Ophelia has become Vice-storyteller to Farouk, the ancestral Spirit of the Pole. Now that her powers - and the threat they present - are known to all, she is forced to reveal the nefarious plots that have been brewing in Citaceleste and to throw herself into the political machinations of the Pole. In this perilous situation, the only person she may be able to trust is Thorn, her enigmatic fiance. As one after another influential courtier vanishes in suspicious circumstances, Ophelia again finds herself unintentionally implicated in an investigation that will lead her to see beyond the Pole's many illusions to the heat of the formidable truth.

#WondrousWednesday @eggs
Bit late but I like this prompt!
1.Tagged book.I would NOT recommend this series though, completely horrible.Very surprising this has got so many good reviews with terrible characterization and a really boring plot.
2.I think His Dark Materials had many interesting character names!Lady Salmakia being one of them!

Eggs Thanks for playing 🥳📚🙏🏻 7mo

I love so much peculiar characters and this book has so many. It was so much easier to read this than the first one: now characters and world were familiar.

Atmosphere was again so amazing and the world unique, I loved being back.

I think this could have been slightly shorter but I am still happy about action that this book had compared with the first book.

Considering that I just finished Terciel & Elinor, the prequel to Sabriel, and was salivating for some similar semi-magical slightly-steampunk world building, these options seem particularly on par… #bookspin #doublebookspin

Oooh, it was a good one! Dynamic plot, just the right dose of mysteries and delicious slow burner romance. Can‘t wait to see where the story goes from here! Oh, and the translation has improved considerably too.

This book had me switching from “wait, what‘s going on?” to moved to tears in mere moments, several times. Also, for some reason Farouk reminds me of the movie version of the Nome King.

#JulyJourneys Day 14: For #BastilleDay here is a YA fantasy series from France. As I noted in my review: it was a pleasant experience escaping into this world of arks, mirror-visitors, animists, and ancient gods and mortals. I am avidly looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series. Here is the rest: https://wp.me/pDlzr-mF7

4.6 🌟 Never so eager to read supposedly engaged couple, forcefully at that, to fall into each other. Mygod what can I say about a book that turn you upside down after that ending? Such cliffhanger.

Better than 1st book, still no romance for about 98% of the book *hah*, but the story arch is very interesting, the mystery and hidden histories keep me on the edge.

I am still not quite understanding all of the religious themes and the connection between “God” and the Family Spirits. It really feels like a hodgepodge of Philip Pullman‘s “His Dark Materials” and Diana Wynne Jones‘ “Howl‘s Moving Castle”.

Guys, I did it! I read all five books on my shelf by the end of May. Even with one day to spare! And now I'm off to pre-order the third book in this series because it's so good!

Total - 1,692/1,692 pages

I loved the first book in this quartet and this second book did not disappoint. I loved where Dabos took the story and expanded the Pole. The third book is supposed to come out this fall and I can‘t wait to get my hands on it. I want to know what happens with Ophelia, Mr Thorn, Aunt Rosaline, Berenilde, Archibald and Ophelia‘s family.

I forgave the convoluted sentences (“Just from breathing in the smell of ancient paper, with which the archivist‘s pullover was impregnated, and hearing that voice vibrating with rough affection and old dialect, Ophelia could feel her eyes smarting.”) because I was fully invested in the characters & zoomed through vol 1 & 2 of this quartet. Now I must wait for the sequels. #translation of this whimsical French YA fantasy is by Hildegarde Serle.

GatheringBooks Are there four books in total? I thought there were only 3!!! 3y
Lindy @GatheringBooks The third was published in English in September 2020. Volume 4 came out in French last year but hasn‘t yet been translated to English. 3y

Dreamscape Media has released some excellent audio productions since their start 20 years ago—Milkman by Anna Burns is an example. Unfortunately, both of the audiobooks in the tagged series are available on OverDrive in a sloppy state. Narrator Emma Fenney has at least a half dozen retakes on each book that haven‘t been cut. Annoying.
BTW Brad Rose was on the money as quoted in the Publisher‘s Weekly article above: lots of growth in audiobooks.

ReadingEnvy I have encountered some audiobooks that do less editing than I do for a podcast episode. No excuse. 4y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy It‘s true that there‘s no excuse. Audiobooks are expensive to purchase, so it isn‘t too much to expect they be properly edited. 4y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy I think the worst one I've encountered is The Golden Compass. 4y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy What a shame! That‘s a book that especially deserves respectful editing, since it will be popular for a long time. I listened to books 1 and 2 of The Book of Dust with no complaints. 4y

He gazed at Berenilde, uttering not a word, but Ophelia sensed that in their silence there was much more than in all the conversations in the world.
🙄[Please spare me the romantic hyperbole.]

Mogoeg These covers are INCREDIBLE, just out of this world, and I really wanted to love the books, but I just couldn't get through the first one! 4y
Lindy @Mogoeg There are flaws, but the world and the characters captured my interest, so I went directly from volume 1 into volume 2. 4y
Mogoeg Hmmm, maybe I should give it another try! 😄 4y
Lindy @Mogoeg At some other time, they might strike the right note for you. Meanwhile, I‘m sorry that I must wait until May for volume 3. 😊 4y

A little overwhelmed... similar to my experience reading Angel Sanctuary by Kaori Yuki. Some things are revealed but I have even more questions now.

I utterly LOVED this book. It was the perfect continuation from the incredible first book. This unique world is so fascinating and I just adore the whimsical writing and characters. It has such an epic build up and the pacing just flows, even though it is completely action packed! I am so antsy to get my hands on the third book once it is translated!

DuckOfDoom Oh I saw this so often at my bookshop. I think I will buy the translated German version of the first book when I next visit, I heard many good things about it 4y
sparrowssavvy @DuckOfDoom I highly recommend this series! I‘m so eager to read the next two, I‘m debating buying the original French versions and attempting to muddle through 4y

Rating-5/5 Stars
Received this as an arc from Netgalley and was super excited to read it because I loved A Winter‘s Promise, which was one of my favorites of 2018. This sequel, was amazing and I devoured all 540 pages of it. Christelle Dabos has an enchanting writing style that sucks you in seems elegant. Highly recommend this series!
