Viet Thanh Nguyen's The Sympathizer was one of the most widely and highly praised novels of 2015, the winner not only of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, but also the Center for Fiction Debut Novel Prize, the Edgar Award for Best First Novel, the ALA Carnegie Medal for Fiction, the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature, and the California Book Award for First Fiction. Nguyen's next fiction book, The Refugees, is a collection of perfectly formed stories written over a period of twenty years, exploring questions of immigration, identity, love, and family. With the coruscating gaze that informed The Sympathizer, in The Refugees Viet Thanh Nguyen gives voice to lives led between two worlds, the adopted homeland and the country of birth. From a young Vietnamese refugee who suffers profound culture shock when he comes to live with two gay men in San Francisco, to a woman whose husband is suffering from dementia and starts to confuse her for a former lover, to a girl living in Ho Chi Minh City whose older half-sister comes back from America having seemingly accomplished everything she never will, the stories are a captivating testament to the dreams and hardships of immigration. The second piece of fiction by a major new voice in American letters, The Refugees is a beautifully written and sharply observed book about the aspirations of those who leave one country for another, and the relationships and desires for self-fulfillment that define our lives.

Reading this essay led me to the film “After Life” by Hirokazu Kore-eda , which was awesome. I love it when that happens! Anyone else ever see it? http://nyer.cm/H9Q5bJb

This collection explores immigration, family, love and identity while straddling 2 worlds-the homeland and the adopted homeland. The stories explore the hardships of immigration, the aspirations and dreams of those that immigrate and the relationships and desires that define us all. Filled with figurative and literal ghosts of the past, each story stands alone yet is tied to the others thematically and through the strength of the writing.

A wonderful collection of short stories, and an added bonus of 2 fabulous essays at the end. I haven't read a refugee-centered story in a long time, and I'm very thankful to #Booked2018 for pointing me in this direction! And yes, I finished this on the plane. ✈️

My final category this season! ❤️

A wonderful collection of short stories about Vietnamese refugees. Whether they live in the US or are returning to Vietnam, all stories teach us about how it is to leave your country and start all over again somewhere else. How you want to forget where you came from or want to cherish its culture and traditions. The stories seem so light, but they are full of meaning and left me gasping again and again.

Flaneurette I listened to this on audio, read by the author, and really enjoyed it. I don‘t generally even like audiobooks but this one worked for me. I still think about many of the stories months later and my memory is crap anymore! Especially loved the ghost brother 1y
BarbaraBB @Flaneurette Told by the author must have been so special! The ghost story was very good indeed. Another favorite of mine was the one about dementia 💔 1y

I don't always enjoy short story collections, but this was so incredibly written. The style of writing carries you through and it's easy to get lost in the histories that are told. The characters are engaging and you can't help but connect with them.

I must admit I have always had a deep love for short stories. So I can give this one a so-so even though maybe not every story was out of this world. There was a particular story that has still stuck with me. Have you read this? And if so is there a specific story that sticks out to you? Cheers to another #bookandbeer post!

Nikki15 I have read this but I found it a little lacking. I‘m not a massive fan of short stories anyway as I never find I have enough time to connect to the characters. But I found that each story had the potential to be great and really resonate with me but they just weren‘t long enough!! Maybe I‘d appreciate it more if I read it again. 2y
Shafile This was on my list because I loved his other novel "The Sympathizer". But I hadn't realized this was a short story collection. May still look through it at some point. Thanks for brining it back to my attention! 2y

I was looking up books for #booked2018 prompt #refugeeMC (main character) and found quite a few new-to-me ones. One book I have read and would highly recommend is The Song Poet by Kao Kalia Yang, which is a memoir about a Hmong family

I‘m not quite sure how I felt about this book. It‘s comprised of short stories in which immigration and identity is a key theme. Now I don‘t typically read short stories because I like to get to know characters before I feel a connection to them and their story. I couldn‘t do that with this book. I think Nguyen highlights the complexities of life as a refugee incredibly well and does it with through POVs. It might do better with a re-read.

Nikki15 Beautiful cover though 💜 2y

Overall the collection was a little mixed for me, but the two essays at the end of the collection, especially the above title, tip this into a pick for me. The author's discussion of refugees & immigrants is a must-read.

I wanted to enjoy this 😣 I found it hard to follow on audio. The style is so wordy & full of descriptions and yet by the end of each chapter/story I felt zero resolution. Halfway through I almost bailed I was so tired of not having enough focus on almost-great characters, if only they had the chance to properly delve into past or future actions rather than receiving over-the-too details of the color/texture of their clothing, the weather etc.

Great collection of short stories. Gripping and the common theme of refugees threaded in all the stories was done in interesting ways. I can see why he won the Pulitzer Prize. Viet Thanh Nguyen narrates this and he does a great job. Soothing, interesting voice. Reminded me of Neil Gaiman. Not sure I'll listen to a short story collection again, probably stick to print for that. I found myself rewinding a lot to listen to particular bits.
