Thank You for Your Service
Thank You for Your Service | David Finkel
15 posts | 12 read | 28 to read
From a MacArthur Fellow and the author of The Good Soldiers, a profound look at life after war The wars of the past decade have been covered by brave and talented reporters, but none has reckoned with the psychology of these wars as intimately as the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Finkel. For The Good Soldiers, his bestselling account from the front lines of Baghdad, Finkel embedded with the men of the 2-16 Infantry Battalion during the infamous "surge," a grueling fifteen-month tour that changed them all forever. In Finkel's hands, readers can feel what these young men were experiencing, and his harrowing story instantly became a classic in the literature of modern war. In Thank You for Your Service, Finkel has done something even more extraordinary. Once again, he has embedded with some of the men of the 2-16but this time he has done it at home, here in the States, after their deployments have ended. He is with them in their most intimate, painful, and hopeful moments as they try to recover, and in doing so, he creates an indelible, essential portrait of what life after war is likenot just for these soldiers, but for their wives, widows, children, and friends, and for the professionals who are truly trying, and to a great degree failing, to undo the damage that has been done. The story Finkel tells is mesmerizing, impossible to put down. With his unparalleled ability to report a story, he climbs into the hearts and minds of those he writes about. Thank You for Your Service is an act of understanding, and it offers a more complete picture than we have ever had of these two essential questions: When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them? And when they return, what are we thanking them for? How often is the fact that #boysdontcry a contributing factor to healing from PTSD? Seeing my husband cry only once in 18 years is a jarring reminder of the emotional crippling many men grew up with and maintain. Thank you for this opportunity to provide a PSA #anglophileapril

Cinfhen Great post!!! Please share your message more often 🥰😘 4y

This book was so difficult to listen to. I want to recommend it to everyone but with warning that it is rough. Thanks to all littens who serve or are a spouse/family member of some one who has...

This is a potent, compelling book chronicling the struggles of (mostly recent) veterans and their families due to time served at war. Sad and profoundly troubling, but important to know this additional very real psychological cost of war. Excellent book.

Today is #NationalBookPublishersDay 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!!! Be sure to thank a book publisher near you for their dedication to giving individuals a voice and bibliophiles the opportunity to read the messages! Books are the best! 😎👌🏻

DrexEdit Publishing is a great business to be in. I see my former employer, Harcourt, up there. Good times. 😊 6y
MrBook @DrexEdit I tried to break into publishing for 10 years with hundreds of applications, and no results 😢😔. And everyone I meet who works in publishing, when I indicate my eagerness to join the biz, they avert their eyes and take a couple steps back while quickly changing the subject. @BookBabe & I have always that very strange. 6y
DrexEdit For what is worth I think you'd do a terrific job in marketing. 😊 based on all your TBR temptation posts. 6y
LauraBeth If that's your and @bookbabe's career dream then I sincerely hope that you both find jobs within publishing 😀 6y

Possibly the greatest thing to happen to me & @BookBabe this year was finding @Litsy ! Thank you to @jeff , @todd , @kdwinchester , & the rest of the amazing team who put this together & keeps it running & improving for all of us Litsyans! You made 2016 worth it all! Can I get a "hear, hear"? Litsy's birth year comes to a close. I know, I know, it's unending ?????, but which is your very favorite aspect of Litsy, everyone?! #MrBookWantsToKnow

Crinoline_Laphroaig Love the So-So and Bail. The stars thing on Goodreads is always a hard call for me. 6y

