Windy City Blues | Renaee Rosen
26 posts | 9 read | 18 to read
-The rise of the Chicago Blues scene fairly shimmers with verve and intensity, and the large, diverse cast of characters is indelibly portrayed with the perfect pitch of a true artist.---Melanie Benjamin, New York Times bestselling author of The Swans of Fifth Avenue The bestselling author of White Collar Girl and What the Lady Wants explores one woman's journey of self-discovery and love set against the backdrop of a musical and social revolution. Leeba Groski doesn't exactly fit in, but her love of music is not lost on her childhood friend and neighbor, Leonard Chess, who offers her a job at his new record company in the heart of Chicago. What starts as answering phones and filing becomes more than Leeba ever dreamed of, as she comes into her own as a songwriter and her path crosses with legendary performers like Muddy Waters and Etta James. But it's Red Dupree, a black blues guitarist from Louisiana, who captures her heart, and urges her to explore her talent and who she really is. With their relationship unwelcome in segregated 1950s Chicago and the two of them shunned by Leeba's Orthodox Jewish family, Leeba and Red soon find themselves in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement and they discover that, in times of struggle, music can bring people together. I took the #Hear/Here #Booked2021 prompt literally and listened to this fictionalized account of Chess Records and blues music in Chicago, my hometown. Famous musicians are woven into the story of Red Dupree and Leeba Groski as they face racism, discrimination and join in the civil rights movement. It was a fascinating look at the time. The narrator, Robin Miles, was excellent.

TW for racial slurs and profanity.

alisiakae Great review! And my father in law would probably love this book! He‘s written a few books about early R&B artists 3y

Loving this book! The historical detail, the characters (real and imagined), and Chicago itself--wow. Rosen doesn't sugarcoat a thing, and yet her characters are all likable, especially Leah and Red. I'm reading it when I should be reading other things...

PedanticPastorMartha Highly recommended! The historical figures seem fictional, but yes, that's really how it happened--Rosen did collapse a few timelines and characters, but otherwise the events are real. A couple of fictional characters anchor the plot--and I love Leeba and Red! An amazing story that weaves together the history of Chicago, the blues, jazz, the recording industry, civil rights, and rock and roll. Outstanding! I am off to find Rosen's other novels... 6y

#TBRtemptation post 7! In the mid-20th Century, Leeba works at Chess Records, where Chicago blues was shaped. She has her job because of her passion for music & talented piano playing. She'll come into her own as a songwriter & befriend Middy Waters, Etta James, Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry. She'll love a black blues guitarist during that segregated time. Shunned by church & family, they'll be in the Civil Rights movement. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

CocoReads This is on my tbr! I really need to get to it as Renee Rosen Facebook friended me months ago. It has all the things I love in it so I‘m not sure why I haven‘t gotten to it yet. Chicago, music, the blues, relationships. 6y

#minibookhaul went to the bookstore with my bestie yesterday for some retail therapy and these were what I came home with. I'm most excited about Windy City Blues because it takes place in 50s and 60s Chicago and combines the blues, segregation and romance. Sounds like a winner to me. Mating for Life was on the remainder table and sounded good for a $5 read

Whether it be the fictional Leah Gold and Red Dupree or the nonfictional Leonard and Phil Chess, the right to people at the right time can indeed change the world. A wonderful novel with an interwoven playlist. In today's sea of apathy, fear and pessimism it's important to recognize the human race has been through many trials and triumphed. We have, we can, and we will. That's simply what we do. Rosen' best work yet.

#2017Book3
As a music fan, I loved this fictionalized account the true story of two brothers who immigrated from Poland, bought a recording studio, and became some of the first people to help African American musicians get their music played on the radio. The story is expertly crafted, focusing on the music of the time and the characters' connections to the Civil Rights Movement. If you're a music lover, I highly recommend this novel.

Settling in with this for the rest of the afternoon/evening. I've got soooo very many e-galleys to read, I should never have to buy a single book in 2017 between those and my copious TBR piles (kidding, kidding!)

ReadingEnvy I sometimes feel stuck by the pressing deadlines of expiring egalleys but right now have a brief lull. I've been exploring a few with "no expiration" to make sure I get to them! 7y
bookishkai @ReadingEnvy I'm a terrible netgalley user; I mostly get galleys off the read now list, so I feel like there's a little less pressure that way. And I admit, I haven't read most of the ones I've gotten off first to read. You're right, too much pressure, but I really do want to read this one. 7y

I found the historical story fascinating & Rosen has given me a new appreciation of the ties between Blues, R&B, Rock & Roll, & the Civil Rights struggle. In this time of racial tension, I found the lessons of this history very moving. Additionally, the fictional lines of the story blended very well into the history; Leeba & Red's story brought tears & smiles to my heart. If you like music & historical fiction, this will be a great read for you!
