Maya is stocking up on Battle of the Books reads, and I picked up a stack of #WinterGames reading, one of which is the December selection for my book club. I don‘t usually read this genre, so we‘ll see how I like them. I signed up for @Clwojick ‘s #WinterGames, but as a #renegade and didn‘t join a team, to keep it super low pressure. 🤣

This Newberry Honor book by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. I have to admit made me cry at first. This is a historical fiction book is set in the onset of World War II and the main character Ada is truly struggling she has a physical disability and she being horribly abused by her mother but thanks to the War she able to escape her mother. This story is a how little girl survived and was able to make a difference. #ucflae3414f19

What a beautiful, heart-warming #audiobook! A young girl with a club foot is evacuated from London to the English countryside with her little brother at the start of WWII. Having suffered physical and emotional abuse at the hand of their mother, young Ada and little Jamie begin to blossom under the loving care of their guardian Sarah. Sarah, too, comes back to life with renewed fervor. Highly recommended!

YA historical fiction for my school‘s reading challenge.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I read a fair number of middle grade books, but usually just to see what my daughter is reading. This is the first MG book I‘ve read before my daughter and I will be handing it off to her as soon as I return from discussing it at my book club. A wonderful historical about a girl who is evacuated during WWII and learns her own value and how to trust others. Definitely a book for everyone, not just middle graders!

This HF Newbery Honor is a great book for IR. I read it on my own this semester and couldn‘t put it down. The story of young Ada and her brother in a time of war tugs at your heart strings. Wow! This was one of those young adult/children‘s books that is so well written it could be an adult‘s book. It deals with tough subjects like disability, generational abuse, war, adoption, and poverty in nuanced ways. Well-written and hopeful, yet, I wouldn‘t recommend to a child without someone to help them make sense of the tough stuff. So glad I picked this one up on #modernmrsdarcy ‘s recommendation.

I just finished this wonderful duology. I can see why it was a #Newbery honor book. It's great for fans of Anne of Green Gables, or history lovers. #WW2 #middlegradeMay is off to an amazing start, these two will be hard to beat.

The War that Saved My Life is a HF book written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley and have won the Newbery award. I think this book would a great way to combine history and literature together. I think this book would do well in a LC setting. I feel like this book would do well in a third grade class to about fifth or sixth grade. #LAE3414sp19

What a great book for adults and children alike! I love how the main character, Ada, must sort through and learn to deal with her emotions of anxiety, frustration, anger, and love.

The book “The War That Saved Me” is a HF book that would be beneficial as a SR with students around middle school. (Schneider Family Book Award & Newberry Honor Award) The main character, Ada, has never been out of her house before due to her twisted foot. When her brother gets shipped to London to escape the war, she follows. Ada‘s brother and Ada get close to a woman in London that takes them in.

I was not expecting to be as moved as I was at this book. I thought it was a great description of Ada's big feelings of anxiety at new changes, frustration at her own ignorance of the world, and resentment at her mother confirming what she already knew: her mother didn't care about her. Juxtaposing all this against WW2 England just made the conflict-and it's resolution-even more vivid.

I loved this so much! Bradley weaves an amazingly empathetic story of Ada, who was born with a club foot, and her little brother Jamie. At the beginning of the novel, they live with Mam, who is ashamed of Ada and holds her captive inside their small apartment in World War II-era London. (continued in comments)

I just started the book and it is so amazing. It‘s such a moving start for me. Such an astonishing book. Must read.

Definitely a 5-star read. Now, I have to get the second book in the series so I can find out what happens to Ada.

Finished this one last night. Such a quick read, and I really loved the kids and how they had to learn how to let others love them.

What a great story. Loved all the characters. My only complaint is the pacing of the story. I felt like it dragged a bit on in the middle and then a whole lot happened in the last 30 pages or so, but the ending gave me all the feels. Will definitely read the sequel.

Next up on my middle grade/YA reading spree. This definitely seems geared toward younger audiences but I‘ve heard great things from adults about it too! Can‘t wait to get into it.

Yes, I got distracted while working on my books (seen in my previous post) so those of you who predicted that were absolutely correct! I found this one in the stacks and thought I should read it so I can pass it along to my 13 year old niece when I see her later this month. Gatsby agrees as she‘s trapped me on the couch by snuggling into my legs. Guess I‘ll finish the book sorting tomorrow.

An extremely well done WWII novel told from the viewpoint of an 8 year old disabled evacuee. The story captured her fear of all things as well as her voice. I loved how Ada‘s voice changed as she grew and learned. And her observations of life during wartime. Looking forward to book 2.

I really enjoyed this, and managed to get through it in two days. A few Americanisms bothered me (canned v tinned, scarf v muffler) but nothing major. I loved how Ada developed her confidence and independence, and I liked how Susan had some issues of her own to overcome. I think the author handled Susan's background very subtly and I loved it. Can't wait to track down the sequel!

I'm enjoying this so far, but one thing bugs me. The writer is trying to get all the aspects of British life and speech, but they're eating canned beans? Not tinned? Sticks out a bit, clearly marking the writer as American.

This HF novel I would use for a LC is a story about Ada living in 1939 during WWII who is forbidden to leave the house. To escape the war, Ada and her brother leave London to the countryside without their mothers knowledge where they stay with a woman Susan. Ada struggles with a twisted club foot as well as many thing. During her journey she learns a lot even teaching herself how to walk. #UCFLAE3414SP18

This book is our latest #mommydaughterbuddyread pick. She's almost done, I haven't even started.

I got this book thinking I would add it to my daughter‘s history curriculum since the setting was during WW2. It was not at all what I expected. While it is set in WW2 the plot is not focused on the war but on Ada and her life with a club foot. What an amazing story. So beautiful. I highly recommend.

WWII is taking many lives but it might just save Ada and Jamie‘s. When these two neglected kids get sent from London to the country, they just might find a home. Sweet and sad.

I‘m coaching a 5th Grade Battle of the Books team, and this was one of the books on our list. The storytelling is superb, and I have such affection for Ada, Jamie, and the friends they make along the way.

My 15th and last book for the month of January. Such a great book! Perfect for historical fiction fans young and old and everything in between!
