I do not like this book, but do not be confused by my rating. I don't like the Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury, Coraline by Gaiman, and A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, but I do recognize good chilling novels for young adults hankering for thrills.

Chika's idea of dating is different from her friends or the guys she dates. She chases the idea of being normal as she enters college and soon discovers a word that changes everything: asexual. I really enjoyed this manga. I definitely felt similarly to Chika before learning about asexuality and fell on researching it as soon as I discovered it. I like how the side characters help her expand beyond definition into deeper understanding. #LGBTQIA

PuddleJumper I enjoyed this when I read it. It was very affirming 2w
IriDas Gonna have to get this. Not many ace affirming stories out there. 2w
Kenyazero @PuddleJumper it was definitely affirming! 🤩 2w
Kenyazero @IriDas I would recommend it! Lots of care put into portraying this character's experiences. There's also some less explicitly explored aro affirmation here, explained more in the back notes but still noticable if someone's looking for it. 2w

Oh, dear, my heart. It's starts more or less like a YA novel, but with every page it turns into something else. And all of a sudden I was mile deep within the story. Now I definitely need something lighter and brighter. Perfect read for Halloween, though.

PuddleJumper Ooo sounds good 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m reading their next one now and it‘s even more so (I‘m only 60% but am so excited/curious/lowkey worried about how it‘s going to shake out) 3w
Jari-chan @PuddleJumper It's special and creepy, so yep good 😁 3w

lil1inblue I still don't know how I feel about this book. It's been about a week since I finished it. 🙃 It was a great halloween read, but I still have questions. 😂 3w
Jari-chan @lil1inblue oh yeah, so many questions 🫣 but it somehow fits the whole atmosphere 3w

Jari-chan @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yay!! 🖤🖤🖤 3w
TieDyeDude This came up in an ace group I follow as having good representation. Sounds excellent! 3w
Jari-chan @TieDyeDude It does in a sad way, which is due to the style of the book. But I was surprised to find ace rep here and could really relate. 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Jari-chan, definitely!! 3w

I'm still not sure exactly how I feel about this one. It's definitely unsettling.

Okay guys, this book? Absolutely incredible! 💕📖 Equal parts beautiful and grotesque, savage and tender, I loved every word of this book! Highly recommend!

“Do you have anyone running a Super Bowl pool up here?“ Arthur hated football but he couldn't handle another sideways promotion, even if that meant sticking his head up.

“Agent Sims used to do it, but he bashed a fax machine to death with a three-hole punch, then quit. So, that's an open position, as it were.“

I did a comfort reread to spend time with some of my favorite characters.

An ace romance that on the surface seems nothing like a romance, yet it's absolutely a romance.

“I'm sure there's a culture somewhere where silently shoving finger food at someone is an acceptable form of courting. Hobbits maybe.“
“I'm not-“
“Yes, you are and it's adorable.

Mehso-so

I enjoyed the first few hours of the book, but the rest felt pointless, repetitive, and hollow. There's some good messaging, there's an attempt at discussing mental illness, etc, as well as good LGBTQ+ rep, but it wasn't enough to keep me engaged with the novel. I found the writing good for a while, until it just started to be overdramatic and attempting to build atmosphere by throwing words around that didn't end up meaning anything.

Doppoetry The whole book felt more like it was trying to be an aesthetic instead of having any substance. The author makes an attempt at building relationships between all these characters, but it never goes anywhere. There is a bit of a fetishization of the two male MCs and their relationship. I found it a bit strange because one of them claims to be asexual, but feels more like he's a gay man trying to pretend to be asexual, which is weird because both- (edited) 2mo
Doppoetry The character and the author are asexual, but he just... feels off somehow?? I can't really put my finger on it. The Lesbian character feels a lot more solid IMO than the ace rep here, so take that with a grain of salt.

There is nothing wrong with being a teen and not being sure of your sexuality, but this feels like it tries to pander more than be genuine ace rep. (at least to me) (This also being in modern day and there's plenty of resources-)

TieDyeDude Thanks for the review. It's tough when LGBTQ+ rep feels off. Is the character just on a spot on the spectrum we aren't familiar with, or is the author mis-/uninformed? 2mo
Doppoetry @TieDyeDude he feels a bit more like a straight up Gay character than an asexual character. Its most likely because it isn't explored fully that it feels off. (edited) 2mo
Doppoetry @TieDyeDude a lot of people really love the ace rep here too so maybe it is just me as well 2mo
