The highly anticipated NEW Tortall Legend from TAMORA PIERCE, the #1 New York Times bestselling author who is legend herself, is a must-read for any fantasy lover! Arram. Varice. Ozorne. In the first book in the Numair Chronicles, three student mages are bound by fate . . . fated for trouble.Arram Draper is a boy on the path to becoming one of the realm's most powerful mages. The youngest student in his class at the Imperial University of Carthak, he has a Gift with unlimited potential for greatness--and for attracting danger. At his side are his two best friends: Varice, a clever girl with an often-overlooked talent, and Ozorne, the "leftover prince" with secret ambitions. Together, these three friends forge a bond that will one day shape kingdoms. And as Ozorne gets closer to the throne and Varice gets closer to Arram's heart, Arram begins to realize that one day soon he will have to decide where his loyalties truly lie. In the Numair Chronicles, readers will be rewarded with the never-before-told story of how Numair Salmalin came to Tortall. Newcomers will discover an unforgettable fantasy adventure where a kingdom's future rests on the shoulders of a talented young man with a knack for making vicious enemies."Tamora Pierce's books shaped me not only as a young writer but also as a young woman. She is a pillar, an icon, and an inspiration. Cracking open one of her marvelous novels always feels like coming home."--SARAH J. MAAS, #1 New York Times bestselling author"Tamora Pierce didn't just blaze a trail. Her heroines cut a swath through the fantasy world with wit, strength, and savvy. Her stories still lead the vanguard today. Pierce is the real lioness, and we're all just running to keep pace."--LEIGH BARDUGO, #1 New York Times bestselling author

I‘m continuing with my deep dive into the oldest, and dustiest, sections of my TBR stacks. I‘m afraid if I let some of these books linger tooooooooooo long, books that I was presumably interested in when I bought them, I will lose all interest and not give them the attention they deserve. Tamora Pierce is always good though and I‘m really not sure why I haven‘t picked this book up before now. Here goes!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love the castle! 1d
Crazeedi You are so brave! I so need to do that too! I'm promising myself to scour my shelves for my challenges next year!! 1d
Follow.my.read So many of my books end up at half price books because my interests change by the time I get to them! I‘ve also been trying to curb my book buying until I get to some oldies but goodies!!!! (edited) 1d

Love the tortall series and Tamora Pierce's writing. Such fun seeing familiar characters and how they came to be the great and powerful people they are in previous books that came later chronologically. Sweet trio of kids. Magic school. Rich fantasy world. It has all you need.

My 1st experience of Pierce & I found it more middle grade than the YA I was expecting. Similarities with HP thematically but also the writing has the similar quality of easy readability as Rowling's. It's not particularly sophisticated but has a rhythm that is seductive and absorbing. While I see how this is a set-up for the trilogy and appreciate that this is quality fantasy .... cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi ....in terms of the world building, imagination, lack of the dreaded 'cheese' factor, & it will appeal to a huge audience, nowt much actually happens in this outing. And while it is so tightly written that it didn't feel boring, I was aware that what i was reading was just the daily tribulations of a school boy albeit a magical one & I longed for a little more real action or genuine intrigue. 7mo
CoffeeK8 If it helps, this is a prequel to her Immortals Series where Numair plays a big role as an adult. I haven‘t read this one yet, so I don‘t know how it stacks up to the original series. 7mo

Starting this one today. With thanks to #netgalley for this book.

Think it's a prequel to an existing series...which I haven't read. So I'm either gonna be clueless & confused or intriguing & hooked into another series - as if my TBR schedule isn't crammed enough!

The photo‘s of Wild Magic, but I promise this is about Tempests and Slaughter: there are certainly some discrepancies between the Numair of the new series and The Immortals (the first book Numair appeared in). Mostly in what spells Numair is good at and able to handle and what Arram (his younger self) is good at. Minor problems, but discrepancies I‘m finding nonetheless. 😢

🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 If you like coming of age stories set in fantastical worlds, check out Tempests and Slaughter. It‘s the story of Arram Draper before he was Numair Salmalin (a beloved character from Pierce‘s previous Tortall books). This first book is set in his early teens and has all I‘ve come to love about Pierce books. Whether you‘ve read her before or are just now discovering Tortall, I could not rec this book more!

so im #currentlyreading the first of #tamorapierce ‘s new series and y‘all!! This is such a fun drop back into Pierce‘s Tortall ♥️♥️ if u love Pierce‘s books where growing up can be gross, hard, and magical, then this one is for you. I think (tho im reading it from a non-newbies eyes) this isnt a bad book to jump into Pierce‘s Tortall universe. ☺️

This books was MUCH better than I thought it would be. A perfect blending of mage school and world building. A really well written description of a young, shy mage and his friends. The female characters, as always with Pierce, are full fledged, and we gain insight into how the future emperor got to be as crazy as he was. I can‘t wait to read the next book in the series and I appreciate the messages about human and animal rights. 4/5 stars

I‘ve always loved Numair, and I‘ve loved getting to know him as young Arram Draper. This book is full of fun Easter eggs and insights. I can‘t wait to see what happens in “The Exile‘s Gift”! 🙌🏼📚🤓💕

As the beginning of a series this was a good start. It's a long book and felt it at times but I did enjoy the story. It's not heavy in drama but lots going on. This tells the story of his early years at mage school. The plot was interesting and detailed. The ending was good as it left you wanting more but no major cliffhanger. The introduction of Preet was clever and I really loved her.

Arram, and his friends, Varice and Prince Ozorne, move through terms of the Imperial University of Carthak, attending classes, making friends and enemies, learning from powerful mages. Arram's day-to-day life makes up the most of the book and Tamora Pierce has created a World ready for adventure and it feels as if some real drama is around the next corner. thanks to the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for this book in exchange for an honest review

I've been a fan of Tamora Pierce since I was in middle school and constantly look for books that remind me of her books.

I was so excited to read this book. The plot mostly felt like setup for later books and is full of foreshadowing for the immortals series where Arram/Numair first shows up. I really enjoyed the detail it adds to the world and look forward to the rest of the series.

Now I have to go reread Wild Magic!

But also there‘s an author called Maria V Snyder. Try her Poison Study series: https://www.goodreads.com/series/44007-poison-study similar but reads older. Good luck. (edited) 12mo

Numair is my all time favorite character from the Tortall universe so I was bound to enjoy this book about his origin story. This book is definitely a slow-burn fantasy; not much happens plot wise but I can tell that this book is really meant to set up events for book 2. I've always loved how Pierce describes magic and I'm eagerly awaiting book 2.

Also, Pierce should be giving SJM cover quotes not the other way around. #salty 😑

I was immediately hooked on her storytelling and bought every book she'd published from then on. Daine and Kel's stories in particular were my go-to books when I wanted something familiar and comforting. It's been a few years since I read any of her works so I'm excited to dive back in!

In the first book of #TheNumairChronicles, we meet young Arram Draper, who will one day be called Numair Salmadín, as he studies magic at the University in Carthak with his best friends Ozorne & Varice. Populated with characters new & familiar, this the backstory we who love the The Immortals quartet have been waiting for. It could also be a point of entry for those new to #Tortall, though not the first I‘d recommend.
