Escape from Aleppo
Escape from Aleppo | N. H. Senzai
20 posts | 12 read | 34 to read
Filled with kindness and hope, but also with the harsh realities of the horrors of war, this heartbreaking book is a necessary reminder of what many people live through every day. Booklist (starred review) Nadias family is forced to flee their home in Aleppo, Syria, when the Arab Spring sparks a civil war in this timely coming-of-age novel from award-winning author N.H. Senzai. Silver and gold balloons. A birthday cake covered in pink roses. A new dress. Nadia stands at the center of attention in her parents elegant dining room. This is the best day of my life, she thinks. Everyone is about to sing Happy Birthday, when her uncle calls from the living room, Baba, brothers, you need to see this. Reluctantly, she follows her family into the other room. On TV, a reporter stands near an overturned vegetable cart on a dusty street. Beside it is a mound of smoldering ashes. The reporter explains that a vegetable vendor in the city of Tunis burned himself alive, protesting corrupt government officials who have been harassing his business. Nadia frowns. It is December 17, 2010: Nadias twelfth birthday and the beginning of the Arab Spring. Soon anti-government protests erupt across the Middle East and, one by one, countries are thrown into turmoil. As civil war flares in Syria and bombs fall across Nadias home city of Aleppo, her family decides to flee to safety. Inspired by current events, this novel sheds light on the complicated situation in Syria that has led to an international refugee crisis, and tells the story of one girls journey to safety.

Tuesday is Election Day in the United States!

The bulk of my job is done now, and I'm looking forward to getting back to weekly #IntegrateYourShelf posts. Since politics is what took me away from it, I thought this would be a fitting prompt for jumping back in.

The tagged book was incredibly eye opening, especially when I took the time to think about where I was during the time period this book happens in (December 2010). I was so unaware...😢

WhatWouldJaneDo Oooh that's an interesting topic, going to have to think on that one! 3y
Chrissyreadit I am so incredibly grateful for litsy and all of you- even when I do not join in with various posts my reading has become richer through diversity- and I am so much more aware of how I was not aware ❤️❤️❤️ 3y
Moll @ChasingOm This book sounds amazing! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sorry I missed this one (at least in a timely manner). I have a whole section on my blog on political books. Maybe I‘ll just post a link! Because different people like different books. 3y

This was a really interesting book. I learned a lot about the “Arab Spring,“ and Syria. I also enjoyed Senzai's book “Shooting Kabul.“ I look forward to reading more of her work.

This was a tough one for me. Not because of the subject matter necessarily, but because I realized early on that these events were going on when I was old enough to have been paying attention but I didn‘t. 😔 This realization was made worse by the fact that I read this book the evening after the Notre Dame Fire, when its destruction was everywhere on social media, yet the cultural devastation of the Syrian War has made barely a blip. 😭 cont.👇🏻

ChasingOm The photo behind the book is of a cultural item in front of the National Museum of Syria, sandbagged for as much protection as possible during the shellings and bombings. 5y
ChasingOm If you‘re like me and one of the reasons you read is to become aware of gaps in either your education of history or your awareness of current events, I would highly recommend picking this one up. 5y

It doesn't seem like much but it took me a lot of thought and time to cull this stack together for #24in48 I have book club books, books for challenges and half of the titles are focused on diversity. I also have some library requests out as well so my stack will change a bit but otherwise I'm ready to go!

mrp27 @smilingshelves I can't wait to finally read it, I've heard nothing but good things about it! 6y
24in48 Love! 6y

New stack of books for school. Rob Buyea was in town and kids raved about The Perfect Score. We can‘t keep the rest of Jason Reynolds Track series on the shelf so it‘s time for Sunny. #goodbooks #nationalbookweek #chapterbooks #diversity

Nebklvr Our kids love the track series and Long Way Down by Reynolds 6y

Left behind when her family flees Aleppo & war-torn Syria for Turkey, Nadia makes her way to the border hoping to be reunited. Along the way she must rely on the help of strangers & stay ahead of the government troops and others who pose a threat. Through occasional rough patches in the writing, this MG book remains a powerful & emotional read introducing young readers to the Arab Spring, the war in Syria, refugees, & a very brave young girl.

Going to have the coffee tomorrow morning and that chocolate probably tonight 😁 I like the thingy for holding the book open a lot too!! No fear of the better half stealing that.... he can't fit his thumb in it😂

Kendyl @8little_paws yay finally! Sorry it took so long! Glad you like it. I know Pete's is somewhat regular around here but it is one I really love and a friend turned me on to it about a year ago, so I thought I would pass it on! The thing for your finger is pretty cool like I said my husband prints them and made one for me I love it! Enjoy!! 6y
