#Thunderstruck #ErikLarson #BookSpinBingo

In Thunderstruck, Erik Larson tells the interwoven stories of two men; Hawley Crippen, a very unlikely murderer, and Guglielmo Marconi, the obsessive creator of wireless means of communication; whose lives intersect during one of the greatest criminal chases of all time. There is fascinating detail of Edwardian London which causes the story to start out slowly.

EadieB I'm not sure everyone will enjoy this book as much as The Devil in the White City but mid-point Larsen merges these subjects and the story finally takes off. Larson's ability to make the 1890's come alive through his research is no small fete and proves Larson to be the great writer that he is. I have read all of his books and have enjoyed all of them. If you love historical accounts of true events then you should read his books. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3y
kspenmoll I enjoy his books as well but have not read this one. Sounds good. 3y

#GetMovin #day13 #Thunderstruck The 2nd novel by Jane Harper is as governed by the weather as her 1st. Where The Dry had you tasting dust & feeling the sun baking the top of your head, Force Of Nature gives you rainforests, thunderstorms & the dripping of water in the bush. 5 women embark on a 3 day team-building hike through the Giralong Ranges but only 4 make it back out late on the last day. Searchers are hampered by the bad weather & lies.

Cinfhen Great description ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ 6y
LiteraryinLawrence Nice review! 6y
eanderson Yes!!! I love it! 6y
Dragon I just finished The Dry so I‘m definitely going to have to read this one. 👍🐉 6y
alanacristin I hadn't made the weather connection! Great point! Now I'm speculating on other weather events to transpire in future novels 😂 6y

#GetMovin #Thunderstruck

I couldn't think of a good book for this theme but I was thinking about thunder & being scared of it as a child & being told by my dad that the loud rumbling was caused by giants bowling in the hills behind our house. That made me think of Rip Van Winkle & the strangely-dressed men playing nine-pins in the mountains... & here we are. 🤔😆BTW-is the visual of giants bowling really supposed to make kids feel better?!👹🎳👹

ReadZenRites They look like nightmare lawn ornaments come to life to me 😱... and giants, you say?😳 No, that doesn‘t sound like a soothing image to me! 6y
Cinfhen Hahaha!! I like the way your mind works 6y
epsitawithane I'd read it when I was 10 6y
CaitZ We were told it was angels bowling in heaven. Not as scary as giants. 6y

#thunderstruck #getmovin The true stories in this collection have the common thread of coincidence- the kind of events where the universe suddenly seems to be looking directly at you. None are longer than a couple of pages, but all have a certain weight to them. In this one, he recounts a disastrous hiking trip at 14, when a thunderstorm strikes. A boy crawling under a metal fence in front of Auster is electrocuted and killed before his eyes.

Cinfhen That sounds life altering! 😱I‘m always amazed by these stories 6y
Centique 😱😱😱 Great description about the universe looking directly at you! 6y
Billypar @Cinfhen It's in a section called 'Why I Write'- makes sense as something that would be a formative early experience as a young writer. 6y
Billypar @Centique Thanks! Though I feel like that description was in my head from somewhere- I wish I could attribute it to whomever used it originally. 6y

I‘m sorry, but I‘m #thunderstruck that this made the list for the Great American Read. I do have to give this franchise credit, though...it certainly took many people out of their comfort zones in reading choice. I work in a very conservative county, and we couldn‘t buy enough books to fill the demand. I‘ll never forget the sheepish looks and whispered asks as people came up to the staff desk requesting a copy. #getmovin

