Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are
Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are | Bren Brown
Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, "What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?" In "The Gifts of Imperfection," Brene Brown, PhD, a leading expert on shame, authenticity and belonging, shares what she's learned from a decade of research on the power of "Wholehearted Living"--a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness. In her ten guideposts, Brown engages our minds, hearts, and spirits as she explores how we can cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, "No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough, " and to go to bed at night thinking, "Yes, I am sometimes afraid, but I am also brave. And, yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable, but that doesn't change the truth that I am worthy of love and belonging.""

This review is for a spin-off of this book "the gift of imperfect parenting. Brené is so Brené! I came across a couple of these "sessions" on Hoopla and dove in. Who couldn't use a couple of hours of wholeheartedness. I loved this one mostly because how relevant it is to me now in this point of my personal and professional life. Highly recommended for any parent or anyone who knows a kid or was once a kid.

I sporadically read self-help books, and this trio has been on my TBR shelf for a really long time. Eventually I‘ll get to it!

Not the tagged book, but one focused on parenting. Believe this was originally two lectures that was published as a book. This short audiobook lays out some principles of parenting in an easy to implement manner. Talks about guilt vs shame; healthy striving vs seeking perfection; being vulnerable; allowing your kids to see that you too struggle and are imperfect; setting boundaries; practicing gratitude and play. Lots of useful advice.

My edition – meaning: the edition my online library has – advertises it as being in large parts about perfection and how that attitude does us no good.

But it‘s in large parts about shame. And it‘s really late in the book that Brown explains that shame and perfection are two sides of the same medal. Yes, I _can_ believe that but I wish they would market it differently or she would have given this topic more space much earlier in the book.

After about 30 pages I figured it‘s completely sufficient to just skim it.

I liked the idea but the content can‘t keep what cover and marketing blurb promise.

It‘s repetitive. It lacked of hands-on advices. (Which is mean to say because it‘s almost impossible to give such in that field. But … 🤷🏽‍♀️)
For me, it was all too general – even though I was surprised how much I often behave as recommended.

⚠️ The German translation is bollocks‼️

“Let go what you‘re thinking that you need to be and embrace what you are. Live life from/with all your heart.“

🤷🏽‍♀️🙄😂🤭

⬆️⬆️⬆️ Yeah, I absolutely know where she‘s aiming to but it‘s that kind of emotionalism that in 9 of 10 times makes me give those self-help books a wide berth. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Well, Littens, you know this … Yesterday you‘ve been wondering what to read and overnight some of your hold-on‘s are available – plus you find some interesting reads and audiobooks just by browsing your online library‘s catalogue. ☺️

I think it‘s once more time for #BookNerdProblems.

I found one of Brené Brown‘s books in the feed of @I_Like_Big_Books – and thought I give the author a try. By the middle of July it will be available to me from the online library.

It‘s about perfection and requirements concerning ourselves, I think.

Litsy won't seem to let me add The Gifts of Imperfect Parenting since the title is so similar to Brene's original book. No biggie. This was a short one I picked up during the #audible Mother's Day sale. I'm really liking Brene's work so far and I'm looking forward to reading more from her. I've watched pieces of her Netflix special and I swear, at certain points, I felt she was talking about me! #parenting #selfhelp

Recommended to me as I struggle with my perfectionist tendencies to finish my dissertation. I love how transparent Brown is with her research and her own history - she really practices what she's preaching about discussing shame to release it's power over you! Very accessible and something I'll have to come back to.

Suggested to me by my therapist, and while some of what was read seemed like common sense, they were still truths I had a hard time putting into practice and needed to be read. I think I am just too skeptical to fully give myself over to it, took notes and we can see how some tips work out 🤷‍♀️ It wasn‘t bad but didn‘t find it life changing either.

BethM I felt the same and was recommended by my therapist as well. Her other books are much better and I found easier to accept. Im definitely a convert now but still don't love this one. 10mo

I read the book & was not impressed. I found reviews to nail down what was rubbing me wrong. While doing so people who thumbed down the book said they bought it because of her amazing ted talk... hummmm... So having an open mind I watched this... https://youtu.be/s6xb4H5ueKs

I LIKED IT. She was funny, insightful AND relatable! Her gift is speaking. Books not so much or she needs a better editor. Editors are the unsung heroes of the book world.

Meh... This author refers to her own previous book SEVEN times in this tiny 124 page book. Most of her insites are really just common sense. And her redefining words in her own words left me more flat than inspired. I did not connect with this book at all. I'm glad I did not buy this one.

Appreciating the place that Brene was when she wrote this book, especially it being her first book, and how her interviews resonated with her. I also geek out on her research methods.

Recommending it to a friend; thinking about the ways that this booked helped me redefine my own thoughts.

Research on vulnerability and what comes from that really intrigues me, along other poorly understood abstractions of humanity.

I trust Brené Brown because she is so honest about the hard work she has to do in believing and practicing the things she‘s learned in her research, what she‘s writing and speaking about. I love her stubbornness. So many self-improvement type authors sound like it comes natural to them, but Brené Brown knows the struggle is real. This is a really clear, practical guide to embracing who you are and living a richer, more joyful life.
