Words of Radiance
Words of Radiance | Brandon Sanderson
Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive sequence began in 2010 with the New York Times bestseller The Way of Kings. Now, the eagerly anticipated Words of Radiance continues the epic story and answers many of your questions.Six years ago, the Assassin in White, a hireling of the inscrutable Parshendi, assassinated the Alethi king on the very night a treaty between men and Parshendi was being celebrated. So began the Vengeance Pact among the highprinces of Alethkar and the War of Reckoning against the Parshendi. Now the Assassin is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives.Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl.Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined.Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable. The doors of the Stormlight Archive first opened to us with The Way of Kings. Read that book now available in all formats and then Words of Radiance, and you can be part of the adventure every dazzling step of the way.

I didn‘t enjoy this quite as much as Way of Kings but it was still a great novel. I felt overwhelmed at times with the world building. Shallan also drove me insane during this book.

This was phenomenal. I enjoyed book 1, but like all epic fantasy book 1‘s, it was heavy on world building and introduction of characters, so it took a long time to get to the action. This is 1300 pages of action and amazing characters. This is a beautiful high fantasy world and this book is added to my favorite reads of all time. I am a full on Sanderson fan now! 5⭐️

I did a little book shopping today. It feels like it‘s been forever since I set foot into a bookstore. I went in for Words of Radiance but I got distracted along the way.

I‘ve been wanting Deserter for awhile but I‘ve never heard of The Haunted Bookstore. Let me know in the comments if you‘ve read it. I‘d love to hear some reviews.

I DNFed this the first time. When I picked it back up, I tried it in another format, the GraphicAudio edition.

The format itself added a great deal to my enjoyment. It is full-cast with sound effects and music worthy of a film. I also found that characters to whom I'd previously been indifferent evolved into people I could invest in. On top of that, new characters were introduced who fascinated me. At the end, I literally screamed with delight.

Even though, in my humble opinion, the series subsequently goes downhill, Words of Radiance is my June pick for #12booksof2021.

I'm still reading Rhythm of War and how I feel at the end of it will determine whether I continue with the series.

Words of Radiance, however, did what I love about Sanderson's books... it crescendo-ed! The action built and built and left me wanting more at the end.

Also, I like the pictures 😄

kplovesbooks This book was SO good!!! I need to finish this series but I feel like I have to reread this first! 6mo
RaeLovesToRead @kplovesbooks For me, the series has gone up and down... This and the first one both had fantastic action in the last quarter (and usually fantasy books start well, but fizzle, so this is a big bonus!) I've still got about 1000 paged of Rhythm of War left to go! 😅 6mo
kplovesbooks @RaeLovesToRead Hopefully it picks back up! This doesn't give me hope to reread and continue the series! 😂 6mo
See All 10 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @kplovesbooks Don't despair! Lots of Littens absolutely love the whole series. I'm definitely in the minority 😊 6mo
kplovesbooks @RaeLovesToRead 1000 page books DO make me despair though!! 😂😂 6mo
vivastory I have only read The Way of Kings, which I loved. I had an eye exam a couple of weeks ago & had a nice long conversation about books with the employee who was helping me. He said that he really disliked Rhythm of War. I hope that's a minority opinion though 6mo
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I feel a bit guilty for not being completely in love with Sanderson's work. The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance both ended in some great action sequences (although I did find getting there a bit of a slog). I'd give them both 7/10 - rounded up to 4*. Oathbringer was all over the place structurally and it's too early to tell with Rhythm of War. If GR reviews are anything to go off, his fans are not at all disappointed. 6mo
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory Also, it was still the best book I read in June! 😊😁 6mo
vivastory I hope to read Words of Radiance soonish. I did love Mistborn. It's one of my favorite trilogies of all time. 6mo
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I've got the first Mistborn on my shelf but first I need to find out what happens to Fitz and the Fool and before I do that I'll probably read The Liveship Trilogy... 6mo

I freaking loved The Way of Kings, but I loved this even more. This follows right after the first book. There was a lot of oh crap moments, some plot twists, humor, and just a lot of character growth. Soooo good. Pick this series up!!!

