The Hero and the Crown
The Hero and the Crown | Robin McKinley
28 posts | 69 read | 37 to read
Robin McKinley's mesmerizing history of Damar is the stuff that legends are made of. The Hero and the Crown is a dazzling "prequel" to The Blue Sword.Aerin is the only child of the king of Damar, and should be his rightful heir. But she is also the daughter of a witchwoman of the North, who died when she was born, and the Damarians cannot trust her.But Aerin's destiny is greater than her father's people know, for it leads her to battle with Maur, the Black Dragon, and into the wilder Damarian Hills, where she meets the wizard Luthe. It is he who at last tells her the truth about her mother, and he also gives over to her hand the Blue Sword, Gonturan. But such gifts as these bear a great price, a price Aerin only begins to realize when she faces the evil mage, Agsded, who has seized the Hero's Crown, greatest treasure and secret strength of Damar.

I just finished this book. Two friends from book club were gushing over it and told me that a horse plays a big part in the story so I had to read it.
It was really a fun adventure - as you can see from the cover, it‘s just a girl and her horse slaying dragons. It‘s an excellent girl power fantasy story.

I am so happy to have the chance to read #20in4 - these are my last days of freedom before I go back to school. I want to finish up the tagged book, but I‘m not positive what I‘ll read next. I‘ve got it narrowed down to 3 books.
Who else is joining in?
Thanks for hosting @Andrew65 !

Andrew65 I tend to choose a few books that I might read and then decide out of these what I read based on my mood at that time. Good luck 😊👍 3y
PaperbackPirate Thank you @Andrew65 ! Off to a good start! 📚 3y
bthegood I“m in - I'm reading 3 chunksters (enjoying them but they are all long) so I need this boost! 3y
PaperbackPirate @bthegood Good luck! Chunksters hold me back too. I‘m a slow reader. 3y
bthegood @PaperbackPirate turns out they hold me back too - so giving up two of them for now (back on the TBR shelf) to read some shorter books! 😂 3y

My aunt recommended this to me as a teen but I don‘t remember reading it. Parts seemed familiar, but they may be from other works. Aerin is a believable hero, who feels unworthy of her royal blood and decides to prove herself. It was slow going in places but worthwhile. An older MG/younger YA, one down for #MGMarch. Next up is a quick read from one of kiddo‘s favorite series.

1. Not the most recent, but it‘s definitely the one I have the strongest memory of wanting to throw.
2. depends on the day (It‘s possible my Type A self has a schedule.)
3. I fell down three stairs sideways into the lap of a guy during my freshman orientation with my scholarship group.
4. Dark Chocolate
5. Blue Girls
#friyayintro

BarbaraJean That is an amazing embarrassing moment story! A friend of mine in college once sat on a guy‘s lap in our Shakespeare class (dark classroom b/c we were watching a film, bright sun outside, she came in late and walked into a different row of seats than normal). She was mortified and we still laugh about it! (edited) 5y

@lauren.lerner - that was fun ☺

Leniverse Ooh, I think I have this on my Kindle. It's good then, is it? 😂 6y
llwheeler @Leniverse So good! I haven't reread it as an adult, but I really liked it as a kid. Now i want to reread it. But in general Robin McKinley is wonderful ☺ 6y
BarbaraJean Ohhhh, I love this one! 6y

Leniverse I've read one Robin McKinley. A retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I quite liked that except that the ending seemed rushed. And I have "the Hero and the Crown" and "Sunshine" in the Kindle. I've been neglecting my kindle books. ? But, question: Is the Hero and the Crown a sequel? I see it listed as Damar 2. 6y
llwheeler @Leniverse I think The Blue Sword is probably listed as 1? Yeah they are both in the same world but not direct sequels; Hero would be a prequel if anything... i read Hero and the Crown first and Blue Sword later (maybe why i love Hero just a bit more) Hero comes first chronologically in that world, but pretty sure people read them in either order 6y
Leniverse Cool, thank you! I can read Hero then and worry about Blue Sword later. 😊 6y
llwheeler @Leniverse 😊 hope you enjoy! 6y

This is definitely the oldest book from childhood at my home, though I think my parents probably still have some older ones :). It‘s still a favorite and a regular re-read! For the hour six challenge of #24in48! @24in48

Day 4 Didn't Like It, Still Finished It
An epic fantasy with political intrigue and a dragon? I should have loved this. For most of it, I was just bored. So. Much. Exposition. But I persevered because so many people love McKinley and there was supposed to be an epic dragon. Then I'm-too-sexy-for-my-magic mage dude showed up and I rolled my eyes a lot. And I kept reading. The end made me throw the book at a wall. #marchintoreading

meichner87 Your dislike of this book is still one of my favroite things ever! 7y

Chachic Ha! I didn't dislike it as much as you did but I thought this was just okay, I loved The Blue Sword but not this one. 7y

Chachic Aww that's sad. I can assure you that it's very different from this one, but I don't know if you'll like it given how much you dislike this. 7y

hollybally Yep, for the most part McKinley exposition is not for me. Though I did enjoy Sunshine. 7y

I decidedly cannot draw, but here is my picture for #drawme and @rachelm . The Hero and the Crown is one of the first books I can remember choosing for myself as a young girl, and Aerin was one of my first female heroes. I still have the book. My drawing was no doubt also influenced by the delivery of my new Zelda game today!

Having to stay up all night with a cranky teething toddler who refuses to sleep is a bummer, but at least I had this awesome recommendation from @Chachic to get me through the night! Great book, loved how it ties into the Blue Sword!

Chachic Yay, I'm glad you're enjoying it. I read this one before The Blue Sword and ended up liking the latter a lot more.📚 7y
CoffeeK8 Yes, I agree that The Blue Sword was superior but I liked how it filled in all the gaps 7y

#herebedragons I loved reading books with strong woman characters growing up and this was one of my favorites. The heroine is disliked by almost everyone from birth because they think her mother was a witch so she becomes a dragon fighter and ends up saving her country. 😄
