Hotel Pastis
Hotel Pastis: A Novel of Provence | Peter Mayle
3 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
A beguiling novel of romance, adventure, and tongue-in-cheek suspense set in the South of France, from the beloved, best-selling author of A Year in Provence. Simon Shaw, a rumpled, fortyish English advertising executive, has decided to leave it all behind, and heads of to France to transform an abandoned police station in the Lubron into a small but world-class hotel. On his side, Simon has a loyal majordomo and a French business partner who is as practical as she is ravishing. But he hasnt counted on the malignant local journalistor on the mauvaise types who have chosen the neighboring village as the site of their latest bank robbery. Slyly funny and overflowing with sensuous descriptions of the good life, Hotel Pastis is the literacy equivalent of a four-star restaurant.

Was hoping for a delightful read about the French countryside, but I did not enjoy the emphasis on objectifying women, excessive consumption of alcohol and the celebration of men‘s focus on money and what it can buy. One character was a bright light, the charming and creative, Ernest who was the majordoma for Simon, the ad executive. Finally, the bank heist at the end turned out to be a breath of fresh air! #booked2022 #SETINAHOTEL #192025 #1973

Librarybelle I‘ve not read anything by Mayle, though I‘ve seen a movie, I think, based on A Year in Provence. 2y
AnnR Thanks for mentioning there is sexism and other things going on in this book. I think I'll skip this one, even though I liked A Year in Provence. 2y
DivineDiana @Librarybelle I didn‘t know there was a movie! Did you enjoy it? 2y

DivineDiana @Ann_Reads I think I might be overly sensitive. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Librarybelle I honestly cannot remember, it was so long ago! The actor who starred in the Inspector Morse series was the lead in the film. That‘s about as much as I remember! 😂 2y
DivineDiana @Librarybelle I understand perfectly! 🙂 2y

I absolutely love the books by Peter Mayle especially since having spent time in Provence.