NovelGirl82 Hear, hear!!! I love that I feel like I have finally found my tribe! Everyone here understands me, and can relate to me, in a way that most others irl can't. I also love that it's such an open environment without all of the judgment and b*tchiness that runs rampant on other social media platforms. I love you guys!! Thanks for welcoming me!! 6y
ReadingRover Me too! I love Litsy!!! 6y
Claireluana Yes! Best part of 2016 was Litsy! 6y
LitsyGoesPostal All the #littens everywhere! 6y
RebeccasReading @NovelGirl82 I second what you said about the lack of b*tchiness... I don't miss it at all and I spend so much less time on other social networking apps. Plus, I can always turn to my litsy friends for awesome book recommendations! 6y
LisaJo @missnavigation I love that you chose something practical about @litsy. And I could not agree with you more. I even have trouble picking a star number on Goodreads on a book I'm trying to review, let alone wade through what other people mean by a four star versus a three star. (edited) 6y
Godmotherx5 @MrBook HEAR, HEAR! My favorite part is the shared love of books without casting judgement. A safe space. 6y
LitLogophile Primarily the opportunity to have people to talk to about books! Doesn't happen enough in my real life unfortunately. And my TBR list shall officially never die 😂 6y
451Degrees My favorite part is I get to nerd out over a book and have ppl totally support it! I do that on Facebook or with friends and people are so unimpressed😒 thank good for bookish #littens 😘😄 6y
MamaGina Here Here❣Supportive, Inclusive & Overflowing with Kindness, that IS Litsy💜 6y
Desha Litsy has been an awesome add to my life this year also! It's a community of #booknerds...I can't get enough of others who believe as I do that it's always #nevertoomanybooksnotenoughbookshelves!!📚🎉❤️😍 6y
BookDragonNotWorm The honest book recommendations, the people, the pet pics, dreaming about joining you and @BookBabe for dinner . . . 🍽️ 6y
Crinoline_Laphroaig So many of my Facebook friends aren't book readers 😟. They just don't have any interest my bookish post. Littens get me. 🤓 and yes @LisaJo I am a practical soul. 6y
LeahBergen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤❤❤❤ 6y
OrangeMooseReads Litsy has been the highlight of a not so great year. I'm so happy to have found this community of book lovers. 6y
todd It's people like you who make it such a great community. Thanks for the support and enthusiasm! Happy New Year. 6y
QuietlyLaura I agree with so many of you! Litsy is such a wonderful place to talk about our shared love of books no matter what genres a person reads. Also all the cat and dog pics, plus the food and book pics! Real people reading and being themselves! 6y
twohectobooks My favourite thing about Litsy is how it's such a warm and casual community of readers. I don't feel like I have to post perfectly composed photos of books to engage with others (looking at you, bookstagram). 6y
Roselyn_Reads Litsy had been awesome. I'm surrounded with people like all of you who are all amazing. I've read books I would have never thought of reading. It's been a place where I can be my book loving self and you all understand such love. Also, I have found myself craving tots at least once a week. Happy New Year. 6y
Nonaroo The people are the best part of Litsy. Everyone is so kind and I just love to see what everyone is reading. It's so nice to have a space to talk about books with people who love them as much as I do! 6y
megt I agree with everything that's been said so far! I love that Litsy goes against the grain of every other social media platform by being supportive and inclusive. Discussions are engaging, encouraging, and most of all, respectful. I never worry about being judged for my opinions here. So glad to have this amazing community! I can't wait to see what 2017 has in store for us! 6y
britt_brooke Litsy is such a positive social media presence. I love it! 6y

andreadmw So happy I found Litsy and bookriot and all you wonderful ppl this year 6y
Lizpixie Hear hear! The community is what's so awesome about Litsy.I was really struggling with depression & illness until I heard about a little app called Litsy on Instagram.Since then I've read more, laughed more, interacted more & generally enjoyed life more, knowing that wherever I am or how I'm feeling, there's always someone to talk to,to sympathize or distract me from pain by recommending books.Without this connection, I honestly don't know where id be 6y
TheBookDream Agreed. This app is awesome. 6y

[DELETED] 3517561138 I love being able to chat about books; like the hopelessly pathetic fan girl that I am, with others who feel the same way! 6y
HardcoverHearts I agree whole heartedly!! 6y

Absolutely heartbreaking. You hear stories all the time about wounded soldiers and PTSD but this put faces to it and makes it so personal. A must read.
