I'm making some headway with #Proust2026 and this passage knocked me absolutely flat today. It's tough reading, no doubt, but I'm approaching it like written Pointillism: I'm often in the middle of a bunch of dots, but at certain moments, the whole picture washes over me. I'm doing 10 pages at a time, and some days I sigh in frustration and have to remind myself of the rewards of slow diligence. But today? Today I was moved to tears.

Amiable “Written Pointillism”: That‘s a fabulous description of a reading strategy! 10h

The most comforting sleep for me is when I have showered and ready to leave, school had been suddenly canceled. I put on pajamas, wrap myself with the covers, lay down my head. I may or may not have a book. I'm so comfortable and that is the only time I truly feel pure hygge. In my middle age, I find i sleep better when the sun is up. During the days following Helene, I would just lay on top of the covers, it was hellishly hot,

Butterfinger and wait for the sun to rise because CUSTOM dictates you sleep at night. No movement is allowed. When dawn came, I could finally get up, go to the car to charge my phone, and listen to the news on the radio. We didn't know what was happening except for the few minutes of 99.9, Asheville Country Station. I relate to Proust finding comfort in the familiar. I assigned characteristics to every wood pattern -70s paneling. If something caused a change, 2d
Butterfinger I would fret. I couldn't create stories of the humanistic looking patterns. I knew it was weird. I knew what every creak in my old home meant. I even knew if my father had a bad day by his heavy tread coming up the porch steps. Stay out of the living room. I am very much like his grandmother. I hate symmetry and right angles. My photos on the wall and my scrapbooks bother ocd, but I see the rhyme and reason. Memories of his mother was touching. 2d
Butterfinger Loving mother vs. obedient wife. Ugh. Give him snuggles for heaven's sake. His gift of a magic lamp is stifling his order. His custom. This was quite fun @TheBookHippie @BookishMarginalia #Proust2026 2d

Guys, I am struggling to keep up! I have the worst headache from the Siniusitis I developed from my grandkids being sick over Christmas!! I am so afraid I am going to fall behind... Page 4 of 66 for the week. I must have a large print because my numbers are off from what others have.

Any suggestions?
#proust2026.

Lcsmcat Sometimes it helps if I say it out loud in my head, if that makes sense. It slows my reading down and “hearing” the words helps. 3d
BookishMarginalia It's a year-long ultramarathon, so this is what I recommend: give yourself grace. Lots of grace! Proust benefits from slow unhurried reading, just experiencing the text. Plot is not the point. Being is. 3d

lil1inblue I'm still trying to find my groove, as well. I can't imagine a headache helps with your concentration! Give yourself grace while you're healing, and I'm sure you'll be able pick up the pace when you're well. We'll all help each other along! 3d
Butterfinger @BookishMarginalia I love that advice. I think I will join @TheBookHippie but remind me of grace if I give up. I still have guilt from giving up on Ulysses with @Daisey a few years ago. 2d

I finally made it to Pere Lachaise today, and Proust was my #1 dead person I had to visit. The map I found online turned out to be wildly unspecific (right quadrant, wrong position for EVERYONE), but I ran into a nice lady who offered me help and steered me right to him.

Alas, I never did find Sarah Bernhardt, but I also said hi to Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison. The latter is so rowdy they‘ve got metal event barriers around him.

I‘ve always been intimidated by Proust and was thrilled to read this one with a few others. Proust has a meandering way of exploring the world around him. He‘s not rushed and his sentences are long and indulgent. That can feel exhausting at times, but then you come across a line so beautiful and achingly relatable that it stops you in your tracks. I‘m not ready to tackle the rest of the series, but maybe one book a year would be the right speed.

In February and March, I‘m reading Swann‘s Way with a few bookish friends. I love hearing everyone‘s comments each week. We are reading the Lydia Davis translation and just made it to the halfway point. Proust‘s meandering thoughts are beautiful, but exhausting at times. I love having a chance to savor his words and reflect on them each week instead of rushing through it.

