Short and sweet, a slice-of-life story of a fifth-grade girl in Depression-era Detroit. After a long illness Elsa spends a summer with her grandparents on Lake Huron. She writes poetry (included) and gets to know her grandparents in a new way. Touches on food insecurity, anti-German sentiment in both world wars, and much more. It needed a bit more length to push it into a pick.
