to the quiet confines of the library where she works, Carrie watches as Smokey Joe, the resident cat, paws at a hole in the wall. Is he after the library's ghost Evelyn, or something shinier? The second charming Haunted Library mystery by Allison Brook,Read and Gone will be a delight for fans of Jenn McKinlay and Leslie Meier.

I was not a fan of book 1 in the series - mainly because I did not really like Carrie the MC - and things did not improve for me. Carrie has to be one of the whiniest MC‘s I‘ve ever read. At about halfway through the book, I‘m calling it quits. The other members of my cozy mystery book discussion group did not agree with me, so my feelings are not what other readers may feel! Life‘s too short to read books I‘m not invested in…

Mehso-so

Remember the scene in Moonstruck where Cher slapped Nick Cage and says "Snap Out of It!"? That's what I wanted to do to Carrie, the main character, because of her annoying overreaction to her boyfriend investigating her criminal father. I get she felt betrayed and used, but it was ridiculous how schizophrenic she was about her dad, one minute his staunchest defender, the next lamenting how much he's ruined her life. Continued in the comments ⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 If it wasn't for the interesting mystery, I would have bailed on the book because of the overwrought melodrama. Also, why is this called the Haunted Library Series? Yes there's a ghost but she played almost no part in this story. I don't know if I'll continue the series. 3 ⭐⭐⭐ 2y
keys_on_fire When I saw the cover, I thought “Oooo”, but I think I would be annoyed if there is that much waffling by the MC. Thanks for the heads up! 2y
BookmarkTavern Yeah, I‘d definitely be put off by that MC too! 2y
Reggie I‘m imagining the couple fighting and just in passing the author writes, little did they know there was a ghost listening the whole time. And that‘s all you hear about it. Lolol 2y

I glanced around my cottage at the thirty or so guests laughing and chatting, and grinned.

Surprisingly, not as good as book 1. I got kind of fed up with Carrie getting mad at her new boyfriend for legitimately investigating her crooked dad, even if her Pops is kind of charming. There were lots of deaths, and I enjoyed it, so I will continue and hope book 3 hooks me back in. #WinterGames2020 #MerryReaders #HolidayRead @Clwojick

Carrie is busy planning holiday activities at the library when her long-lost larcenous dad pops back into her life. He‘s on the hunt for jewels, but he‘s not the only one. +566 #WinterGames2020 #MerryReaders #FestiveFlicks (Bingo!) #Travelathon #ChristmasSpiritReadathon #LittenListen

I read the 1st book in this series during Scarathlon and this one is just as good. Set at Christmas, Carrie is determined to find stolen gems and solve murders to prove her long absent father is not a killer only a thief. I like this series and will continue to read it.

Who is this narrator who sides with her estranged criminal father over her own friends and family? Who gets upset that her cat might catch a mouse? She‘s so dumb it‘s ruining the rest of the (actually interesting) story for me.

Am I supposed to sympathize with this woman? That‘s a laugh.

I received this ARC from Netgalley. This is the second book in the series, I have enjoyed them both. Librarian+Haunted Library+library cat= a great cozy. Carrie is just settling in to her new life in this small town when her sketchy father shows up. He is after his partner in a gem heist that took off with the loot! Of course then a body shows up, her dad is arrested and Carrie finds herself in a mystery. All during Christmas!!🎄

Book two in the Haunted Library Mystery series. I hadn't read the first one, but it didn't really matter other than a spoiler or two if I ever go back and read that one. This was a fun little cozy. A bit predictable, like most cozies, and the main character makes some terrible decisions...like most cozies. Could've done with more of the library ghost, but overall I enjoyed it.

#NetGalley

CaitlinR I‘ve never read the cozies. Probably should. 6y

I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Lovely Christmas story, very warm and family oriented, with a mystery - detective side of it!
I couldn't connect to Carrie for some reason - she always made choices that made me cringe.

I loved the detective part and the mystery and tense moments around it, and I wish I read the first book first.

Traci1 I'm about halfway through this one. I didn't read the first book in the series either, and I do think that would've helped, especially because there are so many minor characters. 6y
diaryofdifference @Traci1 Yes, I completely agree. You can still follow the story, but there are some comments that would make sense if you read the first one before. 6y

Dragging a toddler with no concept of personal space to various appointments makes for an exhausting day and a few meltdowns (mostly his). My sweet husband offered to do evening duty so I could relax in bed and read, so I'm going to start this #netgalley cozy that I should have gotten to a month or so ago.

Suet624 Relax and enjoy! 6y

What are you reading at the moment? ❤️🌼🍀

sudi Started reading catcher in the rye for the #GARbingo challenge 6y
Louise The Rabbit Back Literature Society, The Gifts of Imperfection, and a couple of books on poetic form. 6y
diaryofdifference @sudi That's quite interesting. I saw a few different pictures with different titles though, how and where do you choose from? Can you explain more about how it works? I'd love to do that ❤️😊 6y

Elizabeth2 I am reading “A Court of Wings & Ruin,” the third book in the Court of Thorn & Roses series. Welcome to Litsy! 6y
diaryofdifference @Elizabeth2 That books seems quite intriguing! 😊❤️ 6y
Louise Honestly, I wouldn't necessarily recommend Rabbit Back. The concept is interesting, but it's not as engaging as I had hoped. I do, however, recommend The Gifts of Imperfection, a non-fiction book by Brené Brown. It's practical and liberating for readers who have a tendency to be too hard on themselves. 6y
Cortg I‘m keeping up with The Thorn Birds for a read-a-long and starting the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo today! I‘m also listening to Educated and still trekking through Les Mis the Serial Reader app. (edited) 6y
Cortg @sudi I just finished The Catcher in the Rye on Saturday! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I‘m reading Red Sky in Morning and really liking it so far 6y
