This Is Just My Face
This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare | Gabourey Sidibe
167 posts | 92 read | 2 reading | 212 to read
The Oscar-nominated Precious star and Empire actress delivers a much-awaited memoirwise, complex, smart, funnya version of the American experience different from anything weve read Gabourey SidibeGabby to her legion of fansskyrocketed to international fame in 2009 when she played the leading role in Lee Danielss acclaimed movie Precious. In This is Just My Face, she shares a one-of-a-kind life story in a voice as fresh and challenging as many of the unique characters shes played onscreen. With full-throttle honesty, Sidibe paints her Bed-Stuy/Harlem family life with a polygamous father and a gifted mother who supports her two children by singing in the subway. Sidibe tells the engrossing, inspiring story of her first job as a phone sex talker. And she shares her unconventional (of course!) rise to fame as a movie star, alongside a superstar cast of rich people who lived in mansions and had their own private islands and amazing careers while I lived in my mom's apartment. Sidibes memoir hits hard with self-knowing dispatches on friendship, depression, celebrity, haters, fashion, race, and weight (If I could just get the world to see me the way I see myself, she writes, would my body still be a thing you walked away thinking about?). Irreverent, hilarious, and untraditional, This Is Just My Face takes its place and fills a void on the shelf of writers from Mindy Kaling to David Sedaris to Lena Dunham.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I read the novel Push by Sapphire several years back, but wasn‘t able to finish the film “Precious” because reliving that gut-wrenching story was too much. What I did experience of Sidibe‘s performance was incredible. It turns out, she‘s a brilliant storyteller and talented writer, too. In this honest and funny memoir, she lays bare her unique family history, career, body image, etc. Fantastic on audio!

#tarottakeover Day 6: The Chariot, a card of victory, focusing intent and will, establishing identity, and confidence. Tough as many books might be spoiled if I chose them. I offer This is Just My Face as Gabourey is definitely one of confidence but she is not afraid to show her vulnerabilities and feelings, which makes this book all the more a victory. She has a strong and playful identity and continues to do well. Fun and meaningful read.

I wasn‘t expecting the humor, so this turned into a pleasant surprise. Gabourey is funny and spirited and it‘ll be interesting to see what she does next.

...fathers and sons should discuss why no one should ever be raped in the first place... (12)

GingerAntics Does this have to even be said? I would have thought that would be a given, but I suppose that‘s the problem. Father‘s think they‘ve raised good sons, but they‘ve never had this conversation (where I live they were far more concerned with only ever saying “don‘t have sex until you‘re married” and absolutely nothing else about sex). 13mo
rather_be_reading @GingerAntics when i read this i had the same exact thoughts. u just assume parents are having the important talks but i dont think they are. 13mo
GingerAntics More and more, I really don‘t think they are. I‘m sure some do - I personally know some that do - but some/a lot don‘t (in fact, I personally know some that don‘t). They feel uncomfortable, so they just don‘t have the conversations. It‘s disturbing. 13mo

This book was so funny (and truthful). Although Gabby‘s life experiences could not have been more different than mine, reading it felt like a friend was telling me her story. Yeah, I‘m pretty sure she would make a great friend. I loved this book so much, I read it over two days.

Loved this book so much. It was amazing I can‘t tell you how refreshing it is to have a real narrator who is just completely themselves. The stories had such a range of emotions. This book is definitely one of my faves thank you so much Gabourey 💜

“When someone says something negative about me, it hurts my feelings. It always has, and it probably always will. It doesn‘t hurt as much as it did when I was younger, but it still hurts. I‘ll never feel glad that someone says something awful about me. I‘ll never bask in the negative attention. It‘s ridiculous that I‘m asked to do so. I‘m a fucking human being! I‘m not weak. But I am human.”

Gabourey Sidibe lays down some truths about being a plus sized black woman in our society with loads of snark. The #audiobook, read by the actress, is the way to go. #diversenonfiction #booked2018 #collectionofessays #getreading2018 #13of36

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I want to be Gabourey Sidibe's best friend! I love her raw honesty, her humanity, her revelations. As someone who's struggled with moving toward body positivity for myself, I understand and respect her decisions and I can also understand why bopo advocates have criticized her. I'm tremendously grateful for the bopo community because with their help I've learned to love my body but sometimes they can be a bit militant in their approach..

Chelsey .. That said, what I really loved about this were her very human relationships. I feel like I got to watch her process her feelings about them through the pages of her book. It's possible to hate or mistrust your family and love them fiercely at the same time, and she demonstrated how and why. 1y
MuddyPuddle I can‘t wait to read this book, but I‘m holding off to get an audio copy, I‘d love to hear her read her story herself! 1y
Chelsey @MuddyPuddle It's worth it! I had both so I could go back and forth, but part of the charm was hearing her tell her story 1y
