I just spent a month at Manderley…

This is a reread for me, and while I did not remember every twist and turn, I do remember the creepy vibes from this. It‘s a level of creepiness that slowly enfolds the reader and can make one shiver. That Mrs. Danvers…oh my! I loved it and am glad it was a #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade read! #192025 #1938 #52BookClub24 #AnAbruptEnding

BarkingMadRead It was really creepy, esp Danvers! I don‘t remember that really bad scene from the first time! You‘d think it would stick, but it didn‘t 🤣 5h
TheAromaofBooks Same!! It was a reread for me as well, but I was surprised at some of the scenes/details I'd forgotten. 5h
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I know! Maybe it was Manderley‘s spell…we just could not remember all of the bad. 😂 5h
brittanyreads I really need to get around to this one! 4h

Pointed Roofs | Dorothy Richardson

Mehso-so

This is the first part of Richardson's Pilgrimage series. The writing is beautiful but it takes some effort to appreciate the stream-of-consciousness style and accept the lack of a structured plot.

I used this for prompt 47 of the #52bookclub24, “Self-insert by an author“, as the book supposedly follows the real-life experiences of Richardson.

When I started I was sure this would be a personal #womensprize favorite, but it isn‘t. I have very mixed feelings about it. I love how Alicia Elliott makes me feel (contrary to many others I liked Steve and I think he really loved Alice and she just didn‘t talk! He couldn‘t know half of the things she was thinking of and if they made sense. Does that make me naive or even racist? I certainly hope not but the author is messing with my mind!)⬇️

BarbaraBB But I didn‘t enjoy the second part, the magical realism took over and I lost track and wanted it to be over. 2d
Librarybelle It‘s a shame when books start out strong and then kind of fizzle out in the end. 2d

jlhammar So curious to see what I make of this one. I think I‘m going to go for Dolly and Enter Ghost first since they‘re on the shortlist. 2d
squirrelbrain I loved the first part, but lost interest in the second part (due to the magical realism) so started skim reading and then didn‘t really understand what was going on. 🤷‍♀️ 2d
Leniverse I loved it all the way through. I'm not sure I see it as magical realism though. I liked the ambiguity of "is it all in her head?" 2d
BarbaraBB @Leniverse You are probably right. I really had an increasing“WTF is happening” mindset and wasn‘t sure any longer 2d
BarbaraBB @jlhammar I would indeed! 2d

Not sure why it took me so long to pick up the second book in this series. A great futuristic mystery/thriller. Really enjoying Eve as a main character.

From the first chapter, we know Christian has been jailed for the murder of her uncle John in 1679 Edinburgh. Then we learn about her life and what transpired to arrive here. I loved this! I‘m so glad I ordered this from the UK (it has no US pub date) and that it was on the Women‘s Prize for fiction list so that I read it.

Librarybelle Looking forward to reading this one! 4d

squirrelbrain This was my other option for my last place on the short list. 4d
jlhammar Yay! This is one of the few that I ordered. Really looking forward to it. 4d
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I was really torn about whether to put this one or In Defence on my shortlist. I liked this one better, but ultimately think ID is a more impactful book. 4d

Zorrie | Laird Hunt

This quiet, unassuming novel is beautifully written and tells the story of Zorrie. Zorrie sees tragedy, heartbreak, but also joy and love. Her community is one of acceptance and caring, and Hunt‘s writing makes their quirks come to life. The narrative may be short in length, but the pages pack a punch. #SundayBuddyRead

Some chapters hit closer to home than others and I think that will vary between each reader depending on past experiences in your life.
