I have to admit part of why I celebrate #BannedBooksWeek is that it makes me feel like a Rebellious Teenager again sneaking books past my mother.

But having grown up in home that thought the only thing you needed to read was the Bible and religious literature I know the importance of Books to open your mind to new ideas and other people's stories.

GingerAntics It breaks my heart to think of all the great literature kids miss in homes like these. Ugh. I‘m so glad you snuck other books. 3y

Read this earlier in year as part of my Challenge to read anything on the @AmericanLibraryAssociation Top 10 Challenged List for 2019 that I hadn't read.
I just adored it. 🥰

"once we get to know individuals who may be different from ourselves, it is less likely we will be wary of them."
And with that I finish my Challenge of reading anything I hadn't read on this year‘s @AmericanLibraryAssociation List. ✊

"Because it doesn't matter if you love a girl bunny or a boy bunny, or eat your sandwich backward or forward. Stink bugs are temporary. Love is Forever." ❤

Much like these Rebel Spider Lilies who jumped the fence; I don't like being told what to do. So I'm always excited for Banned Books Week. Celebrate The Freedom to Read Sep 27 - Oct 3. I'll be rereading my favorite #3 and finishing up my #top10challengedbooks by reading #2 Beyond Magenta. ✊

I love banned books week. This year, it‘s from Sept 27-Oct 3. My mom never censored what I read, and I find the reasons for books being challenged/banned completely ridiculous. I‘m celebrating this year by rereading Lord of the Flies, since I bought a copy with a great cover, rereading my favorite Judy Blume novel, Tiger Eyes, and throwing in a couple of lighter graphic novels, the first Captain Underpants and Drama. 😍 #bannedbooksweek

GingerAntics I‘m going to finally read The Handmaid‘s Tale and I think I‘m going to try out And Tango Makes Three. The only reviewer who wrote anything on Apple Books gave it 5 stars but though two boy penguins “in love” was inappropriate. I guess a boy and a girl penguin “in love” is inappropriate, too. 🙄 4y
DGRachel @GingerAntics Aww, And Tango Makes Three looks adorable. I think I may have to add that one to my list, too! 4y
Sweetkokoro Captain Underpants is a banned book? Also am I just completely out of the loop, when did Lord of the Flies become a banned book? I read that in highschool for class and even had to do a presentation on it, keep in mind that was at least 10 years ago (maybe a little more I was 17) 4y

cathysaid How in the name of all that is holy did Captain Underpants land on the banned books list? I just can‘t. 4y
wanderinglynn I also love Banned Books Week! 👍🏻🙌🏻❤️📚 And I was also lucky that my parents never censored what I could read. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @cathysaid @Sweetkokoro was challenged for encouraging disobedience to parents. My great nephew reads them. I have NEVER told his very churchy parents this. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig Every year when Top 10 List is announced I try and read any that I haven't read. This year I've read Tango, Prince & Knight (which I adored)and Handmaid. All I have left is 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I too love Banned Books Week. My reason is because I was raised in a Cult. Obviously I left. It gives great joy to read books #mymotherwouldnotapprove 4y
DGRachel @Sweetkokoro @cathysaid as for Captain Underpants, @Crinoline_Laphroaig covered that. Lord of the Flies is #68 on the Top 100 most challenged/banned books between 1990-1999. I imagine it was for graphic violence. I can‘t remember if it was assigned reading in 10th or 11th grade. Let‘s just say more than 25 years ago. (Holy cow, when did I get that old 😩😩). 4y
Sweetkokoro @DGRachel I read Lord of the Flies in 2006 (my senior year) for highschool, it was 1 of 10 required reading books we got to chose from for an assignment. This is so baffling to me. And the captain underpants reason feels silly to me haha. 4y
Sweetkokoro @Crinoline_Laphroaig Thanks for the info, that honestly sounds like a really silly reason to “ban” or “challenge” a book. 4y
DGRachel @Sweetkokoro Honestly, when I read through the reasons, I find almost all of them to be completely ridiculous and some of them offensive (like ones that object to anything other than “Christian” content, or content that was critical of Christianity). One of the Sherlock Holmes stories was challenged because it portrayed Mormons in a negative light. 🙄 (edited) 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @DGRachel I just did the math. 36 years. Lord of the Flies was assigned reading Senior year. in 1984 4y
GingerAntics Lord of the Flies is such a good book. Let me guess, it was challenged/banned because kids in charge is bad? 🙄 Some people are just ridiculous. 4y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig you don‘t happen to be a Laphroig fan, do you? 😏 4y
GingerAntics @DGRachel doesn‘t it? The art looks adorable and gee, an egg with no parents finding parents to love it. What a horrible message for children. 🙄 We‘d sure hate kids to know there are loving people (or penguins) in the world. 4y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig oh wow, so glad you got out of the cult and join the book lovers. I would imagine most cults wouldn‘t want children to read as it might make them think for themselves. 4y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig I haven‘t, but I saw it on the top 10 banned books for 2019 and I think I‘m going to have to read it. 4y
DGRachel @GingerAntics according to the ALA website LOTF has been challenged for being “demoralizing inasmuch as it implies that man is little more than an animal”, for “excessive violence and bad language”, and also “because of profanity, lurid passages about sex, and statements defamatory to minorities, God, women, and the disabled”. 4y
GingerAntics @DGRachel 🤦🏼‍♀️ I seriously don‘t understand anything banned for religious reasons. If you don‘t like it, don‘t read it, but don‘t stop others from reading it if they want. Good grief. So basically the people who want LOTF banned also wants school aged boys minds/imaginations banned and science to be banned. Go figure. Smh 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics I do love my Laphroaig. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics oh there was nothing worse than thinking for yourself and asking why. 4y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig ah, Laphroaig is my favourite. 🥃 4y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig sounds like the last church I belonged to. I can‘t imagine how much worse it would be in a cult. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics a lot of people would say what I grew up in was just a religion. In fact only in the last few years have I started calling it a Cult. It had uneducated men demanding women be submissive, discouraging education, or making friends outside the church. You were supposed to blindly follow no questions asked. If you didn't you were shunned. So in my mind that makes it a cult. Books were my first rebellion. 4y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig yeah, that sounds like a cult to me. It almost sounds Amish or Mennonite. The way some (many?) of these groups treat children gets me, too. I just don‘t get how people can do that sort of thing to their own child, or children in general. Ugh. My last church was going in that direction. The pastor would contradict himself and everyone would just go with it and I needed to “pray more” when I pointed it out. 🙄 4y

Woo Hoo! I've finished my Challenge to Read everything on the 2018 Banned or Challenged List. First quiet morning at home in ages. Spent it reading #11👬.
This Day in June was the only one not available from my local Library. I bought a copy to read and donated. I'll reread Marlon Bundo during Banned Books Week. 🐰
