How to Make White People Laugh
How to Make White People Laugh | Negin Farsad
Negin Farsad is an Iranian-American-Muslim female stand-up comedian who believes she can change the world, one joke at a time. In HOW TO MAKE WHITE PEOPLE LAUGH, Farsad shares her personal experiences growing up as the "Other" in an American culture that has no time for nuance. Writing bluntly and hilariously about the elements of race we are often too politically correct to discuss, Farsad takes a long hard look at the iconography that still shapes our concepts of "black," "white," and "Muslim" in America today and examines what it means when white culture defines the culture. Here she asks, what does it mean to have a hyphenated identity and how can we combat the racism, stereotyping, and exclusion that happens every day? HOW TO MAKE WHITE PEOPLE LAUGH tackles these questions and more with wit, humor, and incisive intellect.

I wanted to like this book way more than I liked it. I felt the author was really trying to promote her movie way more than write a meaningful book. I did enjoy her Third Person chapter and that the end of the book talked about how readers could change the world and offered suggestions on how to do so. I would say 1.5/5 stars.

Look, I'm a sucker for footnote proofs. THIS white person is laughing.

(Also, in the first 30 pages: 90210 reference, Manning Marable namedrop, visual analysis of fruit in and out of bowls, and a sentence that makes 2016 feel like a million years ago: "The desire for nuclear weaponry is the only reason Iranians are in the news!")

A snapshot of my Goodreads stats for the year. I love data and love books, so this is the perfect combo. I'm surprised How To Make White People Laugh wasn't more popular. It's such a funny book! I recommend checking it out if you missed it this year.

jessberk13 I'm also surprised that was least popular! And seeing it reminded me I never added it to my Goodreads shelf after listening to the audiobook - thanks! 7y

#unpopularopinion time: I didn't love this book. I felt it very repetitive. I listened to the audio, so her narration was definitely funny. I just think I was expecting something different, that's all. Also, the first "sidebar" was totally jarring and almost made me fall while I was showering because I jumped out of my skin!

Bookzombie I haven't read this, but I too listen to audiobooks in the shower! 😂 7y
jessberk13 @Bookzombie I bought a waterproof speaker just so I could! Between my twenty minute showers and then doing my hair, I can get a good 45 minutes in!!! 7y

Funny take on the serious issues of racism & other-ness in the US written and read by an Iranian-American Social Justice Comedian. A nice break from super serious reading, but also a funny & thoughtful look at the Muslim American experience in this country during a time when muslims are often discriminated against as being all radical, terrorists, etc.Now off to look up her TED talk. 😉 #WNDB #DiversityMonday #MulticulturalMonday #ManyStoryMonday

The first parts and the last chapter: pee-my-pants funny & brilliant: inviting, warm, and sneakily hilarious. Her tales of being an American Muslim and her bold activism keep you laughing so hard that you don't realize how deeply you're being educated: that's the sneaky part. The rest was unfunny, preachy, or cringemakingly whiney. She needs to marinate her material more, that's all. Despite my so-so review, I'm already a fan, rooting for her.

Cinfhen Nice review 8y
BookishFeminist I don't agree about the last half being whiney - did you read or listen? It came across to me like she was mocking herself, and that's not whiney IMO, more the opposite. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I do wonder if some of the later stuff is more relatable if you're a woman. She discusses a lot of sexism in those chapters that hit very close to home for me and many other women. What specifically struck you as distasteful? 8y
See All 17 Comments
shawnmooney @bookishfeminist It was the section(s) about her love life I found humorlessly whiney. I listened, didn't read. The section(s) about post-Lehman Brothers economic inequality stuff were unfunnily preachy. It's fantastic that so many readers enjoyed more of the book than I did. The parts I loved I really loved, though! 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney The stuff about her love life I didn't find whiney at all- I encourage you to challenge your perspective a bit. You don't have to change your mind but I'm sensing a disconnect bc you couldn't relate maybe, but a lot of it hits home & is very frustrating and tbh worth whining about, but I don't think that's what she was doing. I can see why the economic stuff came off as preachy yet maybe you have more insight about it than most? 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney Don't mean to be too challenging here but you probably saw this coming, lol. 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I could relate to some of her romantic disappointment, altho not the interracial part, at least not from the non-white side. My overall point is that this and the Bernie Sanders stuff wasn't funny, at least not to me. Humor is totally subjective, of course, but the absence of humor was jarring & disappointing compared to how perfectly I thought she blended everything in the other sections. IMHO :) 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney lol, you are quite the book curmudgeon sometimes. 😉 One of these days I'll persuade you to be optimistic about something that struck you as off & neither of us will know what to do. I can't recall what she said about the Bernie Sanders stuff specifically but I enjoyed that she didn't feel the need to be perfectly funny all the time since it's a memoir & she's more than a comedian. But I sill found 90% funny unless she was profound. 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I just saw your other short comment - lol - challenge away! I need to be kept on my toes and love the invigorating back-and-forth! 💚💙💜 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney ❤️❤️ lol 8y
shawnmooney I will playfully take issue with the "curmudgeon" moniker – certainly as I get older, I am getting crankier & more critical (I will insist that at least a tiny fraction of that is discernment) - I suspect something least a bit similar will happen for you later on too? - but wouldn't a veritable curmudgeon simply say "The book sucked..."...end of story? :-) I don't think I ever do that. ? 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist Forgot to tag ya 8y
BookishFeminist 🙄 ok you get an eye roll for this, lol. In all seriousness tho I hope I didn't offend- I simply meant it playfully, and didn't intend it to do with age at all. I call my younger brother a curmudgeon. :) I highly doubt that I'll get crankier when I'm older if my parents are any indicator. Criticism doesn't have to come without keeping an open mind! Simply trying to see if you'll push past the pessimism I sense & see things as less absolute. 💕 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist It's fascinating getting to know each other almost solely through our reactions to books. I am anything but a pessimistic person, though; so you haven't quite got that piece of me yet. :-) I approach each and every book wide-eyed and expecting nothing but a masterpiece. I am sometimes deeply disappointed. Stay tuned for a even more negative, probably scathing review of 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist (and of course no offense taken on any level, and certainly not related to the fact that I'm old enough to be your great great grandfather… LOL) 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney ?? I'm side eyeing you real hard for "I'm anything but a pessimistic person but stay tuned for scathing reviews." Lol. I feel you're taking this more seriously than I intended this to go so I'm sorry if I offended (even if you say you aren't)—is there anything wrong?? 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist Lol. Nope! Life is beautiful, and so are we! 💗💗💗 8y

The FUNNIEST book I've ever read, incl. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, & Mindy Kaling combined. Farsad is Iranian-American & a "social justice comedian." Chapter 11 on TED talks and how much white people love public assembly was probably my favorite section. There's a lot to choose from in the menu of intersectional politics here, and thus a lot to love/like/admire/be entertained by/be reminded you have some ally work to do around/bookmark to use in future internet discourse.
