Heartless | Marissa Meyer
Long before she was the terror of Wonderland - the infamous Queen of Hearts - she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen . At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king's marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to defineher own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

This book was awesome. I loved the story,it was well written. A fun read. If you enjoyed Alice in Wonderland, you will enjoy this. Romance, betrayal, wackiness....all there.

The first part of the book brought out my inner child, even making me want to watch Disney's Alice in Wonderland again. Then I began to feel so incredibly sorry for Cath. Her mother was a horrible, wretched, selfish, person. I pitied Cath and felt saddened that she had no say over her own life. The ending seemed a bit rushed with her dramatic change in personality. That's why I gave it 4 stars.
And Jest. Oh, Jest! ❤😭
Wearing my necklace today. 😍

I absolutely love fairy tale retellings and think this might be one of my favourite Alice in Wonderland inspired ones! It is a fantastic tale of the how the Queen of Hearts becomes the wicked villain. The character evolution was amazing and so well done! I loved the world that was built, and all the nuances and quirks that carried over from the original tale. Such a wonderful read!

Rereading Heartless for my penultimate OWL #Magicalreadathon
I still have to read a book for Arithmancy. Do you have any suggestions? For those of you who don't know, to complete the challenge for Arithmancy, I need to read a book written by multiple authors. Currently I only have Obsidio, but I'm not really in the mood for Sci-fi.

As for #Tometopple I finished 2 tomes and I'm in the middle of HP & the Goblet of fire. 💪
I'll post soon again.

jenniferw88 Neil Gaiman? 1mo
OnePageAtATime @BooksAndTea97 what genre of books are you in the mood for? 1mo
BooksAndTea97 @OnePageAtATime maybe a fantasy (but nothing to complicated) or some lighter read, I'm up for anything.. It's just that when reading sci-fi I really need to concentrate to follow the plot properly. 1mo
BooksAndTea97 @jenniferw88 thank you, I'll check it out. 😄 1mo

3.5 ⭐️

It turns out that the Queen of Hearts wasn‘t always so nasty, but instead was a lovely girl with hopes and dreams and a love of baking. This book gives us an interesting twist on the tales of Wonderland we all know, seeing familiar characters from a different perspective, and it is equally wonderful and woeful finding out how and why they become who we now know them to be.

I expected to like this book so much more.

I didn't enjoy Cath and found her quite unlikable. Even worse though was all the sitting around she did. When she finally acted everything crashed and burned.

I very rarely dislike a book after reading it, but this one is a no from me dawg.

absolutebookish I felt the same way. It was so disappointing, especially after The Lunar Chronicles series. 😖 1mo

Catherine does not want to be queen but it is her destiny. Jest does not want to be a joker or a rook, but he he has his fate as well. Ah...I wanted like this one but I found the Cath Jest relationship to be forced and unbelievable. Also, Cath‘s dramatic personality change at the end odd. This was just not for me.

Angry people usually have a story, a reason. Even the Queen of Hearts. This is her story, delightfully told by Marissa Meyer. You‘ll fall in love with the girl that she was. You‘ll root for her and you‘ll cry for her. And as nasty as the Queen of Hearts is...you‘ll understand. It was magical and whimsical without being overly done or forced.

"The easiest way to steal something, is for it to be given willingly."

I was really suspicious about this one. Now I'm mad at myself 'cause I didn't read it sooner. I did not believe that a book with an ending I already know could break me this much.
Honestly this is not the most complex fantasy I've read, but it completely enchanted me. Marissa is a master of retellings. I wanted to DNF it somewhere near the end and pretend it ended differently.

Although a bit slow for me, overall I enjoyed reading about the making of the Queen of Hearts and her adventures with the other inhabitants of Wonderland. I especially enjoyed the unfolding mystery and fun of Jest and Raven. I did think the reveal of the big bad was obvious though, and I would have to say that I would recommend the Lunar Chronicles over this one if you‘re new to Marissa Meyer.
