There There: A novel | Tommy Orange

Today, Indigenous leaders of the Yakama and Lummi Nations called for the removal of 3 large dams on the Columbia River to restore salmon and traditional fishing grounds. The press conference occurred here, where the great Celilo Falls existed before Dalles Dam was built in 1967. #indigenouspeoplesday

BookNAround My geology professor in college said that dam(n), no matter which sense you used the word in, was always a four letter word. 3mo
SamAnne @BookNAround LOL. So true. While they have brought benefits, the consequences have been great. I‘m glad to see them being questioned. 3mo
Freespirit Great news...we build dams without thinking of the consequences. We have terrible water problems in my country at the moment. I think water security will be a huge issue in the future. 3mo

Pickpick

How appropriate that I finished this excellent fresh new dystopian tale about a Native American monster hunter on #indigenouspeoplesday! I‘ll definitely want to read the rest of the series, Maggie Hoskie is a kickass complex female protagonist and the world Rebecca Roanhorse has built is really well done.

Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay!

For a little TBR inspiration, Rebecca Roanhorse published this list of five Indigenous speculative fiction authors you should be reading: https://www.tor.com/2018/06/27/five-indigenous-speculative-fiction-authors-you-s...

Robothugs Ohh thank you so much for posting this list! 1y

I‘ve been reading this one forever and it‘s so difficult to grasp the depth of the horrors committed. #indigenouspeoplesday

Suzze I bought this awhile ago, and, today being Indigenous People‘s Day, I think it‘s a perfect day to dive in. Thanks for the reminder. 1y

A Coyote Columbus Story | Thomas King, William Kent Monkman

These are the two #nativeandindigenousreads I happen to have out of the library right now. I had to read A Coyote Columbus Story to my kids so they could get a Native American author‘s deconstruction of the Columbus myth, and Red Cloud simply because the beauty of the illustrations caught my eye. #riotgrams #whythehelliscolumbusdaystillathing #indigenouspeoplesday

Pickpick

I learned about this book from @lindy and really enjoyed it, autobiographical fiction of life "on the rez." The author grew up on the Okanese First Nation, and many of these stories are about her school years in Saskatchewan. The details, the humor, the clear child's naive voice are all so strong and lend themselves to a great read. And perfect for #indigenouspeoplesday

Lindy I'm so glad that you enjoyed this. 😊Dumont has a new book out that I haven't yet read: 2y

#HappyIndigenousPeoplesDay!

If you‘re looking for the perfect read for #indigenouspeoplesday, I highly recommend WHEREAS by Layli Long Soldier, which is a finalist for the #NationalBookAward. I have no words for how beautiful and meaningful this collection is. Just read it. Think about it. You won‘t be same.