I didn't rate the first 40% but once I got to know all the characters again, I can safely say that Words of Radiance was pretty epic. Some of the most complex lore-building I've come across in fantasy, lots of action, excellent illustrations and kept me on my toes 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Now for Oathbringer... 😀😁

I had a productive reading month in May considering I‘d just started my job at that time but weekends were helpful and with the wonder that is audio books I was still doing at least a book a day. I‘m slowly making my way through the Stormlight Archive series and it is so good.
Some really good reads and some not so much, overall a great month though.

Fellow readers: does this one get better?

I'm nearly a third of the way through Words of Radiance and I'm still waiting for it to grab me. I liked (but didn't love) The Way of Kings so thought I'd carry on with the series.

It usually takes me a while to get into a fantasy world, but it doesn't seem to be capturing my imagination in the same way that, say, a Robin Hobb or George R.R. Martin book would.

I'll read on and see what happens!

DaveGreen7777 I did feel this one got better as it went along, and the third book is actually my favorite in the series so far. Hope this helps! 😁 13mo
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Thank you, Dave! There's a lot of hopping about at the moment and I think I've left it a bit long after reading the first. I will persevere!! Hopefully I'll get more into it and read the rest of the series... 😊 13mo

The first book was filled with so much world building that it was hard to keep track of everyone. The second book was incredible because you‘re already fully immersed in the lives of all the characters and now they are finally interacting! I love Shallon‘s story. This book brings together so many of the plot lines that have been building. So many questions are answered. Now I can‘t wait to read the next one!

I enjoyed this second book from the Stormlight Archive just as much as I enjoyed the first and I‘ll begin the third book soon. Wonderful progression of the story, and the character development continues to satisfy.

Bit more warfare oriented, but didn‘t lose my interest. I enjoy the Interludes — it will be fun to see if those minor characters become major. And ... Wit, the Shakespeare-like clown, is one of my favorite people/creatures.

DNF at page 246. Right now I'm not sure if this is a permanent DNF or just a pause.

1) See comments under spoiler tag.

2) This is disturbing: "Using a fetching face to make men do as you wish is no different from a man using muscle to force a woman to his will, she'd said. Both are base, and both will fail a person as you age." If you don't know why it's disturbing, I wouldn't want to be left alone with you.

Zoes_Human My favorite character has been killed and she was the only reason I started the second book at all. The worldbuilding is tremendous, but after some 1400 pages that was the only character I was invested in. 2y

Da fuq is this shit, Sanderson?

Men can, in fact, say no to seduction. A man using muscle to force someone to their will is an act of violence. Flirting to get what you want is a form of manipulation. There's a big fucking difference between the two—choice.

What can i say, this book is as good as it gets! Although each of the books in the SLA is a chunkster worth over 1000 pages, the story and the language is an easy read but so well written. Amazing world and magic system which is not so over the top, not too complex political intrigues and what amazing character building. But somehow I m finding shallan a bit too arrogant and Navami‘s indifference to her own king son is a bit weird.

I literally binged the first one so I was glad to have the foresight to buy book 2 at the same time (always a risky choice when you start a series).

This sequel did not disappoint. I loved keeping up with the characters from Book 1. Some snippets are clearly there for a larger purpose and will not make sense till i‘ve read the next one but that‘s fine by me. I binged again, read it in 3 days.

Somehow, this novel manages to be astonishing even as I get accustomed to Sanderson‘s high quality work. I loved it, it is a fantastic second chapter to the Stormlight Archive and I couldn‘t help but read it late into the night when I really ought to have been sleeping. But who could sleep when there is honor and hope, treachery and foreboding, and characters who feel so real they could be human? I was on the edge of my seat, loving every word.
