Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day Weekend: A Deal of Cold Business | Robert W. Witt
18 posts
Christina Lyon was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and grew up in southern England. Her father, a brilliant concert pianist of Polish descent whose mysterious past left him hardened and embittered, caused Christina to flee home as a young woman.Years later, upon his death Christinas father bequeathed to her his secret journals, a compilation of scratched diary entries and memoirs disclosing the details of his past as a spy in postwar Poland. Christina, taken aback by the revelation, was determined to chronicle the life of the father that she apparently never knew. Christinas discovery and writing about her father leads her back to the country ofher birth, where she meets Robert MacFarlane - the strong, seductive, and unattainable Scottish King - who upon first sight sets Christinas head spinning. But the usual love story does not ensue. The pairs path together is fraught with peril, as Christinas activities pertaining to her father and his dangerous past captures the attention of a diabolical man called Zielinski, a man hell bent on suppressing the incriminating information contained in her fathers journals. Recovering, Christinas fianc, David, deserts her by breaking off their engagement. But the Scottish King, upon news of the attack, returns to Christina and guards her through what would be her final altercation with Zielinski...

#twointhree I‘ve officially and completely over shot the mark here. I have to admit that I have truly enjoyed spending the last three days resting, relaxing, and reading. I‘m half tempted to start the next Gareth and Gwen book right away, but ANW is on so I shouldn‘t even attempt to finish it tonight. It might be best to remove the temptation and wait until tomorrow to start it. #overachiever #fiveinthree

Faibka Medieval mysteries? Sounds intriguing! :) 6y
GingerAntics @Faibka they are great little mystery novels. I definitely recommend them. 6y

#twointhree I‘ve officially done it backwards. I‘ve finished three books in two days instead of finishing two books in three days. I‘m making good progress on book 4 and should finish it tonight or tomorrow morning.

Samplergal Woo hoo! 6y

It‘s been a humid, wet weekend but the grill is going, there‘s a nice breeze, and I have one more day to relax with a good book.

#twointhree I got really excited for the progression of this series that I knocked out both books on day one (I started the first yesterday, and the second today). Now, it‘s almost become a test to see just how many I can finish (and I guess start) in a three day weekend. #sarahwoodburry #thelostbrother #therenegademerchant #wasles #history #welshhistory #gatethandgwen

Mandigolightly You had me at welsh history 6y
GingerAntics @Mandigolightly lol this is historical fiction, which I don‘t always like, but I do enjoy this series. I don‘t know as much about Welsh history as I do about Scottish or Irish history, too, so I‘m not seeing red flags where inaccuracies come in (if their are any), so that could be it, too. This series has definitely gotten me interested in Welsh history, though, so I‘m building up a Welsh history TBR if you have any suggestions. 6y
GingerAntics @Mandigolightly the first book of the series, “The Good Knight” is free on kindle and iBooks which is how @Texreader and I both got into it, so it has that going for it, too. lol 6y

Mandigolightly Thanks! I‘ll check it out! 6y
GingerAntics @Mandigolightly thanks for the book recommendations!!! 6y
Samplergal Yay! Good job! I finished mine as well yesterday, but to be fair, both mine were in progress. 6y
GingerAntics @Samplergal I have multiple books in progress, so honestly I was expecting to finish two of them, but I‘ve been swept away by the later books in this series. They just keep getting better and better. 6y

Finishing 2 books over the holiday weekend sounds great to me! I‘ve learned that books in progress count, so I‘m probably going to have to start with Anne of Green Gables — then I have a stack of short, summer-themed Newbery novels I‘d love to dig into before fall officially sets in — who knows, could I actually finish more than 2? We shall see!

Samplergal You got this! I‘m reading two half finished books. Kick off September with two finishes. Lol! 6y

@Samplergal just finished 3 books in 2 days...wait, that‘s not right...and a bit early. Premature reading is never a good sign. Okay, this thing starts Saturday, right? lol

Samplergal Hey it‘s good to be early everywhere you go! At least that‘s my momma taught me. 😉 6y
GingerAntics @Samplergal lol I was always told “if you‘re 15 minutes early, you‘re on time. If you‘re on time, you‘re late. If you‘re late, you better be running.” I always got the impression that the subtext of that last one was “with a missing limb or a dead body.” lol 6y

akckitty I wanna join 😩😩😩 but I‘ll be partaking at a wedding reception that‘s a state away. Hope y‘all have a good time! 6y
GingerAntics @akckitty you could finish a book on the way there and another on the way home. You don‘t have to start them over the weekend. I already double checked that. 6y
akckitty @GingerAntics awesome!! I‘ll give it a go then! ☺️ 6y
GingerAntics @akckitty yeah I was thinking there was no way I could possibly do that, but then they said it was finish, not start and finish, so I figured I could do that. 6y

Two books in three days, I'm up for the challenge. It will certainly help me start September off right.

#TwoInThree @Samplergal

GingerAntics Do I have to start them over the weekend, too? 6y
Samary Whew, going to be rough but I‘ll give it a shot! 6y
MirrorMask @GingerAntics I don't think so. Just have them completed before Monday ends. 6y
GingerAntics I can do that. I‘m in!!! 6y

With all the fun of Labor Day weekend, I haven't been able to be on Litsy for a week and I've really missed everyone! Hope everyone is doing well and with both Irma and Harvey have been able to stay safe.

🙋Now to review my end of August reads...

The schedule is out!!! Yes, it's been online, but I love having a newspaper copy. Looking forward to next weekend!!!!

melrailey I'll be there too! This is one of my favorite festivals. Who are you most looking forward too? I'll be around the Teen Stage most of the weekend but I'm super excited about Tess Gerritsen. 7y
Well-ReadNeck @melrailey Probably looking forward to Tom Perotta the most. But, I love to find new authors here, too. Would really like to see Claire Messud and Thomas Mullen, but they are both in the only venue I avoid (musty church which aggregates my asthma whenever I try to sit in there). So I'll likely pass. 7y
melrailey I'm going to try and hit the Thomas Mullen signing. I read Dark Town by him and loved it! 7y
mklong I'm so excited too! I spent my lunch break highlighting all the panels I want to try to get to. I didn't make it to A Capella's event for Atlanta Noir, so I was really happy to see them on the schedule for DBF 7y
Well-ReadNeck @mklong Atlanta Noir was so great. The variety in the stories was fab. I didn't get to the 8/1 thing either. I may hit this one, but really just wanted to see Tayari Jones 😍 (edited) 7y
