Imagine having so few choices in your life because of your gender that you have to make an unspeakable deal just to experience any degree of freedom. It was because of this stage setting that I initially loved this book. And then Henry showed up. Unlike all the characters in the book who found everything they desired in Henry, I found nothing. And Addie, unfortunately, faded into the background.

Reggie There‘s this booktuber called Reading with Cindy that did a booktuber about this book and diversity and it was hilarious to me. I haven‘t read the book but she‘s always a good watch. 3y
starrdom @Reggie Thanks for that recommendation! I watched and it was great. She's right that, even beyond the possibilities for adding diversity, there were just so many missed opportunities for ALL the things that could happen over the course of 300 years. 3y

@AmyG I used to think I was a good shopper, but I bow down to you and your gifting prowess. You nailed it!!! I am so thoroughly delighted with everything I received. If all you had sent me was that Stand bookmark, I would have been over the moon. But I got so much more! Thank you @teebe for coordinating. I had never done one of these before and it was great fun. #creepychristmas

This is a great collection of short horror Manga. I love the twists and turns of a great Junji Ito story. Of course, the artwork is fantastic, too. The dust jacket is on the right, the book without jacket is on the left.

Trying to decide- stick with it or bail? I LOVED Good Lord Bird so much but I have only spent 20 minutes or so on this one and boobs have already been mentioned three times. The first mention was funny but the second and third times weren‘t so much. I get that this is all supposed to be humorous and lighthearted but it feels so frenetic and unfunny to me so far.

vivastory This is the only Mcbride I've read. I have GLB on my TBR, but frankly I thought this one was ridiculously overhyped. One of 5 novels on the NY Times 10 boty list. Seriously?!! I rated it as a pick, but it was really more of a so-so 3y
starrdom Thank you @vivastory ! I kept thinking, what am I not getting here that everyone else seems to get? I think I‘ll move on... and maybe circle back to it if the urge strikes. 3y
vivastory Good idea. There's just too many books out there! 3y
RickW This book is very NYC, in fact it is beyond that, it is very honed in to a certain aspect/place in NYC which has its own vernacular. As such it may seem very strange to people outside of that area. Additionally the book has so many layers that eventually come together. It is tedious at first but the investment is worth it. For me it‘s one of the best books I‘ve ever read. It speaks from the point of view of those who are rarely heard. 3y
starrdom @RickW that actually makes sense and would explain why it seems to resonate so strongly with others but maybe not so much to an Okie like me 😊 I appreciate the point about perspectives that are rarely heard and that makes me want to attempt circling back to it before the #TOB kicks off. 3y

Crazy Brave | Joy Harjo
post image
Pickpick

Listening to Joy Harjo‘s voice and words is a pure delight. Our nation‘s first Native American Poet Laureate delivers a beautiful memoir that is unique but also feels somewhat representative. Spending an evening in fear because the family matriarch‘s enemy is sitting outside the house in the shape of a bird? I have lived that experience too but never read anyone else recall something like it before. A gorgeous, important tale of a Native life.

Carolyn11215 My favorite book of 2019! She is phenomenally talented! 3y
Reggie Was it an owl? 3y
starrdom @Reggie it was an owl. To this day, I can‘t stand to hear or see them! 3y
Reggie I had a friend who used to live with this boyfriend she had. She knew his previous girlfriend and the gf‘s mother. She had heard that the mother was a witch but thought that was just gossip. One day he had left to work early and she left later. When she walked out of the house, she saw two owls on the electric line and she said she could hear them plain as day. The ex-gf and her mother just chatting and cackling. 3y
starrdom @Reggie that gave me chills. My grandmother had a neighbor who she believed was a witch. She said he had manifested as a stampeding horse before but more often he was a screech owl. We never heard another screech owl outside the house after he died. 3y

This short collection of pandemic-era essays was my introduction to Zadie Smith and probably wasn‘t the best place to start. Even as she mocked her own pretentiousness during one essay, there was still a cold feeling to the writing and almost a lack of understanding of the situations of people around her. I was expecting to land at a higher level of consciousness by the end and see things through a new lens but that didn‘t happen for me.

AmyG Paula, did you recieve my Creepy Christmas box? Tracking says it was delivered. 3y

I can‘t believe I am just now delving into the work of Junji Ito. This horror manga started from a crazy place (a fish with legs emerges from the ocean) and continued to get way crazier from there. I also really loved the bonus short stories at the end and appreciated the absence of typical horror tropes throughout. #feastmode @Hestapleton

I read this for the premise of a barnyard heist & because it‘s on the #tob long list. There were parts that read like Ocean‘s Eleven but with the target of the robbery being chickens instead of whatever it was they stole in Ocean‘s Eleven. There were parts that read like a multi-generational Thelma & Louise. All of this was good. But there were parts that weren‘t so engaging & I longed to settle into the parts that were. #feastmode @Hestapleton

This book started out so strong but it lost its steam for me well before the ending. Plus I had a hard time keeping the Doyles of the story straight. Those first lines 👆🏽really pulled me in right away. How I Became a Ghost takes a supernatural spin on the Choctaw Trail of Tears for young readers. The Trail of Tears is a painful, horrific chapter of Native and American history and it‘s a tough subject matter but, as a Cherokee, I am grateful to read a telling of the story at a more personal level.

I did not expect this to be the best thing I have read this year but it is. Brazen is a collection of graphic short retellings of the lives of 29 inspirational women (including Lozen as seen above). I loved Bagieu‘s artistic style but this book also really engaged my mind, leading me to seek out more information about these subjects and create playlists of the featured musical artists (Josephine Baker, Betty Davis, Sonita Alizadeh, The Shaggs).

This book spoke to me like no other guide to leadership before. The message I took from it is that it is not enough to want to lead and attain a position of authority. It is necessary to understand your motivation and lead with intent. And it‘s okay to admit that you have those ambitions while you‘re at it. Beyond being incredibly motivating, Abrams gives real, practical advice.
