Lone Wolf
Lone Wolf: A Novel | Jodi Picoult
A life hanging in the balance . . . a family torn apart. The #1 internationally bestselling author Jodi Picoult tells an unforgettable story about family secrets, love, and letting go. In the wild, when a wolf knows its time is over, when it knows it is of no more use to its pack, it may sometimes choose to slip away. Dying apart from its family, it stays proud and true to its nature. Humans arent so lucky. Luke Warren has spent his life researching wolves. He has written about them, studied their habits intensively, and even lived with them for extended periods of time. In many ways, Luke understands wolf dynamics better than those of his own family. His wife, Georgie, has left him, finally giving up on their lonely marriage. His son, Edward, twenty-four, fled six years ago, leaving behind a shattered relationship with his father. Edward understands that some things cannot be fixed, though memories of his domineering father still inflict pain. Then comes a frantic phone call: Luke has been gravely injured in a car accident with Edwards younger sister, Cara. Suddenly everything changes: Edward must return home to face the father he walked out on at age eighteen. He and Cara have to decide their fathers fate together. Though theres no easy answer, questions abound: What secrets have Edward and his sister kept from each other? What hidden motives inform their need to let their father die . . . or to try to keep him alive? What would Luke himself want? How can any family member make such a decision in the face of guilt, pain, or both? And most importantly, to what extent have they all forgotten what a wolf never forgets: that each member of a pack needs the others, and that sometimes survival means sacrifice? Another tour de force by Picoult, Lone Wolf brilliantly describes the nature of a family: the love, protection, and strength it can offerand the price we might have to pay for those gifts. What happens when the hope that should sustain a family is the very thing tearing it apart?

Straddling the pick and so-so on this one. I always love the controversial subject matter that Picoult writes about, but I felt that this one missed the mark on engaging the reader emotionally, esp. considering the subject matter (life support). I think this was primarily because the characters, pretty much all of them, were not very likable. But I did learn a lot about wolves and wolf behavior!

This was the library bookclub pick for March. I read it in two days. Frankly none of the characters were likable. Cara (17 yo daughter) was a giant spoiled brat. There was even one point where it seemed the story derailed a moment. If I‘m generous maybe two stars. #picoult #lonewolf #unlikable

ItsAnotherJen I usually love anything by Picoult, so I went and looked what I rated this on Goodreads. I usually give her books 4-5 stars. Only gave this one 3 stars. 🤷‍♀️ 5y
jb72 @JenFowler I felt like part of the story was stretched thin. Luke was such an unlikable guy. 5y

I loved this Jodi Piccoult novel (still haven't come across one I didn't like)! It was certainly a page turner, and I found myself thinking about the plot constantly during my non-reading moments. Definitely recommend this one!

This book is for anyone who has felt a call to the wild. I thought this book was going to be a 5 star book, but ended with a 4 star. I couldn't get over one of the characters. Plus, it was one of those books where you wanted to just yell "spit it out!" I really enjoyed pretty much everything else. This is my first book of hers. I loved the writing and will be looking to her other books because of it. Recommended!

LiteraryinLawrence I have had mixed feelings about her books over the years, but my favorite of hers is 7y

This is the second of Picoult's that I've read. The first was My Sister's Keeper & I loved it. I thought it was complex & devastating, somber & amusing in all the right places. Reading Lone Wolf, which I was STOKED to read, I felt like I could see every twist coming. What seemed clever and surprising about MSK now just feels like a formula the author uses for possibly all her stories and I am not inclined to pursue any of her other ventures.

I am simply not a fan of this novel. I was never invested in this story or these characters! Animals are not her strength. Court rooms are.
