An Enchantment of Ravens
An Enchantment of Ravens | Margaret Rogerson
A skilled painter must stand up to the ancient power of the faerie courtseven as she falls in love with a faerie princein this gorgeous debut novel. Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobels paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patronRook, the autumn princeshe makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyesa weakness that could cost him his life. Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild Hunts ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then loveand that love violates the fair folks ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.

After loving Rogerson‘s second novel, I was excited to start listening to her debut! And it definitely has a lot of great characters and some terrific imagery like her second book... but, I just didn‘t like it quite as much! I think it‘s partly because I am just not a big fan of fairies... and partly because I never really felt that invested in the romance- but the audio is well-performed and it‘s certainly action-packed! #AudioColoring

emtobiasz Yeah, I loved her second book but have tried several times to read this one, and never made it past 100 pages... 🤷‍♀️ 3w
TorieStorieS @emtobiasz Yeah- this one has some really great moments, but it didn‘t hook me in the same way. I also really like the audio performance so I think that also helped! 3w

Why didn't I read any reviews beforehand?

Reminded me of ACOTAR (👇) BUT the writing was much better, although there were quite a lot of trees in this one too.

Portrait painter Isobel is kidnapped by Rook, the Fae prince of the Autumn Court, for a relatively lame reason. They start a trek through the Fae world on their way to Isobel's trial at the Autumn Court.
Of course our level-headed heroine turns into a mushy lump within minutes, she's enthralled by Rook, who's equally enchanted by her.

Lots of trees and leaves on the trek. Reminds me a lot of A Court Of Thorns And Roses.

YA fantasy #romance

Sweetkokoro I have been interested in this book based solely on the cover, I think it‘s gorgeous but your description has made me lose all interest XD I know for a fact I will hate now haha. Thank you for saving me the time. 1mo
julesG @Sweetkokoro Was drawn in by the cover, too. Thought it's going to be a cool fantasy story with a strong heroine, but it truly reads like a slightly better written ACOTAR. 1mo

I really liked this! I really enjoyed sorcery of thorns so picked this up after listening to an interview with the author on the B&N YA podcast (love it). It‘s a bit bizzarre to read a fantasy these days which isn‘t building into being an epic trilogy but still, I found the characters likeable and the plot gripping. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Absolutely adored the story and characters. Rook was endearingly awkward on so many occasions. Isobel is smart and capable and stayed true to herself all throughout. I loved the uniqueness of the goat twins and how the Fae are portrayed. Highly recommend all her books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Would you like to know the greatest secret of fairykind? We prefer to pretend otherwise, but truly, we have never been the immortal ones. We may live long enough to see the world change, but we‘re never the ones who changed it. When we finally reach the end, we are unloved and alone, and leave nothing behind, not even our name chiseled on a stone slab. And yet—mortals, through their works, their Craft, are remembered forever.”

This book was very refined and a specific audience can enjoy this with all their hearts. I wasn‘t apart of that targeted audience. There was a regal atmosphere and I truly appreciated the details and the lore. Just. That romance.
Was the hardest thing I ever had to swallow.
The potential turned into cliches at the end, another thing that killed it for me. But I do recommend!

I enjoyed this fresh take on a good old fashioned fairy story, particularly the unique portrayal of the fae and their relationship to mortals. I would have liked a bit more fleshing out of the romance, though. In general it could have stood to be longer to give events more time to unfold naturally and comprehensibly to the reader. ⭐⭐⭐1/2 Out of ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

This book honestly didn‘t impress me that much. Some of the plot was a bit rushed or confusing at the times, and the romance was a bit insta-love for my taste. Even though the book description was intriguing and there were parts that were entertaining, this one fell a bit short and I didn‘t enjoy it that much.

A FAEtastic adventure! I'm not big on fairies or fae (as it seems they have been overused) but I loved this. Rogerson's writing swept me into the story and I wanted more. From the witty, stubborn, fiery tempered MC to the explanations of the lands, the author made it feel tangible. This was a solid 4.5 stars, almost 5 which is very rare for me. I would definitely read a sequel if there was one, and I will read other work by this author.

This was...fine. It had some creepy Twilight-esque notes but the logic of the universe‘s magic was interesting. There are fairies and humans. Fairies can do magic and humans can do craft, they can make things. Fairies can‘t make things. Trying to cook, or sew, or paint will hurt a fairy.

Jeralyn I agree with u completely, I didn't fall in love with it but it definitely had some cool aspects to it 9mo

Good world building, very unique magical aspects added to it, but the insta-love was personally too much for my taste. It was a relatively shorter book and although I would definitely call it a decent book overall, it didn't capture my attention as much as I thought it would.

So, I flat out LOVED this book. I made the mistake of starting it before bed on Sunday and I was up until 3am reading. An Enchantment of Ravens grabbed me from the very first page. Isobel‘s independence and firm sense of self were refreshing, and Rook‘s “declarations” were adorable. I loved everything about this book and I HIGHLY recommend it for fantasy and faerie story fans.

This book ended up being a bit “meh” for me. I think part of the problem is that I read it too close to reading the ACOTAR series, so I kept the worlds mixed up, but I also didn‘t like the ending. I won‘t say specifically why, because *spoilers,* but it used a plot that tends to completely ruin books for me. That said, the writing was still very good, and so was most of the story, so consider reading it because it certainly wasn‘t terrible.

The romance seemed fake, too forced. I wouldn't recommend it.

Stayed up past midnight finishing this book last night. Overall I loved it. Her wording is lovely and the descriptions felt like poetry. I didn't always agree with the main character, I felt she was a bit self righteous. Certain parts of the book felt rushed. But then there were those gorgeous, well thought out sections and they totally won me over. I'll miss the Spring Court. It was the perfect farie palace.

Sometimes, you're just glad it's over. Sad, bc I liked the characters and world building. But the romance was terrible! I hate that people think that love works like that. They meet and suddenly they would do anything for each other, even though they've only spent a few days together. Give me a break! That isn't what love looks like, and media that paint it as such is part of the reason the divorce rate is as high as it is.

LaraCroft Boy oh boy, are we being realistic! ! XD but you can't deny that the writing style and the characters' descriptions, not to mention the concept of the enchantments themselves, were really good and very imagination-stimulating ^^ 1y

I'm a little over halfway through this book, and I'm not super impressed. The relationship between the main characters bothers me a lot. They flippantly talk about being "in love," but it's more than clear that they are really just in lust, and so their big dilemma about whether or not to be together doesn't mean much to me.More, teen books that treat love this way contribute to people's messed up perceptions of what it means to love someone.

As a whole, I really enjoyed this one. It was an interesting take on the fae and all of the setting descriptions reminded me of the elves‘ homes in the Lord of the Rings movies. So that was fun! My only issue was that I thought the romance and some of the characters could have been more developed to make it a little more believable.
