Camino Island
Camino Island | John Grisham
A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a secure vault deep below Princeton University's Firestone Library. Their loot is priceless, but Princeton has insured it for twenty-five million dollars. Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in the black market of stolen books and manuscripts. Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer's block who has recently been laid off from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even more mysterious company. A generous offer of money convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate Bruce Cable's circle of literary friends, ideally getting close enough to him to learn his secrets. But eventually Mercer learns far too much, and there's trouble in paradise as only John Grisham can deliver it.

This is my favorite non-legal Grisham novel. It takes place on Camino Island, FL (based loosely on Amelia Island). Five original F. Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts are stolen. In an an effort to retrieve them, a young writer with a history on the island is recruited to cozy up to a rare books dealer believed to be in possession of the manuscripts, but she starts to like the guy and the writing community on the island.
I didn't want to put it down.

Grisham departs from his legal thriller in this book and I was not to sure how I felt about it. The first part of the book is fast paced and thrilling, while the second part of the book is slow and meandering. It still kept my interest as I really wanted to know what happened. Overall a good read but not a great one of you are looking for a legal thriller.

This was a fun listen! I don‘t think I would have liked it as much if I read it instead of listening due to all the technical aspects of the case in the beginning and the end of the book. Not one I‘d usually pick but it was definitely enjoyable and ended satisfactorily.

Completely ridiculous story, but it works as brain candy when you‘re in a hotel room with three other people and your only reading option is the Libby app. I picked it because it‘s about a stolen Gatsby manuscript, and I love Gatsby.

I really liked this book a lot. I haven‘t read much of John Grisham‘s books before and decided to give this one a try and ended up enjoying it a lot. It was a good story about stolen books and some of my favorite authors - Hemingway and Fitzgerald and little facts about them and the book industry. It had suspense and was very entertaining.

What started as a fun rare book heist turned into a strangely waffling story with an obnoxious middle-aged man inexplicably attractive to a struggling young author who has accepted money to keep an ear out for information on his involvement with the stolen goods. The resolution doesn't make any sense (see spoiler below) and just reinforces the fact that his charm is all tell and absolutely zero show (author insert?)

Mr. Grisham, why are you ruining my heist and spy story by making your main character act like a creep? Staaaaaaaaahhhhhhhp

RestlessFickleBookHoarder Is it just me or do male authors do this a lot. I just finished a book and there were so many scenes interrupted by pointless sex, boobies or (I swear) pubic hair references. 10mo
CaramelLunacy @RestlessFickleBookHoarder It definitely seems to come up way more often than I find realistic. Also. Icky! 10mo
RestlessFickleBookHoarder So so icky. It rarely works so I wish authors wouldn't do it. 10mo
CaramelLunacy @RestlessFickleBookHoarder Agreed! I am also amused when the male love interest is a thinly veiled self-insert that is a fictional Casanova with some sort of off-putting quirk (in this case an oft-described penchant for wearing "dirty buckskins" with no socks) 10mo

I love John Grisham books and have read everything he has published. This is yet another in the recent line of “must be wrapped up in x number of pages”. I‘ll kee reading them but I miss the glory days of The Pelican Brief and The Runaway Jury and A Time To Kill. They are just great ideas wrapped up in a neat little package with forgettable characters. I thought this one had more promise than any other recent entries, it just fell flat.

Reagan-reads Sorry this was poorly worded, the newer books are good ideas with poor follow through and forgettable characters. I loved the earlier books and they really kept me on the edge of my seat, they were memorable, and they were really smart. The newer ones... I forget if I have read them or not, they do not stick with me at all. 1y

Wow. What a mess. It barely scrapes by with the one star only because I was very mildly interested in where the manuscripts were going to end up. The plot makes zero sense. The characters are flat and unrealistic. Has Grisham written women before? This is my first Grisham, so I legit don't know. But he does a terrible job here. I think his editor is equally to blame.

knittedgnome That's such a bummer. I usually like John Grisham. Can't remember him having a woman main character. 1y
wanderinglynn I liked the early John Grisham books (like A Time to Kill). But after his books started being adapted into movies, I think the quality of his writing went down. 1y

John Grisham was my first introduction to adult fiction, so even though I prefer more literary fiction now, I am always to see a new Grisham show up on Hoopla. This one involves a bookstore and a rare book heist for a fun read.

Day 3: Favorite Author
I had a really hard time choosing a fav author for today‘s #photochallenge, but after much turmoil I finally decided on John Grisham. His books were the some of the first adult books I started reading as a teen and still enjoy today. Also bonus!-he is one of the few authors my husband and I agree on and can read together 📖💑

amber_ldsmom I started reading his stuff at a young age, too. Mostly because my mom was a huge bookworm and I would constantly read over her shoulder. 😉 1y
TheFunkyBookworm @amber_ldsmom yes me too! I pretty much just read whatever was around the house... which also included a lot of Nora Roberts and Danielle Steele 😂 1y
amber_ldsmom We had a TON of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, which obviously put me on the R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike path, lol. 1y

I knew very little about collecting rare books and this was interesting insight into that glamorous world! The debonair book store owner was too much of a narcissist for me, but it‘s hard not to have a soft spot for someone so passionate about books! Once again, I pondered is Grisham modeling this character after himself? 🤔

Have not read a lot of John Grisham in recent years but can say this was a different book for him- it focused on the heist of original F Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts from the Yale library and the plot to locate them & get them back. It was interesting because it focused on the world of bookstores, authors, & rare books. It wasn't my favorite by him but it was an enjoyable read.

mcipher That sounds like a lot of fun. 👍 2y
