Love and Saffron: A Novel of Friendship, Food, and Love
Love and Saffron: A Novel of Friendship, Food, and Love | Kim Fay
10 posts | 9 read | 11 to read
When twenty-seven-year-old Joan Bergstrom sends a fan letter -- as well as a gift of saffron -- to fifty-nine-year-old Imogen Fortier, a life-changing friendship begins. Joan lives in Los Angeles and is just starting out as a writer for the newspaper food pages. Imogen lives on Camano Island outside Seattle, writing a monthly column for a Pacific Northwest magazine, and while she can hunt elk and dig for clams, she's never tasted fresh garlic -- exotic fare in the Northwest of the sixties. As the two women commune through their letters, they build a closeness that sustains them through the Cuban Missile Crisis, the assassination of President Kennedy, and the unexpected in their own lives.

Such a lovely epistolary novel about food & friendship. Joan Bergstrom, then 27, in LA, in response to a column Mrs. Imogen Fortier, 59,on an island off of Seattle wrote, sends some saffron to her. an exchange of letters begins.Reading these letters is both heartwarming & bittersweet. It‘s wonderful to be part of the growth of their friendship over time. They share their authentic selves, discussing food, life, relationships, love & death.

kspenmoll @Tamra @TheBookHippie thank you. Fall colors are so lovely. Our trees right now are not turning though they‘re brown or yellow and the leaves fall off. 6mo

This quick, one-sitting read was a sweet story of friendship carried out mostly through letters. In the 1960s, Imogen writes a column in Northwest Home & Life magazine. Joan writes Imogen a letter to let her know how much she enjoyed her recent column about digging for clams. Despite their age difference, they strike up a friendship based on their love for food, which turns into a much-needed source of support and encouragement for both of them.

We started a “little” collection of fiesta!! 🍽️🥣🍵

Tamra I love Fiesta and it never wears out or breaks! Perfect for families. 😄🌈 The mugs have been used as kid friendly drinkware and recently we began using Ball quart jars for the same reason. 13mo

I got impatient waiting for my library hold to come in on this one - so decided to use one of my Christmas gift cards. Lazy afternoon off reading and having a late lunch of yummy sushi. 🍣 #lunchbook

I got lucky that my #BookSpin for December was this short epistolary novel. It can be read in one sitting. I think the subtitle captures what it is — two women become friends and bond over food after the younger one writes the other a fan letter. I enjoyed it!

robinb I liked this one too! 😊 1y
