To Kill a Kingdom
To Kill a Kingdom | Alexandra Christo
Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most--a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen and or remain a human forever. The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby--it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good--But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?

I really enjoyed this book. A fun dark adventure with sirens, pirates, a daring quest and a little romance. The world building was superb and I loved the slow burn enemies to lovers romance.

An interesting concept that fell apart in areas. The entire book built up to this epic battle, which was over in like 2 pages. The characters made some leaps that they shouldn't have been able to come up with on their own. It would've been better if the author had fleshed it out more.

I ended up enjoying this much more than I expected to! I wasn‘t sure a Little Mermaid retelling was gonna work for me, but it was dark & twisted & inventive while still taking inspiration from the source material, and I really liked what the author did with it. It‘s amusing at times too! It did drag a bit about 3/4 in, & the big battle at the end went on oddly long. But overall it was a fun escape, which I‘m in desperate need of these days. 4/5 ⭐️

Whatever it means, she says it with fear and reverence. A combination I‘m rarely used to seeing. In my kingdom, those who revere me don‘t know me well enough to fear me. And those who fear me know me far too well to do something as unwise as adore me.

[The Sea Queen] has ancient symbols and runes tattooed over her stomach in red, stretching even to her gloriously carved cheekbones. Her tentacles are black and scarlet, fading into one another like blood spilled into ink, and her eyes have long since turned to rubies. Even her crown is a magnificent headdress that peaks in horns atop her head and flows out like limbs down her back.

I know it‘s a cliché to say people either love this book or hate it, but scrolling down the reviews on GR, even just from my friends and follows, I‘m seeing a bunch of ALL CAPS BOLD TEXT 5-star reviews and a bunch of 2-star “meeehhhhhhhh” ones. But I‘m in the mood for a twisted retelling, so let‘s go ??‍♀️? #nowreading

So I loved this book! It was beautifully written and the characters grew over the course of the book and you found yourself fighting for them and their kingdoms. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fairytales (it was like the little mermaid but darker), adventure, romance, and intrigue! The audiobook was beautifully narrated and while that is mainly because the narrators we're superb it also speaks to the author. So s/o to both.

LauraWeasley @OnePageAtATime Well, I really enjoyed both of Mackenzi Lee's books on audio (Gentleman's Guide/Lady's Guide) and also The Cruel Prince. Jason Isaacs did a great job with A Monster Calls. I also really liked Stalking Jack the Ripper, Leah on the Offbeat and The Raven Boys (even though it took me a while to get used to the narrator). Quite a few different genres, right? 😂 4mo
LauraWeasley @OnePageAtATime Oh, I almost forgot my absolute favorite (and I ran out of space 😁): I loved, loved, loved Illuminae! Though I would recommend listening to it while reading the physical book. 4mo

Just reread this last week and I enjoyed it just as much the second time around!
I don‘t usually go for retellings, but I really really liked this one — so original, and very well-executed multiple POVs.

imyril I‘ve left it far too long to write my review of this (which would have been yay! Squee! More please!) so was wondering whether I would just _have_ to reread it (what a hardship) 🤣 So much fun 5mo

Predictable as ever. And to those who say this a Little Mermaid retelling I can‘t agree at all, it‘s more loosely inspired by the story but definitely not in my opinion a retelling. I got bored towards the end with all the handholding during the middle of a battle and all the predictable love story parts. It just got overwhelming bland. Lira‘s initial personality was really nice but then it took a nose dive so eh. At least I‘m done with it now.

Started this book today, so far it‘s semi-interesting the descriptions of the mermaids is by far the most fascinating ever (the sirens are just ehh) The Sea Queen has a really interesting description as well, but story wise it‘s already coming of predictable and I can feel who the love story is going to involve and that‘s annoying. Honestly I would love for it to end with either the prince or siren killing the other but I doubt that will happen.

I loved this book so much! Lira has to be one of my favorite characters I've come across the in awhile. The story was great the plot was kept me invested the entire time and I got attatched to all of the characters but Lira really was the stand out of the book for me. I just adored how even whelile the story progressed she stayed kind of dark.

#Unwanted by her mother, the Sea Queen, Princess Lira was banished from the sirens' kingdom & turned into a human, a creature most despised by the sirens. Her paths crossed with Prince Elian's when he saved her at sea. Their fates sealed when they made a pact to bring down the heartless Sea Queen. Loved this YA retelling of The Little Mermaid recommended to me by @thewallflower0707 for my #newyearwhodis challenge! Full review on my blog! ⬇️⬇️

What a joy from start to finish. I was excited for a Little Mermaid retelling where she rips the hearts out of princes‘ chests; but I loved the relocation to a Greek-inflected secondary world. A breezy read of characters who really aren‘t as wicked as they like to think, cast in gorgeous hues and fairytale descriptions. A bit of a Schwab vibe, and delightfully a stand alone. A favourite for the year.

I had really high hopes for this book and I‘m mostly just disappointed. Everything was just a little bit off; the world building didn‘t feel complete, there were glaring mistakes in the copy editing, the pacing was slow, and the character building felt flat. My copy lists it as a good read for fans of Maas and Bardugo and that is not only untrue in quality, but also content.

I wish I was enjoying this more than I am. The pacing feels off and it‘s moved onto a heist story which really doesn‘t seem to fit the plot. And to be honest, I think Six of Crows ruined me for book party banter because everything I‘ve read so far is making me cringe a little bit.

Angst to the max I guess. I‘m still intrigued by the story, but whenever a character uses the phrase “dark like my soul” (unless they‘re joking) I have to roll my eyes.

And my current reads. On TKaK tonight -- it's interesting, a dark YA fantasy fairy tale retelling of The Little Mermaid where the mermaid is a deadly siren that collects hearts and the prince is a siren hunter. Stylistically it's a little generic to start but an interesting enough premise to keep me in.