BarbaraBB I took my time too to read these books. It‘s the only way I think. Good luck! (edited) 10mo

Panpan

Nostalgia and run-on sentences.
Recollections of a sad, anxious boy, his memories and accounts of people, often miserable, that he grew up around, scandals that are only scandals due to the attitudes of the time. Very little of the protagonist emerges amongst detailed descriptions of the scenery (nature and architecture), a few books, even place names, aside from his ambition to become a writer and the start of one love affair, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? which is linked into the large digression regarding the character of Swann, not the narrator, but arguably the protagonist for half the book.
Swann in Love is less a description of that 200 pages and more of a warning. All the ways he looked down on and manipulated Odette, then Odette seemingly turns the tables or Swann buys his own con and it devolves into toxic Chasing Amy vibes because of her reputation, only for her to show up later
1y
Robotswithpersonality 3/? married to him.
Proust can turn a phrase, whether it's in service of evocative imagery or a scathing insult from a society dame, but there's something overall that's not just wistful in tone but feels actively self-defeating. Not as clear cut as pessimism or cynicism, maybe just depression manifesting? Maybe this is just what it was to be this type of person in this era. I'm not inspired to pick up the next volume, even considering, or perhaps
1y
Robotswithpersonality because of, the way this one ended.

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude
This was one of my favourite '80s albums (1984), the only LP by Swans Way which spawned one Top 20 single, "Soul Train", so a definitive one-hit wonder, but brilliantly so. Mixing jazz, orchestral and baroque pop, it's Ultra Cool! Reconnecting with it over the past week I think it still really stands up as a great record. Definitely back on my play rotation.
You Tube album link in comments ?

TieDyeDude Argh, I can't find them on US Spotify or YouTube. I could only find a YouTube video for Soul Train. It's a fun song, but there must not be much demand for the rest of their catalog 😬 Thanks for sharing, though! 2y
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude I got the vinyl when it was first released (stored in the loft now) but despite being pretty much Ground Zero for CD release, it's hard to get a reasonably priced copy, so I guess they remain rather obscure. I finally decided to download it! Bummer that it's not available stateside. 2y
The_Book_Ninja Why do I see you in my minds eye dancing to this around the living room in a smoking jacket, a silk cravat, hand embroidered Claridge‘s slippers, socks with suspenders and a gin and tonic slushing around and spilling onto a hand woven, colourful jute rug while Mrs Womble bangs on the wall shouting “Turn that racket down!” ? 2y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Ha, ha! ? Well, the first part is fantasy, but the second part is fairly close. A more accurate approximation of Mrs B's reaction would be, "God, not this shit again!" 2y

This was great the first time around, much better the second.

I love Proust and his cool sentences, as well as his observations. This is the type of thing you have to read slow to absorb it, and understand the full depth of the ideas he‘s conveying. It‘s definitely not something to just run through so as to be able to say you read it.

Basically, the text gives back what you put into it. This is usually the case but even more so for Proust imo.

This is beautiful, evocative writing. I've said it before but it bears repeating - Proust might go on a bit at times( a lot, actually) but there are passages of such beauty, and so vividly described, that it is definitely worth reading

quote
Taylor

I had no greater desire than to see a storm at sea, not so much because it would be a beautiful spectacle as because it would be a moment of nature‘s real life unveiled; or rather for me there were no beautiful spectacles except the ones which I knew were not artificially contrived for my pleasure, but were necessary, unchangeable—the beauties of landscapes or of great art.

Zipporah, Jethro's's daughter -- a small detail from Botticelli's "The Trials of Moses."
I looked up this painting (like many Proust readers before me) because Swann believes Odette resembles this portrait, which helps him fall in love with her.
(It would seem that is not a great reason to fall in love with someone, or might not lead to lasting happiness.)
I'm about halfway through Volume 1. Still enjoying my #morningswithMarcel
