There‘s a Frog in my Throat by Loren Leedy and Pat Street is a great book for learning about different poetry techniques such as simile, metaphor, idiom, proverb, etc. Would have great use when creating poetry. #ucflae3414f17

Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain is written by Verna Aardema and pictures are by Beatriz Vidal. This story is a tale based in Kenya in a village that went through a severe drought. It‘s about how it came about and what they did to save it. This story is great for talking about cultures. #ucflae3414f17

Franklin‘s Valentines by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark is a great read for Valentines Day. Franklin was preparing well for Valentine‘s Day but on his way to school the cards must have dropped out because his mother found them in a puddle. Franklin realized that his friends will still like him if he doesn‘t give them a card so he wasn‘t too upset. He decided to make next years Valentine‘s Day super special. #ucflae3414f17

There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Bat by Lucille Colandro Illustrated by Jared Lee is about an old lady who swallowed a bat, no one is sure why she did but she swallowed more things to calm the other. She ended up swallowing a wizard and she yelled “Trick or Treat” and burped and they all came out. This story is cute for around Halloween time. #ucflae3414f17

Pete the Car: The First Thanksgiving by Kimberly and James Dean is about Pete the cat starting in a Thanksgiving play. He is nervous about remembering his lines, which he does. Also, Pete learns about the Pilgrims back then. He realizes that he is so thankful for what they did for all of us. In the end it asks “What are you thankful for?”

cheyennewilliams After doing my author study on Eric Litwin this semester I have fallen in love with all things Pete the Cat! I knew there was a Christmas edition but I wasn‘t aware there was a thanksgiving one too. I‘ll definitely have to add this to my future classroom library. 5y

In this book, the are learning about weather so they took the magic school bus into the eye of a hurricane to learn more about it. After that, they went to the weather station and they leaned more about hurricane and taught what they leaned about hurricanes as well. #ucflae3414f17

cheyennewilliams This is a a heartwarming and hilarious story about finding yourself and staying true to who you are. Great pick to utilize in the classroom! I had the honor of volunteering with Read for the Record this semester and this was the featured book. The kids loved it and there are so many great activities you can use too! 5y

You can download some free activities and it gives a great one for the first day of school having the students talk about names and how many letters are in each name. It helps the students get to know their peers better as well! 5y

Froggy‘s First Kiss by Johnathan London, Illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz is about Froggy who made it seem like he liked Frogalina- turns out that he made a Valentines Day card on it that said “I️ Love You” and it was for his mom. We figured that out in the story after Frogalina got the wrong impression and kissed Froggy at lunch one day. Good read for Valentines Day.

Leak is about a baby raccoon that doesn‘t want to leave his mom to go to school but she kisses his hand and tells him that she will always be with him wherever he goes. This story shows that you have to do things that you don‘t always want to do. Also, it shows that love stays with you.

The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School by Deborah Diesen, pictures by Dan Hanna is about a fish who gets motivation. It‘s all about you CAN do it. The Pout-Pout fish was negative but became more confident. Moral of the story is that you can‘t be great at everything especially if you haven‘t ever tried it before.

Dear Dear by Gene Barrera is a great story of homophones. This story is all about a dear writing to an ant about his ‘neighbors‘ at the zoo. It‘s all about the types of animals and homophones that go with each of them.

Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose, Illustrated by Debbie Tilley is about a boy who wants to squash an ant but doesn‘t know if he should. It‘s all about making your own decisions. A good activity for this would be to ask the students whether or not they would squash the ant or leave them alone. Have them write about it.
