Changing my Doctor Who book from #adaptedforsmallscreen to #hopepunknovel as I was struggling with the prompt and Doctor Who is listed as an example of the genre. Sanditon is replacing it for #adaptedforsmallscreen.

Several young women go missing, but police fail to take action because they were known to be drug users and prostitutes. This is the story of those women, and also how the internet, particularly Craig‘s List, plays a role in sex work. My heart breaks for the families who still do not have justice, as no one has been held accountable in these deaths. This is also a Netflix documentary. #booked2022 #adaptedforsmallscreen

Cinfhen I have this on audio…sounds like a difficult but important listen 2y
DGRachel @Cinfhen It‘s so sad. 😢 2y

This book is transcendent. Absolutely amazing in characters, plotting, and weaving a tapestry of time shifts and story arcs. She blends gentleness with brutality so well. I regret not having read it in 2014 and three times since. OTOH, I really did NOT like what the adaptation did to the story especially The Prophet.

For all my thoughts read the full review https://www.TheBibliophage.com

Cinfhen Ohhhh, is it now available as a miniseries???? So disappointed to hear the adaptation wasn‘t true to the book 😬 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Yes, HBO adapted it. I put a couple of links in my review if you‘re curious! 2y
TheKidUpstairs I loved this book. And everything I've read of hers. I'm always entranced by her voice and perspective. I've got a pre-order in for 2y
Soubhiville I‘m watching the adaptation now (slowly- it‘s a bit triggering!), and then plan a reread. Of course the book is better 😉. 2y
jlhammar I really liked the book, but absolutely loved the HBO adaptation. They made big changes, but they really worked for me. So moving. 2y

This slim novella packs quite a punch! Clare is passing for white while married to a racist husband. She recognizes former classmate Irene, who is able to pass but has married a Black man. Clare regrets her choice and insinuates herself deeper into Irene‘s life. While the subject isn‘t modern, the writing style and suspense is ahead of its time. Excellent!

Another great #NYWD22 choice from @vivastory ! Epic match for sure @monalyisha !

squirrelbrain I loved this book. I recently watched the film (which I never do!); didn‘t love it as much, but still good. 2y
vivastory Boy, Clare's husband 🙄🙄🙄 2y

vivastory I loved this book & still think about it often. I'm glad to hear that it worked so well for you! I'm curious about the movie adaptation. I've heard good things but have been worried how the ending is handled. Will watch with expectations in check. @Megabooks @squirrelbrain 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I keep forgetting I want to watch the adaptation of this stellar book! Thanks for the reminder. 2y
monalyisha Thank you! I know it‘s shallow to point out when there‘s so much meat to your post but…the cover art matches your rug nicely! 2y
Tamra Such a moving book! The film is definitely worth watching. 2y
Cinfhen Cool photo 😍and fabulous review. 2y
Cathythoughts Great review 👍💫 2y
batsy Such an excellent book. And that's a cool edition! 2y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain I‘ve also read the film isn‘t as good. I‘m going to make a post about it though. 2y
Megabooks @vivastory truth re: Clare‘s husband. Do you watch finding your roots on Pbs? I watched one with the director of the movie, and it was fascinating. The movie director was presumably white but had heard there were Black people in her maternal line, and there were. Not only that really remarkable Black folks. Like in circles with Frederick Douglass. It was truly a fascinating episode!! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m not big on movie adaptations, but I‘m interested after watching the above episode. ⬆️ 2y
Megabooks @Tamra it really is! See note about film. ⬆️ It makes me really interested after finding out the director‘s history. 2y
Megabooks @batsy thanks! I found it down a rabbit hole on Amazon. (edited) 2y
Tamra @Megabooks wow, so interesting! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Ooh I will look for that episode also! Thanks 2y

My tentative plan for #Booked2022 #Winter! Tagged another book in consideration for the Set in China prompt.

1. The Witches: Salem, 1692: maybe a stretch, but it does involve a close look at Puritanism.
2. 🎧 📖
3. I have 3 on my TBR for this prompt, also tagged book and a Lisa See novel 🎧 📖
4. Maybe I will finally read this trilogy!
5. From Nigerian publishing house Farafina
6. 🎧 📖

If you want to #buddyread any of these let me know!

Cinfhen I‘m planning on reading BlueBird, Bluebird too! I‘d be up for a #buddyread 🤓 2y
Cinfhen And I totally think The Witches works for #Religion 💯 2y
Cinfhen Siege & Storm would also work for #AdaptedForSmallScreen #SharingIdeas 2y

TrishB My daughter loved the tagged one! 2y
alisiakae @Cinfhen I‘m using the first book in the trilogy for the small screen prompt! Still trying to find a spot for the last book. (edited) 2y
alisiakae @Cinfhen do you think you will read it in January? That will probably be one of the first audiobooks I listen to in the new year. 2y
Kangaj1 Thanks for the Freshwater rec 2y
alisiakae @Kangaj1 the original publisher is the one above. but the US edition I think is under a different publisher. Not sure how strict you are with choosing books for your prompts. 😃 (edited) 2y
alisiakae @TrishB Goos to know! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m intending to read Prodigal Summer for #eco-feminist prompt. Definitely up for a buddy read. 2y
sebrittainclark I really liked Freshwater. Super interesting read. 2y
sprainedbrain Gosh I love Prodigal Summer. 💚 2y

Busy with work this week, so not so much reading time. Having said that, I‘ve also done more driving to meetings so listened to Passing and Church Ladies, both short but very good. I just started the new Moriarty on audio yesterday.

About halfway through Crossroads, which is a chunkster; loving it so far. Took me a while to get into the writing style of Little Reunions but I think I‘ve got it now! (Nearly halfway through)

rockpools A good week, despite the work thing. Happy weekend Helen! 2y
MicheleinPhilly I loved Church Ladies. Am hoping to read Passing this coming week to participate in Netflix‘s book club. 2y
Cinfhen Loved Church Ladies too!!! All your books look wonderful, Helen!! I‘m using the Franzen for #Booked2022 #AboutReligion so I‘ll need to wait a bit longer and I‘m considering reading Passing for #Booked2022 #AdaptedForSmallScreen #SharingIdeas 2y

Cinfhen I didn‘t know Netflix‘s has a bookclub @MicheleinPhilly that‘s awesome 2y
squirrelbrain Passing was great @MicheleinPhilly @cinfhen (haven‘t got round to reviewing it yet). Much tighter than The Vanishing Half, and I gained a far greater understanding of passing. 2y
Megabooks Crossroads was fantastic! Glad you‘re enjoying it. 2y
vivastory Passing is hands down one of my favorites of the year. Such a powerful work 2y
MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen It was just announced recently. It seems like a lot of fun. https://www.netflixbookclub.com 2y
Cinfhen Thanks for sharing the link @MicheleinPhilly 😘😘 2y
BarbaraBB Great report!! 2y
MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen You‘re welcome. This type of thing is right up my alley as I‘m such a stickler about reading before viewing. Plus I just LOVE Uzo. 😘 2y
squirrelbrain Just looked up the Netflix book club @MicheleinPhilly - looks great! I‘ll definitely check it out in a couple of weeks‘ time. 2y
