Opal is having a tough time after moving to Florida with her father until he meets a stray dog in the grocery story, who she calls Winn-Dixie and who changes her life. Throughout the story, Opal meets many new faces and learns about their lives and also her own. It is a summer of lessons in friendship and letting go for Opal and Winn-Dixie, and a great story for everyone to read. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This book is great for many different teaching strategies including GR, LC, AS, IR, or RA. I found a great online resource for a guided reading lesson to align with the book. http://www.warsaw.k12.in.us/guided-reading/level-r-1/3173-because-of-winn-dixie-... will help you and the students dive deeply into the text. UDL 6.4 enhance capacity for monitoring progress and ESOL 13 use preview/review activities align nicely with this text and lesson. 6y

The Rabbit Listened | Cori Doerrfeld
post image

Taylor builds something great but after it's destroyed the animals try to help make Taylor feel better by offering to yell or laugh together, but Taylor doesn‘t want to do any of those things. No one makes Taylor feel better until the rabbit comes along. This is a cute story for any student going through something and also helps other us learn that sometimes the best thing to do to make someone feel better is to just be there for them. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This would be a great book to present as a PR. Along with the possibility as a SR, RA, GR, or IR. Because this book is so new, there aren‘t many online resources for lesson plans yet but I found a link for more information about the book and how to purchase it. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/552119/the-rabbit-listened-by-cori-doer... 6y
sboynt This book is so important for teaching compassion and patience; it is a great addition to any classroom library. Remember UDL 3.1 activate or supply background knowledge and ESOL 4 link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge with this text. 6y

This is Not My Hat | Jon Klassen
post image
Pickpick

The little fish knows the hat does not belong to him, but he is taking it anyway. He is going somewhere that no one will find him, so that he can keep the hat. The big fish will not be able to find him. This is such a cute addition to the other story We Found a Hat, I‘ve always loved Jon Klassen‘s illustrations so much and they always drag me back to his books. Read the story to find out if the small fish gets away with his stolen hat. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt Include this book in your classroom library to promote PR. You could also utilize it through SR, GR, IR, or RA. This online resource has great ideas for classroom activities to align with the book, http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/this-is-not-my-hat. Keep in mind UDL 2.4 promote understanding across languages and ESOL 2 promote cooperation (small groups) during this reading and lesson. 6y

This is a rhythmical story that will keep students engaged while also helping them to read with fluency. The cows have a problem with Farmer Brown and life on the farm and they wont give him what he wants until he gives them what they want. Soon, many farm animals go on strike and Farmer Brown doesn‘t have much of a choice. Read the story to find out what decision Farmer Brown makes and what it is the cows want from him. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This is a great story to present as a RT to go with the text. It keeps students engaged, actively participating, and helps with their fluency and expression while reading. Find a RT script here https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Click-Clack-Moo-Cows-that-Type-Reade... for your classroom. Other teaching strategies for this book could include CR, GR, PR, or SR. 6y
sboynt UDL 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information and ESOL 2. Promote cooperation (small groups) are utilized through this lesson. 6y

Pete the Cat's Groovy Guide to Life | James Dean, Kimberly Dean
post image

I‘m obsessed with this book! It‘s not a traditional Pete the Cat story, but instead in this book Pete is paraphrasing famous inspirational life quotes into words and phrases that young students will understand. Children already love Pete, so this brings more realism to the character. This is a great, engaging book to read daily to students and short enough for students to practice reading on their own. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt Many teaching strategies can be implemented through with this book including RA, SR, GR, IR, or CR. There are so many Pete the Cat activities online because so many children love his stories.
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/251286854185240398/?lp=true You could alter many of these activities to align with this text during a RA.
6y
sboynt UDL 3.3 guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation and ESOL
6 continually monitor students‘ comprehension are important for this text.

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image

This is a fictional story inspired by the story of the real life Silverback Gorilla, Ivan, that spent nearly 30 years of his life in a cage at a circus-themed mall off of a highway in Washington state. This story can open up many eyes to the cruelty many animals face everyday. This story is an engaging read and perfect for any student who loves animals. Read the book to find out more about what happens to Ivan and his friends. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This would be a great book to utilize in LC. I absolutely love this book! It is great for a science lesson that you want to squeeze good books into! It contains so much useful information while staying fun and engaging for students. This book takes you throughout our Earth, the even the space surrounding it. Use this book to teach about the world and the people around our students in a cute and creative way! (It's also my favorite that i've posted about so far!!) #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This would be a great story to perform CR with a student or even SR, GR, RA, or IR. I found a great online teacher resource with different activities related to the book at www.harperreach.com/resources/teacher-resources-oliver-jeffers/, which can go along really well with a CR. 6y

The Kissing Hand | Audrey Penn

The kissing hand is a great story for any child‘s first week of kindergarten or even any big event in their life that they‘ve never experienced before or that they‘re afraid of. Chester Raccoon is scared for his first day of school and he would rather stay home with his mother to play with his toys or read his books. She has a solution to make him feel better and to remember that her love is always with him. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This is a great story for many different teaching strategies including S, AS, RA, CR, or SR. This is such a sweet story for young children and they‘ll be wrapped up into it and interested in whichever strategy is used. CPALMS has a great language arts lesson plan to correlate with the book

When the Moon Comes | Paul Harbridge
post image

The kids are waiting for the snow but once it finally falls Arthur makes them wait even longer. They have to wait for the perfect night and for the perfect moment. But why are they waiting? This is a great new winter story, of friends and adventure. This is a great story for RA. While IR, GR, SR, or PR could all also be utilized with this book. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This is a great story to use in the winter time, especially with students in the south who haven‘t experienced snow in the winter. Since this is such a new book, I couldn‘t find any online activities other than some reviews and where to purchase the book. https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/paul-harbridge/when-the-moon-comes/ 6y
sboynt An activity that could be included after a RA would be answering questions about the story through sentences or even pictures. UDL 4.1 along with ESOL 40 could be integrated within this kind of lesson.   6y
SadiqaH This book is similar to SNOW. I agree that these stories are great to read during winter time. 6y
Jeffersleighann I like how you stated that they could answer questions about this story in pictures! It takes a creative stance and I feel students might have more fun. 6y

This story reminds us that life‘s not always about what you are on the outside but who you are inside!  #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This is a great story for SR. While S, RA, CR, and RT could also go along well with the book. Read the story to find out how she tamed the wind while also helping the environment. #UCFLAE3414

sboynt This would work great as a book to use in a storytelling technique. The pages are simple and lyrical, and flow really nicely. Other teaching techniques that could be used with this book are RA, CR, GR, and IR.