Godmotherx5 I was disappointed by its popularity. 6y
Kappadeemom That‘s why I read it on my Kindle 😂❤️ 6y
Laughterhp I‘ve never read it and don‘t want to, but I was very surprised it made that list too! 6y

julesG @Laughterhp There have to be examples of bad writing, too. 😀 6y
Lauren_reading I‘m always happy when people read - what disappointed me was how many people thought this book was a good example of the genre...after many of my friends read it I was able to give them recommendations of really well written books in the genre - and now I have more book loving friends to talk to 😀 6y
eanderson 🤣 I am confused by this too! I‘ve had a ton of people saying I should read this book and they would act like I was wrong in not wanting to waste my time with this series. 6y
Librarybelle @Godmotherx5 @Kappadeemom @Laughterhp @julesG @LaurenReads @eanderson I read the first two in the series and hated both MCs so much that I just couldn‘t stomach the third book. As much as I am displeased to see it on the list, it also shows me that the list came from people of all different reading interests...it wasn‘t filled with classics and scholarly works. Overall, a nice sampling of popular works and classics. Though, 50 Shades...🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Cinfhen It did get people reading!! So that‘s a plus 😂 6y
TiredLibrarian The list is basically a popularity contest (see link), not a "best" list, and you have to admit it was popular! I read #1 & the writing drove me insane. But: at my library I had people who hadn't read a book in years come in asking for it, and the sequels, and then other erotica, chick lit, romance... I can't hate on a book that turned a lot of people on to the joys of reading! Re: the list http://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/about/show/ 6y
Cathythoughts Yes ! This certainly has caused a sensation. The writing was not for me .... some people think it‘s a good read 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻whatever works ! 6y
MicheleinPhilly @eanderson SOOOO many women in my office were reading this and couldn‘t understand why I wasn‘t. “But you read everything.” No, no I don‘t. 6y
Librarybelle @TiredLibrarian Please don‘t think I‘m discounting the book because I didn‘t like it! I know how much this book meant to those who loved it and brought people back into reading. As a librarian, I too saw this every day. I‘ve been greatly interested in the GAR since it was first mentioned, so I knew it wouldn‘t just be a selection of books based on what a few thought. I guess I‘m just amazed at how popular it became and still is. No offense meant! 6y
Librarybelle @Cathythoughts I think that‘s the beauty of reading - everyone can read the same book but each have a different reading experience. 6y
TiredLibrarian @Librarybelle No offense taken! 😀 Just funny how a meh book can have such a positive impact in many ways. 6y
julesG @TiredLibrarian Agree to that. The book got a lot of people reading. 6y

Mdargusch I have to say I bailed on this one @Cinfhen and @Reviewsbylola but it was two years ago, so I don‘t remember why. 🤔 6y
Cinfhen I like Erik Larson too @LeslieO but I passed on this book because the reviews weren‘t great @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola I would still read it or attempt to if I can find a library copy! He usually makes history interesting. 6y
RamsFan1963 I don't think it's his best book, Dead Wake and The Devil in The White City are much better, but it was still entertaining and informative. 6y
GripLitGrl @Cinfhen @LeslieO @Reviewsbylola @Mdargusch @RamsFan1963 i still have to get around to reading devil in the white city I've heard so many great things about the author. I think it says a lot about an author when a post strikes up a nice convo 😁 💛 6y
LeslieO @GripLitGrl @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola @Mdargusch @RamsFan1963 My favorite is Isaac's Storm. Maybe because it's the first of his I read. 6y
RamsFan1963 In The Garden of Beasts is the only Larson book I never finished. Honestly, so much has been written about Hitler and the Nazis, I just couldn't plow through another one. I know Decaprio and Scorsese are making a movie out of The Devil in The White City. I'd like to say I'm excited but I expect them to play up the serial killer part and down play the building of the World's Fair, which for me was the most interesting part. 6y
Cinfhen I agree, I love all these comments @LeslieO @GripLitGrl and I‘m looking forward to reading more Larson 6y

#getmovin #thunderstruck rhymes with the tagged book! Used this book for #Pop18 as I saw the movie first.
It tells the NYC stories of 2 deaf children, from the 20s and 70s - one told in wordless pictures and the other told in words.
The use of iconic NY museums as settings, added to the magic and wonder. This was charming and heartbreaking, as Rose and Ben navigate their silent worlds, trying to cope with loss and find connections. Just lovely!

Cinfhen Sounds wonderful and I recall the film 😃didn‘t know it was a book 6y
