A wealthy lord who happens to be a brilliant scientist . . . an enigmatic young widow who secretly pens satirical cartoons . . . a violent killing disguised as a robbery . . . Nothing is as it seems in Regency London, especially when the Earl of Wrexford and Charlotte Sloane join forces to solve a shocking murder. When Lord Wrexford discovers the body of a gifted inventor in a dark London alley, he promptly alerts the watchman and lets the authorities handle the matter. But Wrexford soon finds himself drawn into the murder investigation when the inventors widow begs for his assistance, claiming the crime was not a random robbery. It seems her husbands designs for a revolutionary steam-powered engine went missing the night of his death. The plans could be worth a fortune . . . and very dangerous in the wrong hands. Joining Wrexford in his investigation is Charlotte Sloane, who uses the pseudonym A. J. Quill to publish her scathing political cartoons. Her extensive network of informants is critical for her work, but she doesnt mind tapping that same web of spies to track down an elusive killer. Each suspectfrom ambitious assistants to rich investors, and even the inventors widowis entwined in a maze of secrets and lies that leads Wrexford and Sloane down Londons most perilous stews and darkest alleyways. With danger lurking at every turn, the potent combination of Wrexfords analytical mind and Sloanes exacting intuition begins to unravel the twisted motivations behind the inventors death. But they are up against a cunning and deadly foea killer ready to strike again before they can recover the inventors priceless designs . . .

Great second book in the Wexford/Sloane mystery series. A strong historical mystery set in Regency London. Lord Wexford and Charlotte Sloane make a formidable, evenly matched pair. Friends of Raven and Hawk (Charlotte's wards) are a troupe of streetwise urchins who help gather information, similar to Holmes' Baker Street Irregulars.

Good characterization of both primary and secondary characters.

Andrew65 This looks great, I need to check it out. Well done 👏👏👏 1y
MaGoose @Andrew65 Check out Murder on Black Swan Lane, which is the first book in the series. Both books are equally good. 👍 1y

This is a great historical fiction series. A shame they couldn‘t spend a bit more time on proofreading.

Cathythoughts Looks so inviting 👍🏻 💜 (edited) 2y
Nebklvr @Cathythoughts They aren‘t quite as fast-paced as CS Harris series but very good 2y

The Wrexford & Sloane duo continues when a robbery thought to have gone awry turns out to be the murder of an inventor whose ideas would transform the steam-powered mechanized world of Regency London. Lord Wrexford's scientific mind combined with Charlotte Sloane's contacts from the unsavory side of the city help to bring the culprits to light. I was a fan of the premise for this on how 1 idea can be both transformative & dangerous for its owner.

I absolutely had to include the Wrexford & Sloane mysteries in this challenge. The very first ARC I ever received was of the first of the series, Murder on Black Swan Lane. Book 4 releases September 29th, and it was a preorder for me. The main characters are an unusual pair, and the supporting cast is fascinating. I recommend this series highly.

Andrew65 Sound good. (edited) 4y

Love when my reading draws upon my history degree and my background knowledge.Reading Locke is a journey into the early 18th century.

Locke‘s philosophical ideas were instrumental in the passing of English Copyright law.

I love how Wrexford and Sloane approach a murder mystery from different angles to solve the crime. Enjoyed book two as much as book one and excited to read book three next! Definitely a new favorite crime solving team.

I got to know about this series through #AskALibrarian chat on Twitter. One of the rare times I didn't start with the first book in the series and I have no complaints!

I like the character-driven plots and stories set in Regency/ Victorian #England have a certain charm.
I am now enjoying the first title in the series - Murder on Black Swan Lake.

It‘s been a long time since I read an ARC of the first in this series. This not only lives up to the potential of the first, but has me salivating for the third, which is out next week. Excellent characters, an intriguing whodunnit that kept me guessing for quite a while, and a unique concept. The early industrial revolution is the setting here, and the history is well researched. Definitely recommend. I love this gate we hiked through. ⬇️

Lynnsoprano It‘s from our trip to the Peak District in 2016. Too bad I don‘t have any photos of gates in London, the book‘s setting. 5y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Love this photo! 5y
Lynnsoprano @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Thank you! We went on a self-guided walk that day and got lost. We turned what was supposed to be a 2-mile walk into a 7-mile hike 😂 I got some great pictures, however. 5y

I picked this up a couple days ago when it was a Kindle bargain. I read the first of this series pre-publication and loved it. It‘s also the only time I‘ve ever had an author respond to my Goodreads review 😄 I don‘t know how I lost track of this series, but looking forward to starting this today.

Anyone out there who has started this series with Murder on Black Swan Lane (which is also currently $2.99 on US Kindle), tagged is the second in series. The third is due out later this month.

My #whodunitthesequel friends might be interested in this second book as the first was my pick for the group.

Heading into a three day weekend but I need a break from Empire of Cotton. These two books came up on library hold so I think that's what I will start with. Now to decide between #cozymystery and #urbanfantasy

A fun follow up in this cozy regency mystery series. The plot was much more enjoyable, as the whodunnit was a little more difficult to suss out this time. I‘ll admit the science kind of went over me, but I didn‘t mind, because once again the characters stole the show. The witty banter between every single character, especially between Wexford & the Weasels, & their deepening relationships, was delightful, which made for an engrossing read. ★★★½

Finally got the second Wrexford and Sloane mystery out from the library! I'd read the first as @robinb's choice for #whodunitthesequel and quite enjoyed that. This one was even better as the interaction amongst the characters has hit its stride.

MayJasper Sounds good 6y
robinb Totally agree @ScientistSam ! I loved the second one even more! ❤️😊 6y
ScientistSam @MayJasper it is! Though I'd read the first book in the series first - have you read it? 6y

Another recent finish is this second book in a historical fiction murder series. 1800s London, a duke who is a gruff chemist, and a woman who secretly illustrates the town‘s most popular scathing illustrations. This was as enjoyable as the first! And here‘s our new deck. If only it weren‘t a million degrees out right now; we could enjoy it more!

This second entry in the Wrexford & Sloane mystery series is another winner! Enjoyed learning more about these two characters and watching their relationship develop. Greed, jealousy and the thirst for power all played a part in this plot involving the cutthroat business of securing patents on steam engine innovations. Very nicely done, and I‘m hoping this adventure will continue. 4/5⭐️

GypsyKat Oh yes! I read the first one as an arc last year and loved it! I didn‘t know this was out already! 6y
