The Kissing Hand is an animal fantasy story by Audrey Penn with illustrations by Ruth E. Harper and Nancy M. Leak. The story is about a little raccoon names Chester that is afraid to go to school because he will miss his mother. Chester‘s mother then gives him a kiss on his hand and tells him that whenever he misses her, he can press that hand to his cheek and it will be like she is there to give him a kiss. This book would do best as a

emilypalkovich storytelling because it is cute and light-hearted. Some activities that go along with this book are linked here: https://www.kindergartenworks.com/kindergarten-teaching-ideas/kissing-hand-freeb.... A UDL principle for this book would be to provide options for language and symbols because the kiss on the hand symbolizes his mother and her love for him. An EL strategy for this book could be number 3: encourage self talk (positive thinking). 2y
emilypalkovich This book could be read on the first day of kindergarten since many students may be nervous and miss their parents. So it is important to encourage self talk and positive thinking. #ucflae3414sp21 2y
DrSpalding Encouraging self talk that is positive is extremely important! We saw a lovely storytelling of this book on Thursday. This belongs in the primary classroom and should be read aloud or even used as a storytelling during the first weeks of school. My own children created their own kissing hands that they kept on their desks at school! 2y

Our little guy starts junior kindergarten today and he is nervous to say the least. At this point I just hope he gets on the bus. We read The Kissing Hand last night - and what a beautiful book. I'm hoping it put him a bit at ease. Chester's mom will always be with him, even when he is at school. Would definitely recommend this book for the night before school.

The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn is a MF book about a loving raccoon mother, and a raccoon son who‘s having trouble leaving his mom to go to school. She kisses his hand, and tells him whenever he gets homesick, just think mommy loves you. Later that night, before school, Chester gives him mom a kiss on the hand and makes sure she knows that he loves her too. #ucflae3414su20

CameoD UDL principle 9.2 aligns very well with this book. It teaches students about how to deal with being homesick, and how to say goodbye, when going to school for the first time. Esol strategy 18 fits very well also, at the end of the book “I love you”, in ASL is drawn, and you could teach the class to say and do the command. https://www.kindergartenworks.com/kindergarten-teaching-ideas/kissing-hand-freeb... is a marvelous site for adorable resources 3y

RamzieM This seems like such a cute book! I like the ESOL and UDL they fit very well and the resource seems amazing! 3y

This very cute and relatable, fictional book by Audrey Penn is a great choice for Kindergarten-2nd graders. Chester the raccoon is nervous about his first day at school and leaving his mom for the first time, but she reminds him that no matter what, she is always with him. She does so by showing him an old family tradition of kissing the palm of your loved ones hand, so when they feel down, they always have a kiss with them. #UCFLAE3414SuB18

This book sends the message "you are loved" for every child and caters to children who are going through a difficult situation. Below is a link to a reading of this precious book. It's also useful for read aloud tips! http://www.storylineonline.net/kissing-hand/ #ucflae3414sp17

DrSpalding So glad you included Storyline Online. This site is produced by the Screen Actors Guild meaning that celebrities read aloud the stories. It is an excellent site to recommend to parents and one to use either with one to one devices or at a technology station in your classroom. 6y

The book, The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn and illustrated by Ruth Harper and Nancy Leak is a traditional literature book that can be used in the classroom for lower elementary students. It could be best used for children who are homesick. #UCFLAE3414SP17 http://themes.atozteacherstuff.com/83/the-kissing-hand-first-day-activities/

AmandaN Very good job. I would love to read this book to my daughter and my future class. Homesickness can be a big problem in the classroom and can cause students to not pay attention very well. So this would be a good beginning of the year read aloud. Thank you for sharing. 6y
DrSpalding True traditional literature is passed down by word of mouth. The Fantasy genre stems from traditional literature and has similar components. This is considered animal fantasy. 6y

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn is about a little racoon who is nervous about his upcoming first day of school. His mother gives him a special gift in order to feel confident and loved throughout the school night. This book is a perfect first day of school read for the classroom! There are several activities available to use in the classroom as well. http://mrsnelsonsclass.com/lesson-units/literature-units/the-kissing-hand-unit/ #UCFLAE3414sp17

EthanH A raccoon attending school?? I am definitely intrigued, so I'm going add this to my list 6y
DrSpalding There are at least two if not three sequels to this wonderful picture book. Check out Audrey Penn's website. 6y

A different kind of kissing ☺
This book was really good for my older son when he was little. New experiences always made him nervous and this made heading to kindergarten easier.

Brenley I read this to kindergarten students as a part of my volunteering. It is soooo cute! 6y
Texreader I read this so many times to my little guy when he was little. Every now and then I remember to kiss his palm. Love this book. 6y

So hard to choose...so many memories: Runaway Bunny was acted out endlessly with my son & me; The Kissing Hand helped Transition to preschool; Madeline books & doll got him through my returning to work; Wemberly Worried addressed all his worries; books that made us laugh; the infamous Thomas & his trains. While doing this I am thinking just how many books helped my son on his life journey.

"A secret? What kind of secret?"
The Kissing Hand is a beautifully written fable by Audrey Penn that would be a great beginning of the school year read aloud. I also found this link on YouTube to a read aloud of this book in Spanish so all children can enjoy its sweet message: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=moHShE4E2_w #UCFLAE3414sp17

Rachelgoff Hi Alana! I read this story as well, and really enjoyed it! It was definitely beautifully written. I agree that this would be a good book to read aloud at the beginning of the school year. I loved that you incorporated a Spanish version of this book! 6y
DrSpalding How wonderful to find the Spanish version. In my copy I brought to class, there is an actual kissing hand from a kindergarten student inside!❤️ 6y

The kissing hand, a Modern Fantasy, is one of those books that will most definitely touch your heart. This book is about a raccoon who doesn't want to leave home, or his mother. To provide comfort, the mom kissed the palm of her sons hand and explained how this will help him when he needs some comfort. This link has several activities that promote social and emotional development http://csefel.vanderbilt.edu/booknook/bn_kissing.pdf #UCFLAE3414sp17

Mlegg I gained some great insight on this book through your post! The first day of school can be a really tough one for young students, and this book along with the great activities you provided could really help make the transition a little easier for the student and the parent. 6y
DrSpalding An excellent book for the first week of school. I will bring my copy to show you what some teachers have done with this sweet book.📚 6y
CharlotteG This is actually one of my favorite books. My mother used to read it to me when I was a little girl before I went into school each day! This is an excellent book and I agree with Dr. Spalding because children can be so frightened before their first day of school and the kissing hand sends such a wonderful message! I loved your post. Thank you for sharing! 6y
BrielleR I love this book. I remember my mom reading this to me as a little girl. Wonderful book. 6y

I remember reading this to my little girl as she went off to nursery school. And bittersweet now because that little girl is moving into her first apartment tomorrow. 😢

ginabeirne Yes, she's going to miss her sister. 6y

Picked up the sweetest story to read to my son before his first day of Kindergarten. If you have young kids going to their first day of school (or anything!), I highly recommend this book.
