A History of Wales
A History of Wales | John Davies
2 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Stretching from the Ice Ages to the present day, this masterful account traces the political, social and cultural history of the land that has come to be called Wales. Spanning prehistoric hill forts and Roman ruins to the Reformation, the Industrial Revolution and the series of strikes by Welsh miners in the late twentieth century, this is the definitive history of an enduring people: a unique and compelling exploration of the origins of the Welsh nation, its development and its role in the modern world. This new edition brings this remarkable history into the new era of the Welsh Assembly.

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
Happy St. David‘s Day!

St. David is the patron Saint of Wales and is said to have died in this day in A.D. 589. I have been learning Welsh for a while now and have found recent evidence I may have Welsh ancestry (to be confirmed). I‘m looking forward to being joyful today. #StDavidsDay #Wales #WelshHistory #DoTheLittleThings

BarbaraTheBibliophage Happy St. David‘s Day! I‘m part Welsh, so I always appreciate this bit of Welsh history and culture in our year. Impressed you‘re learning Welsh! 2y
jimfields3 Thanks! I started because it sounds fascinating to me, and I like learning an under-used language. Cymru am byth! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 2y

My fellow Littens! I'm really interested in Wales and would love recommendations of where to start, reading-wise (fiction, history books, anything really!). Can anyone help me with this? Thanks! 💚

TrishB This is the start of a fab trilogy. 4y
BarbaraJean I've tagged Sixpence House--a lovely memoir about the author moving to Hay on Wye, the “Town of Books“ in Wales. For Welsh myths/legends, you could try the Mabinogion (source for lots of the Arthurian legends). And a Welsh friend once told me that Alexander Cordell is the Welsh Charles Dickens...not sure how apt that comparison is, but his trilogy that starts with Rape of the Fair Country is a good place to start for Welsh historical fiction. 4y

wordslinger42 @TrishB @BarbaraJean Thank you both so much! These sound wonderful and I've added them all to my tbr 😊 4y
BarbaraJean You‘re welcome! Hope you enjoy! I also just remembered Stephen Lawhead‘s King Raven trilogy—it‘s a Robin Hood retelling placing the characters in 11th century Wales instead of in England. Tagging the first book! 4y
TheAromaofBooks If you like historical mysteries, I love the Brother Cadfael books - they take place in a border town between England and Wales. They should be read in order if you read them, and the first one is 4y
