This is IRL bk grp choice + I'm not sure I wd have read this otherwise so really pleased as it was a joy to immerse myself in Count Rostov's forced occupation of the Moscow metropole Hotel from 1922 to 1954. The story is gentle and the bk long but I was never bored as he meets so many different characters. I just wished I'd known what happened to nina. Perfect for;

I finished listening to this cozy mystery on my walk today. It had enough twists to keep me guessing about the culprit to the end. I liked Cleo Fox and the other characters so this is a series I'll be continuing. 1st book done for #AwesomeAugust @Andrew65

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 2y

Was hoping for a delightful read about the French countryside, but I did not enjoy the emphasis on objectifying women, excessive consumption of alcohol and the celebration of men‘s focus on money and what it can buy. One character was a bright light, the charming and creative, Ernest who was the majordoma for Simon, the ad executive. Finally, the bank heist at the end turned out to be a breath of fresh air! #booked2022 #SETINAHOTEL #192025 #1973

Librarybelle I‘ve not read anything by Mayle, though I‘ve seen a movie, I think, based on A Year in Provence. 2y
AnnR Thanks for mentioning there is sexism and other things going on in this book. I think I'll skip this one, even though I liked A Year in Provence. 2y
DivineDiana @Librarybelle I didn‘t know there was a movie! Did you enjoy it? 2y

DivineDiana @Ann_Reads I think I might be overly sensitive. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Librarybelle I honestly cannot remember, it was so long ago! The actor who starred in the Inspector Morse series was the lead in the film. That‘s about as much as I remember! 😂 2y
DivineDiana @Librarybelle I understand perfectly! 🙂 2y
Cinfhen Great review, Diana 💖 2y

This was between a pick and a so-so… the characters are a bit stereotypical, but I ultimately enjoyed the story and it‘s not badly written. Historical fiction based around a real-life murder in the Adirondacks in 1906, it‘s really more of a YA coming-of-age about a smart girl from a poor family.

This was my #SetInAHotel book for #Booked2022 and had been on my shelf waaaaay too long.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Teresereading I found it fascinating 2y

Hmm, there were a lot of things I didn‘t like about this book, aboutMolly (the maid) who finds a dead body when cleaning. The first-half portrayal of Molly felt really uncomfortable. I believe the author meant for her to be neuro-divergent but this isn‘t specifically referenced and her treatment by other characters was just nasty, certainly not the ‘ditsy‘ character and cosy mystery that I think the author was aiming for. ⬇️

squirrelbrain The second half, when Molly found allies, was better but then the ending of the ‘mystery / crime‘ was just 😡, with no clues throughout the book. The plot line with what happened to Molly‘s Gran was completely unnecessary and didn‘t fit at all, and seemed to condone what happened. 2y
DGRachel I was really worried about the characterization of Molly. My book club is reading it soon, so I‘ll be adjusting my expectations accordingly. 2y
Simona I feel the same as you about this book … 2y

Fascinating look at this hotel for women. Great detail and set against the changing role of women generally in US society. Lots of famous women discussed, including Plath, Didion and Grace Kelly.
Thanks Helen 😘

This is a fast read, but I‘m no more a fan of using neuro-divergence as a gimmick in a narrator than I was a fan of using alcohol 5 years ago. From what I found online, this isn‘t “own voices” either. I have the feeling this will be an #UnpopularOpinion, but I‘m glad this was a library book. The #audiobook narration is great, FWIW.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I keep seeing this on the “most anticipated” lists for 2022. Glad to know what you thought! (So I don‘t buy it …) 2y
Laughterhp Oh no! I assumed it was own voices 🤦‍♀️. I just got this one in the mail today from BOTM. 2y

SilversReviews LOVED this book. 2y
PatriciaU I didn‘t see the neuro divergence as a gimmick but as an integral part of the story…until the end, which I found incongruous. 2y
Megabooks @Laughterhp as best I can tell, it‘s not. I read the author‘s website and several reviews from major outlets, and it was never flagged own voices, nor did the author indicate it on her website. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen 👍🏻👍🏻 glad I could help. 2y
Megabooks @SilversReviews I‘m glad. It just wasn‘t for me. 2y
SilversReviews @Megabooks A few friends said the same thing. 2y
SilversReviews @Megabooks What are own voices and neuro divergences please? (edited) 2y
Megabooks @PatriciaU agree re: the end. I think the author felt it should have a twist, so she threw one in. Molly felt a bit wooden as a character. I read the book I‘m tagging, and its MC had some form of neurodivergence and/or trauma, and she felt much more three-dimensional to me. I guess I couldn‘t help but compare the books. But I also hope it won‘t become a frequent plot device the way alcohol was 5 years ago. (edited) 2y
Megabooks @SilversReviews “own voices” would mean that it was written by a neurodivergent author. I‘m in favor of reading own voices books when possible because they feel more authentic, and it helps diversify the authors that get books published. 2y
SilversReviews @Megabooks Thanks….I never heard of this. Appreciate the link. 2y
Ruthiella When you mention alcohol 5 years ago, do you mean like The Girl on the Train where her black outs etc. were used to further the plot? 🤔 2y
Megabooks @Ruthiella Yes that drove me nuts and also the ubiquity of alcohol-fueled MCs in mystery/thriller from 2016-2018. In this book, Molly read as wooden and I feel that her neurodivergence, rather that making her more real, was used to make her quirky and off-beat. In fact, quirky is used in a number of reviews and blurbs. It just felt more gimmick than authentic to me. 2y
Ruthiella @Megabooks Gotcha. Thanks 🙏😊 2y
BarbaraBB Another excellent review. You could do this professionally, you know that?! 2y
Cinfhen Will definitely look to #BorrowNotBuy 😁at least it fulfilled 2 prompts 🙌🏻 2y
mdemanatee So good to know. Thank you! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks! Sometimes I think I‘d enjoy doing that. 😁💜 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m curious to read what others think. It will probably be a popular book on litsy. But it‘s definitely borrow not buy imo. I just don‘t want neurodivergence to become a cheap way to make a character “quirky”. 2y
Megabooks @mdemanatee you‘re welcome! 2y
alisiakae I noticed the quirky descriptions in reviews on GR when I was looking at this book, and both that and the book blurb felt wrong to me. I probably won‘t be reading this one. Great review! 2y
Megabooks @4thhouseontheleft thanks! I don‘t think the characterization of Molly was done well at all. 2y

#PoPSummer20 #SetInAHotel Total fluff 🍦🍭🍬🍩🍭 🍬🧁but entertaining nonetheless 🧡 I‘m picturing Rhonda & Annie as Jennifer Coolidge & Diane Lane. Two single moms turn a seaside Victorian into a bed & breakfast beach hotel. This is pure SUMMER FUN 🌈☀️🌈☀️Audio narration is delightful 🎧💕
